Porsche 1973 911: When Honesty is the Best Policy

Here is a neat 1973 Porsche 911 that has been altered a great deal. As the seller states this is not a car for the purist, it is a driver’s car.

“If you value originality, you probably don’t want this car.
If you are looking for a concourse car to show, you probably don’t want this car.
If you want a powerful sound system with huge subwoofers, this car isn’t for you.
If you want a comfy, quiet ride, and convenient cup holders, this car will disappoint.”

Some further details on the car -

“1973 911 no-sunroof coupe, powered by a 3.2 liter engine.
-Fresh tranny, with 7:31 ring & pinion, Quaife limited slip.
-23mm front, 31mm rear hollow torsion bars.
-SSI heat exchangers, Triad West dual-in dual-out sport muffler
-Body is stock, except for Carrera flares and 935-style mirrors.
-OMP race seats, with 5-point harnesses.
-16 x 7 & 16 x 9 Fuchs wheels
-Also have an “S”-type front bumper, waiting for prep, paint and installation

What it isn’t:

-No Radio
-No Cruise Control
-No power windows or locks

I posted this for the description as much as the car itself. You have to admit the car buying/selling process is pretty ridiculous at times. On one hand you have the seller trying to squeeze out as much as they can from their car, this becomes very tricky if the seller is heavily emotionally and/or fiscally invested in the car. On the other you have the buyer that is always trying to get maximum value for the lowest price. I would have to think an honest description would go a long way towards weeding out those who may not be interested in this sort of car.

The car itself looks well done, for all the honesty in the description the ad could use more pictures to complete the story. If the mechanics checked out and the car is cosmetically up to par I think the asking price is a good start for negotiation.

1992 Porsche 968 With a Story

Normally a car with a story is not a good thing, engine fire, blown this or that, or flood damage are not the kind of stories a prospective buyer wants to hear. Every once in awhile, you hear a story that actually adds to the cache of a car. Take this 1992 968 for example, owner buys car new and drives for 40k careful miles only to park it and abandon it with a ton if Porsche rarities for a little more than a decade.

Some lucky fellow backs into bidding on the treasure including said 968. What the new owner finds is a car that is lightly disassembled but in perfect shape otherwise. I suggest you give it a read, this is the kind of stuff that my Porsche dreams are made of.

Abandoned 1992 Porsche 968 for Sale:

From the seller -

“Once upon a time this car came up for sale in some local publication, I can’t even remember what it was, but it was in storage in a rental unit over in Bainbridge Island, WA. I had taken the ferry over to look at it, and the owner of the storage unit kindly let me peek at it for a few minutes. This was to be a car for my father, and the seller disappeared and we were unable to reach him any longer. But, we kept in contact with the manager/owner of the small storage unit complex, and she said that he owed on the unit, and the whole unit would go up for sale if he didnt pay. Guess what, he didn’t pay.
The weird thing is that I believe he bought the car new, spent a lot in extra parts, and then just went off the radar and left it and all his stuff.

We had the inside info on the unit since I had been there, and when it came time to bid, a heavy hand and wallet acquired everything. Let me tell you, this was a find.
In that storage unit was a rolling tool box with top box, drill press, 911 euro sport seats that looked like NOS parts, 8 and 9″ D90 wheels that looked brand new, and notable money in other Porsche goodies, including a full shop manual set, factory tensioner gauge, etc.

The car however was the real gem. Not only was this car clearly never in any accident, it had 42k miles, M030 suspension parts, adjustable Koni’s, nearly every original piece to the car, and it was a black on black 6 speed with NO SUNROOF and sport SCRIPT interior, all perfect.
Once under the car, I could see all the cosmolene still on it.

The catch was that it had been sitting for 12 years, but it looked like it was sitting for 12 weeks! The front of the engine was partially disassembled, bolts were in bags, and you couldn’t really tell why or what had prompted the owner to tear it apart and put it in storage.

So, after getting it back to the garage, I began working on it. 3 days later, I was driving it.

It now has a mere 44k miles on it, and it is the cleanest, nicest 968 I’ve seen, and let me tell you, its a good one.
It has 2k miles on the timing belt bits, all new fluids (good fluids), brakes, battery, windshield (it had a ding), fresh AC charge with R12 (and yes it works), new alternator, etc.

The car handles very well, transmission is smooth, engine runs perfect, and the only thing that doesn’t work is the original radio doesn’t turn on any longer. Darn. “

Neat neat car, the Porsche script seats, suspension, and non-sunroof option are all very rare in an of themselves. Add them up and they are unheard of. The original condition and unmolested nature of this 968 are also something to behold. Is this a $25k car? I think not, this would be a great buy at $6k to $7k less but if the seller is patient they may find someone willing to pay the premium for this beautiful 968.

1968 Euro 911S Softwindow Targa For Sale

While scanning Samba this week I stumbled across this super rare imported 911s softie for sale.

Imported 911s Softwindow Targa:

From the seller -

“Very rare 68 S Targa Softie. Those cars rarely come to market and are particularly rare in the US as they were never offered here officially.
This car made its way over from Germany in 1972 and stayed with one family in Kansas for 30 years, before it was purchased by the current owner. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot of documentation accompanying the vehicle, except for a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, which confirms this to be a fully numbers matching car.

The current owner had the car restored about 18 months ago. The body was taken down to bare metal, repaired and painted in its correct polo red. The top and interior was completely redone and all trim and chrome pieces were restored or replaced.

The engine was rebuilt under the first US ownership but we’re missing the paperwork on the work. The engine would probably benefit from a re-seal due to its long non-operational status. It runs great and pulls strong all the way to redline.

The car is missing its original heat exchangers and runs headers currently.

This is a very rare opportunity to purchase a true blue chip collectable Soft Window S Targa, all numbers matching in a wonderful color combination.

You can’t deny the rare nature of this 911 and it looks like the recent cosmetic restoration was carried out with a very high level of detail. At $89k you could argue that this car is priced with the highest quality domestic S cars of the same vintage.

However, if I am spending almost $90k on a car it better come with a full set of records. In fact I am a bit shocked how little is known about this and the 30 years it spent in Kansas. If the rarity of this car is worth a little mystery to you then have at it. For my money I would hold out for a pristine domestic S sans soft rear window with a detailed record of ownership and maintenance.

1966 Porsche 912

The 912 is one of those Porsches oft forgotten. Introduced in 1965 as an entry level alternative to the more powerful 911, the four cylinder 912 had a production run that spanned five years until the introduction of the 914, the mid-engined Porsche/VW collaboration. The 912 returned briefly to the US market in 1976 as the 912E, only being sold in the United States. This particular example has been well documented and preserved, still retaining the sought after California black plates.

The seller states:

This two owner car has been in sunny Southern California all its life and was in private collection for the last 15 years. Car still retains its original black and yellow California plates. Beautiful color combination that you do not see often. According to service records [can track mileage back from work performed from 99K to present] and previous owner this car has 128K miles. This is a rare 3 gauge with four speed transmission.

Has the proper horn button and steering wheel. Putting leather wrap on the wheel but could use refinishing. All numbers match. Engine #745905. Paint code is 6604. And VIN is 455742. Comes with factory 912 owners manual [not a reproduction]. The pans are all factory original and have no rust. Has 5 steel wheels which I believe have always been on this car. Factory Euro air cleaners with Solex carbs. Trunk has factory installed carpet which has never been changed and is still in good shape considering its age.

This car has a very high quality paint. All windows rubbers, bumpers, door handles, etc. were removed and car was taken down to metal for repaint. Here is a partial list of maintenance and repairs done in the last 18k miles. All work documented with receipts from very reputable shop.

Solex carbs rebuilt
Brakes and calipers
Engine rebuilt
Shocks and struts [Bilstein]
New clutch
Transmission rebuilt
Dash redone to factory specs with speaker holes
Seat reupholstered. Interior was always red [not a color change]
Carpet

There are other smaller items. Just listed major repairs.

The 912 models obviously sell for less than their contemporary 911 siblings, but these smaller engined variants can regularly money similar to the later 911SC models. NADA is listing high retail at just shy of $20,000. With the history and documentation on this car, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it go in the mid $20k range.

How can you tell if someone is car guy/gal? If you can have entire conversation about cars the the subject of color does not come up. How often have you heard this:

Me: Hey I got a new car, it is part spaceship and runs on the hopes and dreams of children.

Non car guy/gal: Really! What color is it?

What does it matter? As long as it is not some putrid shade of meh with blah interior it should be just fine. Well, unless…

“This 1993 Porsche 968 Cabriolet is finished in the rare Raspberry Metallic exterior paint scheme with linen colored leather interior. It is from sunny Naples, Florida where it lived a pampered life of luxury. It is equipped with the 17″ color keyed Porsche Cup alloy wheels and has the hard to find tiptronic automatic transmission, Porsche AM/FM in-dash cd player, full power driver’s seat with partial power passenger’s seat. The timing belt service was just completed at 41,000 miles. This is a beautiful color combination and a great driving Porsche convertible.”

I remember the 90′s with a great deal of fondness, I can even see how this color would have worked back in the day. To me, it looks less like Raspberry and more like lipstick that was so popular at the time. You know, the kind that could double as a road flare. Color is a highly subjective thing and it may look better in person. The only other Porsche I have seen in this hue was a 911 RS America, it did not work in that case either.

All that being said, the 968 is a wonderful car. This one looks to have lived a pampered life with regular maintenance. I am going to go out on a short limb and say this has probably been driven by the fairer gender so it should be ready to go for the new owner. A buy-it-now of $16.9k seems a little high but one could expect that from a dealer. I am sure they have plenty of wiggle room as this color combo is not for the faint of heart.

The right car, with the right miles, in the right color. A meticulous owner who has taken the time to care for the car as it should. It lives on a garage floor that I could get all David Hasselhoff on. At almost $37k it is at the highest end of the price range but this car looks to be nicer than the gross majority you would find.

Superbly restored 1965 Porsche 911

This well cared for, 74,000 mile, Porsche received engine and transmission overhaul work back in 1982 and more recently had a full cosmetic restoration. It really looks nice in black with white racing stripes. The owner says that the car has a custom exhaust and new radio amongst some upgrades. The bare metal respray cost $12,000 and there is $50,000 in total receipts. The car sits on 14″ Fuchs.
This is a real nice looker and from the description it sounds like the drive is great as well. It is currently bid up to $22,500, reserve not met, with several days left. The seller offers plenty of opportunity to visit the car in person and seems perfectly legit, but does have low eBay feedback numbers.

This is a bit of an oddity. Someone spent a lot of time putting together a race/street 911 widebody, but either ran out of money or got bored before finding it an engine and transmission. Not much more to say, I don’t like seller’s who write their ads in all caps and underlined so I didn’t read much of the description. If you can make it through the visually stupefying description let us know what you think of this. I see it is quite the widebody and comes with 5 points and a roll cage. The opening ask price is $9500, no reserve, buy-it-now is at $25,000 (now way it will sell for that). If you want a project and like bright Dodge Challenger “sublime green” paint take a look at this.

Dream Car: 1997 PORSCHE 993 TURBO X50 For Sale

If money, resources, and common sense did not matter what kind of car would you buy? For me it is the Porsche 993, the last of the air cooled 911′s. The ultimate 993 is the 1997 Turbo which was roughly $120k and change when new and has done an amazing job of holding its value over the years. The car below is an as close to new as you will find, covering only 8k miles over the last 13 years.

Low mile 1997 Porsche 993 Turbo for Sale:

“Arctic silver/Boxster red, 8,300 miles, factory X50/450 HP engine kit, sport seats w/ silver seat backs, factory Turbo S front spoiler and fog light/brake ducts, special full leather interior with complete carbon fiber package and 3-spoke steering wheel, CD changer, seat crests, factory infra-red alarm, sunroof delete, rear seat delete, rear wiper delete, Bilstein PSS-9 suspension with new BBS LM wheels and tires, fresh service with updates, certificate of authenticity, as new condition, finest available, $114,500″

The X50 option was originally 17k from the factory and boosted horsepower to a neck snapping 450. A closer look at the interior reveals a collection of the best bits from the 1997 Tequipment catalog. This includes rare red leather interior, carbon fiber accents, and lightweight and hard back sport seats. These are things that are simply not available now.

The addition of the “S” spoiler and the new set of BBS LM wheels and tires round out the look. While $114k is a hefty price to pay, you are getting the ultimate water cooled Porsche in museum quality condition. I am not sure I would be comfortable backing this one out of the garage, that is why it is my dream car.

I am getting close to 90 posts on GCFSB and the car I have blogged the most about is the Porsche 944 Turbo. I have always loved the looks, the performance, and the sound it makes when you get on the turbo. The best part about the 951 is that there are a ton of them that are available. For the discerning car buyer, at any given time, there are 3-5 well cared for examples that would look good in any garage. Case in point:

-TUNE FROM SPECIAL TOOL ON DYNO / have sheets and will attach pictures

-whole interior replaced with light tan and black.
-porsche script sport seats in perfect condition (have never seen this color sport seat)
-new loyd “turbo” mats
-aluminum pedal seat
-four new alpine speakers
-alpine head unit w/ ipod hookup and Bluetooth

Wheels:
-Fikse wheels
-S-03s on the front with 80% life left
-Michelin Pilot sports on rear with 70% life left
-just polished all the lips and they look brand new

Phew, that is a ton of maintenance and care put into a car. Over time I have learned that I would rather have a car that has been driven and maintained than a garage queen that as been sitting over the years. While this car is north of 100k in terms of mileage it also has had all of the maintenance to guarantee another 100k for a lucky new owner.

This 951 has also been upgraded with mild engine enhancements, exhaust, suspension, a completely swapped interior, and a set of Fiske wheels. 13K with the wheels seems a bit on the high side, but consider the cost of all those enhancements and it seems like a much better deal. Sure, you could knock $2k w/o the Fiske’s but why on earth would you do that?
