Low Mile 1987 Porsche 944S For Sale

May 3, 2010 by Aaron

Found a very low mile 1987 Porsche 944S on that auction site.  The “S”, introduced in 1987,  is a bit different from the stock 944 due to its 16 valve 2.5 liter engine.  This is the first time the 944 had a engine with four valves per cylinder.  While this power plant provided a little more zip it really did not translate into higher sales.  ”S” cars do not have the same cache or audience as the 951 or Turbo “S” cars.

Either way, a low mile 944 is a wonder to behold regardless of the model.  This particular car is finished in a rareish blue color (Adventurine?) and seems to be in great shape with the exception of a small tear in the seat.  At 48K this car has a ton of smiles left in it.

From the seller’s ad -

“Here is a very clean, unmolested and low mileage Porsche 944S. This was never a track car and the owner was not a smoker. The vehicle was maintained by a local Porsche Dealership and is mechanically wonderful. We have a maintenance summary including a timing belt change at 45,000 miles as well as the portfolio of books. It is equally nice physically. Just take a look at the custom cargo area cover for example. It was made to protect the carpet from fading and represents how the car has been looked after. There are no unusual marks or blemishes. The insulation under the hood has started to flake and the clear coat is beginning to age but this Porsche certainly shows well! There is also a small 1-inch tear on the passenger seat cushion. It runs strong, the clutch is fine and the a/c works! In fact all the features work with the exception of the sunroof. It will open but not close (switch?). This is a turnkey car ready to be driven anywhere. There are no issues or funny stories. It is simply a properly looked after low mileage example of a classic performance machine! We welcome your questions and purchase inquiries.”

This one almost hits the trifecta of a good German used car find.  Rare car… check, low miles and excellent shape… check, reasonable price… almost $15k, heck no!  Either this dealer does not know the marquee, which is almost understandable.  Or, they are actively looking to rip someone off which is likely closer to the truth.  I know, these asking prices are merely a guide for negotiations.  The problem is this starting point is likely twice what the car is worth.  I hope that the dealer gets serious about selling this car so a lucky owner can enjoy it, at a reasonable price of course.
