Cutsie 1958 Isetta 300 Convertible For Sale

August 29, 2010 by Aaron

“As I drove down the coast in my rolling egg, the wind blowing through my hair.  I dreamed of days gone by, times when I actually could drive a car with more than 50hp.  It was at that moment I veered to the left and plunged my ping pong ball with wheels into the ocean.”

I guess the Isetta is not for me.  It’s small, seemingly made of tin, and cute on a level that I would never feel comfortable getting behind the wheel.  However, during my late night habit of watching Barrett Jackson Auctions I am shocked by the dollars these cars can fetch.

What we have here is a 1958 Isetta with a soft top.  Every other egg I have seen is of the coupe variety so that alone gives this car some appeal.  For the right person, which clearly I am not, this would make a neat little grocery getter.

From the seller -

“Here we have a very Rare 1958 BMW Isetta 300 Convertible, this nice car was restored in the late 1980s. These convertible Isetta’s were rare even when they were new. While all Isettas have a fabric sunroof to complement the single front opening door, the addition of the folding fabric rear canopy, incorporating the glass window, makes this model a convertible.

This particular rolling egg runs and drives like new and is presented in white with a beige basket weave leatherette interior, period accessories and the 0riginal running in instructions on a sticker in the front window. After one drive you will understand the cheeky attitude that makes Isettas as popular today as they were in the 50s and 60s, this is a very nice driver and in very good condition.”

At nearly $40k, you can’t say this is a lot of car for the money, there is just not that much car.  You could by two new Smart cars for that price.  But, what you would be missing is the cache that the Isetta provides.  The question then becomes, what is that worth?
