Legendary BMW M1 on Ebay

January 22, 2010 by Ben

Ben had this post all ready to go for this M1 that showed up on eBay, but before we could get it posted the car disappeared off of eBay. The auction had been pulled. We’re not sure what happened, but in case it was something sketchy, I suspect it was, be careful if you see this car listed again. ~Evan

I wanted to get this up ASAP.  1980 (e26) BMW M1 in New Jersey.  If you’re a big BMW fan, which I’m sure most of you are, this is one of the Holy Grails.  The original BMW supercar. Built in conjunction with Lamborghini and styled by Guigiaro, BMW wanted to enter Group 4 and Group 5 Homologation racing. The unofficial BMW M1 site says that the M1 never raced in Group 4 or 5 but actually ended up competing in the Procar series instead, where “In 1981, David Cowart and Kenper Miller won the IMSA GTO category.” Only 455 total M1s were built, 399 being road examples.

The M1 has a mid-engine layout where a 273hp twin-cam 3.5 L 6-cylinder lives.  This engine was later modified and used in the E24 M6/M635CSi and the E28 M5.

The seller says the vehicle condition is excellent: no rusts spots, paint blemishes or body damage. 46,000 miles means this M1 isn’t a trailer queen but also hasn’t been thrashed. There’s only one picture up which is really too bad.

This is one of my all time favorite BMWs.  I’m really interested to see what the ending bid is on this piece of classic German muscle.

Ya, this was pretty shady now that I think about it. Only one picture, bare bones info on the car, seller only had eBay 3 sales to his name…

I was hung up on the fact that I’ve never seen an M1 on eBay and that the auction ended in 17 hours.

If you see anything please keep us updated.

That is definately a scam. That photo is taken in front of Grand Prix Motors in Wilsonville, OR NOT New Jersey. This is so typical scammers just copy photos from another site and try to pass them off as their own. I have even seen pictures of my cars featured on others peoples sites and listings. Be careful!

Was it offered at a silly price or something?

Nope, it was No Reserve. Had about 25 bids before it was taken down. I think the price was up to $34K

I asked the seller a question, but never got a response. Pretty sketchy indeed.
