Mint 1994 Porsche 964 Cab With 9k Miles
May 27, 2010 by Aaron
One thing this whole economic downturn has done is flush a ton of fantastic low mileage cars onto the market. This ultra low mileage 964 is an excellent example. Flawless paint and supple interior round out the look of a car that has lived a privileged life. The 1994 is my favorite 964 as Porsche worked out many of the leaks and bugs that plagued some of the earlier cars.

At nearly $40k, this is not a ripping deal by any means but for the right buyer it could provide some value. I would much rather have this car and the sound of that aircooled engine behind me than a similarly priced 996 cab. I know there may be some maintenence looming here due to inactivity, but for some reason I would have a higher level of confidence with the 964 than the water cooled cars.
The 964 also sports the classic look of a 911, no P-car since has had that 911 style. It seems that the 993, 996, and the 997 have all gotten a little further away from that iconic profile. Put that way, $40k for a nearly new water cooled 964 seems like something I would want in my garage.

Nothing particularly outstanding about that car to justify that price. They didn’t make or sell many 964’s in 1994 as the 993 was already on sale in Europe. There are far more 964 cabs in the market than coupes and the coupe is much more desirable. The seller rings true in that by 1994 all the flaws were gone but actually by 1992 the 964 was a fantastic car. I would suspect you’re looking at replacing a lot of rubber parts on a car that’s not been used. God only knows how many seals need to be replaced. I would spend 15 grand less and buy a 30 to 60k mile 92 or 93.

I wish I knew more about Porsches. IS the 964 the most bug free air cooled one? I think I would want an air cooled car if I was to get one. I have been a Corvair owner for almost 30 years. Same thing right?

Hey there Bob. Bug free is in the eye of the beholder. I would say the most bug free 911 is the ’97 993 but some may think otherwise. The ’94 964′s are a darn nice car, I have a good friend who has one with 175k and he has had very few problems. Sure it leaks a little oil, but being a Corvair guy you must be used to that

At this point in their life cycle just about any air cooled 911 you buy should have any bugs taken care of, they’re not exactly new cars these days.
The easiest to live with on a daily basis if you need things like real working A/C and some reasonable creature comforts would be a 993 (1995-98) and then a 964 (1990-94) In the 964′s the 92-94 cars are clearly a notch better than the 90 and 91′s.
You could easily find a 1999-2001 996 based 911 which is better performing and has better comfort at a cheaper price than a sweet air cooled but I dont care for the water pumpers especially the 996′s
