Motorsports Monday: 1990 BMW 325i

I feel sometimes that the BMW E30 3 series is kind of like the Mazda Miata of the classic German car world. It’s the answer to almost every automotive question. Whether you want a modern classic to cruise in, a track day warrior or a practical commuter vehicle, there’s an E30 for everyone. This particular one came to our attention via our friends at Classic Car Club Manhattan. One of their clients, Mike, has it up for sale. This is one sleeper of a 325i sedan, with an S50 3.2 liter engine under the hood. Want a dual purpose street/track day car? This would be an excellent solution.

Euro S50B30 bored out to a 3.2 with Group N cams. Dyno’d 275 whp with hot air intake in the summer. It has since been fitted with a Castro Motorsports CAI.
Motor rebuilt by Chris Fletcher – Chris was one of the master engine builders at Team PTG and now runs Fletcher Made Horsepower. Motor has less than 5K miles on rebuild.
Custom 3 inch exhaust from the downpipe back. No cats.

E34 M5 3.8L clutch (4 years old, less than 10K miles)

3.46LSD from an E28. Diff rebuilt by Guten parts last year and is tight!

As a former E30 owner, I’ve satisfied a lot of my craving for one of these cars, but there’s always a small part of me that wants another one. These iconic 3 series have become so collectable and talked about that I’m almost becoming numb to their allure given all of the ones we have covered at GCFSB. This one, though, grabs my attention. I’ve always had a desire to try my hand at some competition and I’m a sucker for a red 3er. Also, the purposeful stance on this one is just right. With the amount of modifications done to this car and the three sets of wheels and tires that come with it, it would be hard to replicate one like this for the price. Someone is going to have a ton of fun with this one!

    Yes! I’ve seen this one in person and it is all that it is cracked up to be. Impossible to build for anywhere near the asking price. I know that if I had $16k burning a hole in my pocket I’d buy this…or maybe a couple miatas, but you get the point.

    I love this car and have no doubt it cost a fortune to build however I think $12k is a more realistic price range. A track car with a full cage has a very limited audience.

    @ Greg: The owner says the cage is bolt in… should be pretty easy to remove. The rest of the build sounds like it was aimed at street driving just as much as track driving.

    @Greg: $12k would be a joke for this car. I hope you realize this is a euro S50…not the neutered US version. The motor alone is probably 7k, not counting the work he has put into it.

    @ John I know what a euro S50b30 is, 286 hp and has individual throttle butterflies on each cylinder unlike the US S50 which is a bored and stroked M50 240 hp. Not sure where you came up with a value of $7k for an S50 when S54s sell for $4-5k… My point is that regardless of the parts this is a track car with 200k miles and in my opinion it will not do 16k or even 14k. We shall see.

    Hi Greg, I’m the owner and I love a good debate about car values as much as the next guy. I think you’ll find that while you can get S54s for $5K, most of them are going to be a little tired and most them don’t come with a full tear down and rebuild from Fletcher Made Horsepower. You may have noticed the $12K invoice for that in my pictures. It’s a ** little bit ** healthier than you’re average euro S50 and put down 275WHP in the summer time, before I installed a proper CAI. Of course, the 3.2L crank helps…. Also, maybe I didn’t express myself clearly enough, but this is NOT just a track car. I built it specifically so that it could be driven on the street as well as to and from the track in relative comfort. There’s working A/C, power windows, locks, stereo, full factory sound insulation, and I didn’t go crazy with coil overs and super stiff springs. It’s using almost new J stock suspension from Turner Motor Sport and would work reasonably well as a daily driver. Of course, I’m not going to change your opinion but I wanted to make sure the GCfsb readership had an accurate representation of my car. Thanks for listening!

    Mike I really like your car and hope my comments did not in any way sound negative. As this is the German Cars For Sale comment section I was just expressing my views about the market value of a featured car. I hope you get your asking price but I still think track usage and cage will keep many buyers away, as will the high chassis miles. Best of luck with your sale.
