1993 Volkswagen Corrado SLC with 55,000 original miles

The late ’80s and early ’90s produced some of the greatest hot hatchbacks of our time. Cars like the Honda CR-X, Acura Integra and Mazda MX-3 are lameted these days, due to the increase in size and weight of all vehicle segments. Taking the place of the Scirocco, the Volkswagen Corrado was a welcomed German addition to this once sizable segment. Unfortunately, many of these great machines have been torn up and modified over the years, or just plain neglected. Here we have a nice example of the later VR6 engined Corrado.

The seller states:

1993 VW Corrado SLC VR6, 5 speed, silver w black leather, only 55,979 original miles! Bilstein struts, new pads and drilled rotors, cold air intake, Neuspeed exhaust… otherwise, stock from the factory! Slight clear coat peeling on right side in a couple smaller areas.

As of writing this, there are no takers at the $7,500 starting bid. Others in similar condition that I’ve seen in the past year have been going in the $5,000 to $6,000 range, so this asking bid may be a bit optimistic in enthusiasts eyes. The only thing that would detract a buyer in my mind would be the non-standard exhaust pipe (looks a bit ridiculous sticking out that far) and the added audio equipment. Other than that, this is a chance to own an unmolested example of Wolfsburg’s (well, Karmann’s) finest.

1991 GTI VR6 Swap For Sale

The MkII GTI has always been in an odd no-man’s land for me. I respect the styling and the large tuning community of it, but any time I consider one myself, I wonder why I wouldn’t just get a MkI. When I see an example like this, however, I start to covet them a little more. They may not be as pure and old-school as the original, but they’ve got some serious style, a bit more “grown-up” cred, and can obviously more readily accept modern parts. Case in point, this fast 1991 with a healthy dose of modification that stops short of going overboard.

Despite a misunderstanding of quotation marks’ function, the seller provides a good rundown:

HI I have a 1991 gti white with about 70K on the engine. This car is faster then my 2004 vw r32. I have about $6500+ into this car not including labor or the car itself. Most if not all the parts on this car have under 500 miles on it including wheels and tires. This car can be a show car the way it sits.

ENGINE “less then 500 miles on engine parts”

The engine has 268 cams, lifters and springs to go with the cams. The intake manifold is shaved and painted black and the spark plug wires run under it ” for a cleaner look”.

The powder-coated BBS RMs look about as perfect as you could get. I love older German cars in white, and the VR6 must make this the right kind of handful. $8500 is a bit steep for a MkII Volkswagen, but this appears to be a well put-together total package. Sure, there’ll probably be several similar GTIs if you go to a local VW show, but maybe that’s just a testament to how well this package works.

This Rabbitamino is just about exactly what I would have liked to have done with my first car, a white 1981 VW Rabbit Truck. The light pickup body and communicative steering made me first enjoy “driving slow cars fast,” as I once heard it aptly put. And slow they usually are, fitted with anemic but efficient gas and diesel engines. This seller solved that with plenty of go-quick bits from GTIs and Sciroccos that conveniently follow the VW tradition of LEGO-like parts interchangeability.

A detailed but concise description from the seller:

Up for sale is my 1982 VW Rabbit Sport Truck. This is a super rare truck that is in awesome shape. The original 1.7 motor has been replaced with a single ohc 1.8 gti motor with a g-grind cam. Also has the gti trans, scirocco brakes with stainless steel brake lines, corrado recaro seats. The interior of the truck is in really nice shape with the exception of the headliner which I removed because it was falling down. The paint, as typical with this gen vw, is fading but there is hardly any body rust, no bed rust, no strut tower rust. Almost new winter tires on 15″ wheels to fit the scirocco brakes. I just had brand new 2 inch exhaust installed from the header pipe back. I have a matching tailgate but the handles does not work, I also have a bumper with hitch ball mounts. I love this truck I just need something with more seats so the kids can cruise with me.

Despite Wisconsin roots, notorious for devouring all things metal, this GTIchero has minimal rust and none in the most common problem areas. The pictures show a pretty beat tailgate because the original has a broken latch, but that’s an easy fix. For $3600 this would a fun, efficient, and useful little truck. I love the style, the big steelies, the great interior, the OEM+ upgrades. Well done to the seller, and cheers to whoever buys and appreciates this funky take on the GTI.

How about, stumbled across this under a tarp in my neighbor’s driveway…

A 1978 VW Scirocco has been posted to that auction site that has been sitting for several years. It looks as though it has 18k miles which can be verified. Sure the front bumper has fallen off and it has some surface rust but this could be a diamond in the rough.

From the seller -

“Offered for sale is this beautiful ’78 Scirocco. It was barely driven for two years when purchased new in ’77, and then stored for 25 years. This car was reworked when removed from storage, but has fallen behind as we no longer drive it. Odometer no longer works, but car had 15,092 in 2000 when odometer still worked. We estimate the car may an additional 1,000 since it stopped functioning. Included is the original owners manual & Chilton’s repair guide. Vehicle has original paint with minor rust that is typical of model. Interior is in excellent condition and has a rock star feel with black and chrome detailing and hip 8-track player. This model was equipped with factory-installed A/C. I’ve had this car at over 70mph and it was fast and smooth. All lights work.

The car turned over fine the last time we tried, but battery has since died. It’s just been sitting COVERED in our driveway for 4 years, and seems to just need someone who knows what they’re doing. Tires are flat from sitting too long, so it would need to be towed. Front bumper has fallen off, but part is fine.”

As of this writing bidding sits at $1.2k with no reserve, this car will sell. If the rust is of the surface variety this is an excellent opportunity to get into a ultra low mile MKI Scirocco at a good price. Some new tires, brakes, a tune-up, interior detail, and minor paint work and this could be a very nice driver for someone. Happy bidding!

The VW Scirocco never quite took off as much as the GTI did on US shores, but here’s a clean ’86 example that seems as if it was well loved. This 16V version represents the end of the line for the VW sports hatch, as 1988 was the last year it was offered stateside.

The seller states:

Up for auction is a 1986 (1987 Production year) VW Scirocco with 46000 original miles. The car is very clean there is not a spot of rust anywhere on the body of the car. The interior is in excellent condition there is no tears or cracks in any of the seats. The tires, timing belt, plugs, cap and rotor,battery,and coolant are new. I bought the car from the original ower who bought it new. He had a issue with the engine at 45000 miles and the car was parked for a long time. At some point in time he let his kid armed with a shop manual try to fix it… When I bought the car the head was pulled off. The owner told me he thought there was something wrong with the head?? I didn’t want to deal with it so I bought a used motor with 68000 miles on it. Which is in the car now. The engine starts, idles, and runs like new. The original motor with 45000 miles on it is included in the auction. It’s the perfect scenario.. Build the engine of your dreams with the original motor and drive the car in the meantime! I installed a stereo system with a high end alpine head unit, alpine speakers and a boston acoustic sub. It sounds amazing! The only issues that I know of are The passenger power window, AC, and aftermarket cruise control don’t work. I’ve only put about 1000 miles on the car since I put the motor in. The car is quick and a blast to drive. It also gets great gas mileage. I love the car, but I’m buying a porsche 928 and I only have room in the garage for one toy so the rocco must go.
-Also in the pics the dark areas on the front seats are not stains its just the grain of the fabric.
-Car has never seen snow.. I won’t even drive it in the rain..
-Extra fuel lines, injectors, alternator, starter, and AC compressor come with original motor.

With no reserve on the auction, it should be interesting to see what a low mileage 16V is worth these days. Even with an engine replacement, this seems like a pretty honest and original example.

Clean 1984 VW GTI on Samba

If you have noticed my last few posts have come from Samba. Samba is typically a good site for finding rare German autos. Typically you have to sort through several rust buckets before you find something interesting but lately the site is on fire. Case in point, this very clean MKI GTI.

“Very clean and unmolested GTI for sale. 112,311 original miles. Original west coast car with no rust at all. Original paint in good shape. Left fender was repainted long ago. Interior in great shape. Headliner replaced. Nice stereo. H/R coilover suspension. Cross drilled rotors. Lower front stress bar. 15×8 Snowflakes with 195/45-15 Toyo’s. New waterpump and thermostat, timing belt and tensioner, lower timing belt cover, new oil pan. Has factory windage tray and oil cooler. G-grind camshaft. Neuspeed throttle body with correct adapter plate. Nice tig welded stainless cat back exhaust with a Borla muffler that sounds great. Everything works with no issues. Great heat. Runs and drives great. Current Pa. inspection.”

Just a great looking car in wonderful condition. I can count the times I have seen a MKI without a rip in the driver’s seat and a taut headliner on one hand so I commend the owner on how they have cared for the car. This GTI also comes with some neat bits including cross drilled rotors, a hot cam, and a Neuspeed throttle body.

My favorite upgrade is the 15×8 snowflakes, at first glance I thought they were widened stock flakes with a larger lip. Turns out an outfit by the name of RML is making these reps which really complete the look of the car. You can find more info on these wheels here.

All of this at a $6k asking seems like a fair deal, having restored a MKI GTI I am certain the owner has far more cash into this car. But these cars are not investments, they are a labor of lub, and I lub this GTI.

I have not seen a Sport Edition truck since the 80′s, that and the stock nature of this car makes it pretty darn rare. Props to the owner for restoring this truck to stock versus the easier route of altering the truck beyond recognition. The tweak of adding the GTI motor is a welcome change as the stock truck setup is sluggish at best.

If you are looking for a VW truck and want something that looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor this may be the truck for you. If you would rather wait for the new VW compact mentioned above truck to hit our shores you are going to need to find another 99,999 friends to join you.

Found: 1977 MKI Volkswagen Polo

Here is a rarity, a right hand drive 1977 VW Polo that has been hiding stateside for some time. While not perfect, it is a rare opportunity to own a car that has been wildly popular in Europe for years.

The MKI Polo was essentially a re-badged Audi 50 with fewer bells and whistles. Smaller in size than the Golf, the Polo was perfect for the European lifestyle. Stingy on gas and small enough to be parked just about anywhere.

“I’ve had this car parked for the last few years, but it still fires up the first time, every time.
One thing in particular that makes this car stand out is that it has the original early small metal bumpers which are quite rare. I also have a spare late style plastic bumper set along with the matching grill.

The exterior was resprayed about 4-5 years ago in its original Miami Blue, however the car sat to long in its primered state and has developed paint bubbles.

The interior of this car is its worst quality as I believe the car sat in a glass front garage for many years, which would explain the lack of rust on the car but the overall condition of the bench and front buckets.

The dash and steering wheel are in great shape along with the door panels.
The only aftermarket modification to this car is the sliding rag top, which I don’t really understand myself. I’ll most likely replace the sliding unit with a vinyl snap in place top.

I’m open for trades of all sort on this car, but cash works as well. Ideally if I include all the spare parts I have for this car I would like $5000.00, so a trade in that ballpark would work to.

It sounds as though the seller is both flexible on price or trade. So if you have an extra Landcruiser, a goat, or some machinery laying around you may want to give him a holler. It is a shame this little Polo has been neglected but with some attention to the rust areas, a re-working of that sliding top, and a little interior work you would have a unique little commuter. If you wanted to go a little crazy a TDI transplant would be a hoot!

When Volkswagen introduced the B5 chassis Passat in 1998, they started a revolution. Gone was the quirky, unloved Passat of yore that was maligned for its unreliability and in came a fresh looking mid-sized sedan sporting Audi A4 architecture underneath. In 2002, VW upped the ante and offered a 4.0 liter eight cylinder engine that was a forerunner to the upcoming W12 used in the VW Phaeton, Audi A8 and the astounding W16 engine in the Bugatti Veyron. Clean 1988 VW Scirocco for Sale

For those of you that watch Top Gear you know that the new VW Scirocco was their car of the year in 2008. In the two years since launch there are now 14 variations including a diesel version of this beautiful coupe. Initially there were plans to introduce the Rocco stateside but those have since been scuttled for the fear of cannibalizing already soft GTI sales. To get a look at what we are missing click here.

What this car is, is an excellent example of a car that has been well cared for and can be enjoyed for years to come in it’s current state. $4k is a fair price to pay for that kind of security. Sure, this car is not loaded with obscure VW bits from around the world, but it is a great place to start if that was the end goal.

If you have been looking for a nice used Scirocco, this represents a rare opportunity to obtain one at a reasonable price.
