Double Take: Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

It is always interesting to take a look at the first version of a particular 911 model, whether to understand how a particular variant took shape or, for those on the investment side, to consider which might be the next model to take off on the market. Here we have the 993 Carrera 4S, the first version of the model produced for the 911 line and the only model produced with an air-cooled engine. It would be difficult for these models to show significant appreciation in the short term for the simple fact that they are already fairly expensive. Long term, however, this is the sort of variant that we could see do very well for buyers that are patient. There are a lot of similarities between the two cars featured here and both share one trait that I particularly like: each is fairly low mileage, but neither is ridiculously so. Meaning, each could still be driven and enjoyed to a reasonable degree each year without concern for killing the premium that comes with any low-mileage vehicle. We will start with a C4S from the first year of their production: a 1996 Speed Yellow C4S, located in Connecticut, with 33,800 miles on it.

For those who want to stand apart from the crowd it is tough to do better than a Speed Yellow 993. There is just so much vibrancy to this car and unlike the classic 911 it still looks very modern (at least on the outside). One of the styling characteristics of the 993 that I have never enjoyed is the whale tail. I LOVE the whale tail on the classic 911, but the shape used on the 993 never appealed to me. So on this car here, with the wider rear of the Turbo but without the tail, I am hooked. The shape looks just fantastic. In every regard this car looks as we would expect of a 33K mile 993 so if it comes through as mechanically sound as it should be, then it looks like an excellent choice.

We’ll now turn to the slightly less original of the two cars featured here: a 1997 Snow White C4S with red accents, located in Brooklyn, and 30,312 miles on it.

I can’t say I’m a fan of the decals on this one, but thankfully it sounds as if they can be easily removed. Otherwise, I don’t mind the rest of the modifications made here because while they aren’t exactly subtle they still preserve the overall lines and look of the car, while offering a more aggressive and slightly different appearance. Like our Speed Yellow example everything looks as we’d expect. In sum, two different cars with very similar mileage and a very similar price, though with some fairly obvious differences in their appearance. At first glance, both seem priced a bit too high as it wasn’t that long ago that a C4S was priced about $20K less than these here so I would hope there’s some negotiating room. My preference would be for the Speed Yellow car, but for those who want something quite a bit more subtle, the Snow White C4S (with decals removed) might fit the bill.

I have seen the yellow one in person, my friend is the owner. Spectacular example, aside from the color….

The speed yellow car looks like a nice one- low mileage, nicely presented. The only thing that stands out to me is that the options list they mention has comfort seats listed, while the seats in the car are clearly the sport seats.

The white car is non-original and some of the modifications scream accident to me- why were the fenders replaced? If they were not, that means someone cut holes in the fenders to install the side marker lights. Also, if the mirrors and front air dam are painted and not wrapped, it’s going to cost some money to remove those red accents. Same goes for the color on the wing. There’s no way that the white car can justify a $90k+ price tag.
