1975 Mercedes 450SEL 46k miles

On one hand I want to let people know that the prices of good w116 and w123 Mercedes have been steadily climbing. On the other hand the more we talk about it the less of a chance their is of me finding a bargain on what use to be an under appreciated classic, the w116.

This beautiful U.S. version 450SEL has covered a mere 46,000 miles. The car features a stunning red interior, with complementary subtle red pinstripe on the exterior, that is likely contributing to the bidding on this car.

Things look factory fresh with all the parts in the right places. Correct painted hubcaps and original Becker Grand Prix, have been saved rather than tossed for ugly aftermarket parts that are so common on these.

The engine bay is clean, the original tool kit complete, the A/C blows cold, the original manuals come with the car. These are all things that occasionally get over looked, combined together they paint a picture of good owner care and add to buyer interest.

Bidding is up to $9,000, with the reserve not met. I’ve said this before, 450SEL drivers could be had in the sub $2,000 range, some even into sub $1,000, not that long ago. We have seen several Benzs recently from the 70s and 80s show, still reasonable, but surprisingly strong prices. The w116 was a well crafted car and the appreciation monetarily and emotionally is growing. I can’t say it any better than what the seller writes: “these W116 chassis cars were made to be driven and clean low mileage examples like this one are getting very hard to find.”

Original Owner, 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300E With 58k Miles

The W124 is one of those revered Mercedes-Benzes that has enthusiasts pine for the days of this German manufacturer’s engineering feats. Introduced in 1985 as a replacement for the equally legendary W123 lineup, the 300E was the bread and butter mid sized sedan for Mercedes and came equipped with the ubiquitous 3.0 liter straight six, producing 178 horsepower. Here we have an exceptionally well cared for, one owner early version of the 300E for sale in Maryland.

I am the original owner of this, garage kept, covered, hand washed, pretty day toy. Never driven in inclement weather. Not a mark, ding or dent on this car. Original factory spare, tools still in factor wrapper. New tires about 10,000 miles ago. Car has 58,000 miles. Dealer 60,000 mile service done within the last 2 months at a cost of $1,500. Automatic, cruise control, A/C, AM/FM Cassette player, electric adjustable seats with memory, sun roof, 6 cylinder 3.0 liter gas engine.

Getting ready to retire, and I currently have too many cars and am selling this one and an original owner 230SLK in the the same condition. This is a car that is known for longevity. I see them often with 200,000 plus miles on them. For the price of a used Honda you can have a virtually new Mercedes that has a lot of useful life left.

Like the 230E I featured a few months back, I believe this 300E represents the qualities that Mercedes-Benz built it’s reputation on: restrained luxury, timeless design and excellence in engineering. With less than 60,000 miles on the clock, this car has a lot of life left and even though $14,000 seems steep for a 24 year old sedan, the owner is willing to negotiate and honestly, I don’t think you could buy a more durable car for the price.

Even though I sold my 2007 C Class Mercedes this week, I must say I miss my father’s 190E and 400E and believe that the 1980s and 1990s produced some of the best that Mercedes had to offer. I’m certain that someday, I’ll own another Benz from this era. They are truly usable classics.

I am selling my 2006 Audi S4 6spd Avant that is Dolphin Grey with Black Leather with 60K miles. I am the 3rd owner and purchased it from a very good friend of mine.

The car is in excellent condition and is essentially stock, however it does have the following upgrades:

– B7 RS4 Black Grill
– 19×8.5 Rotiform MIA Wheels with Machined face and new Nitto 555 Tires
– Factory RNS-E Radio/Navigation with factory Blue Tooth and iPod connection

The car has a California Salvage Title on it due to having the engine replaced. This vehicle has never been involved in any kind of accident and I have a clean CarFax to prove this.

I purchased the car from a friend that was an avid Audi owner. The previous owner unfortunately damaged the original engine while driving in the rain in January of 2010. He drove through a puddle and sucked up a small amount of water which hydrolocked the engine. This was unfortunately due to him not having in place the passenger side fender liner, and that is where the air box sucks in air.

His insurance company, AAA, ended up total losing the car since a new motor could not be sourced from Audi as they no longer make complete engines. I purchased the car from him in March of 2010 and took it to a shop in Long Beach, CA that specializes in Audi vehicle repairs called Raven Motorsports. (www.ravenms.com)

The technicians at Raven had available a fresh engine from a 2005 S4 that had 45K miles on it, and sold it to me with a 6 month warranty. While the engine was replaced, they also did the following

– New Plugs
– New Coil Packs
– New Belts
– New AC Compressor

– New Oil Pressure Sensor

The car was completed in April with its new motor and it has been my wifes car ever since. We have now recently purchased a 2011 S4, so this car must go.

The car comes will all the receipts and maintenance records going back to new, along with all the receipts for the new engine. Also included is all the documentation from the prior owners insurance company detailing why it was a total loss.

The car has been garage kept its entire life and was just recently detailed. The inside and outside is in truly exceptional shape.

I am asking $22,500 which is an excellent price considering other B7 S4 Avants go for $28K to $30K+

1990 560SEC AMG Widebody

This is a genuine AMG car with all the appropriate markings. The car has 37,000 miles and the seller wants $28,000. That is a lot less than the original cost. This would have been very close to the top Mercedes two door you could purchase when it was new. The ask price is high, but genuine unmolested AMG cars can bring big dollars. The car would get close to $30,000 if it had an AMG modified engine along with the bodywork, but this one retains its stock 5.6 liter V8. The seller seems to have had some confusion as to whether the car had a 6 liter AMG mill. Confusion like that can be a bit of a warning sign because having the original documentation and provenance on a car like this adds a lot to the value. The seller does state he has the original “guarantee” from AMG.
AMG speedometer and interior badges add to the package. Plus very expensive original AMG three piece rims fill out the widened wheel arches.
The description could use some more depth and I really don’t understand why people selling cars like this don’t spend a little extra time getting decent photographs.
As always AMG cars from this era and earlier are collectible and should retain their value well. This one is a bit costly in today’s market, but sure looks good.

The car drives perfect. The steering wheel is absolutely dead straight when the car is going straight. An amazing car. It is difficult to keep a 1997 looking this good. I congratulate the seller.

Low mileage R107 SLs aren’t that uncommon, but according to the Standard Catalog of Mercedes-Benz, there were only 738 SL600s produced in 1997. While the horsepower difference from the V8 to V12 is not entirely great, those who have driven them say that V12s bring a whole new level of smoothness to the driving experience. If you have the means and the resources to keep one of these classics on the road (tune ups are not going to be cheap), this is a relatively affordable way into a clean future classic.

1984 Mercedes 300TD No Reserve

We’ve seen several of these wagons pass by and have been impressed at what they have sold for. This one is no exception. The seller puts together a top notch ad for a top notch car and it is being sold at no reserve.
With over 117,000 miles this wagon already has spirited bids passed $14,000.
The car has excellent service history and had an engine overhaul at 96,000 miles. The car wears original paint and is optioned with the 3rd seat, tow hitch, Euro lights, and a rare MB cargo cover.

1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 with 56k miles

Every now and then a fairly unmolested 190E 2.3-16 crops up, and here we have one for sale in Arkansas on eBay this week. While the car is low mileage, it has been in storage for the past 13 years, it appears to be in well preserved condition.

The seller states:

Up for auction is a 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth. This car was a one owner car until about 2 months ago. The Car was bought new off the showroom floor by a doctor who had owned the car until we got it from his wife. The wife had it titled to her name after a divorce. When she titled the car she didn’t know what the mileage was on because it was in storage so it appears the DMV guessed the mileage at 111,111. If you look at the car you can tell that what the odometer is showing is the correct mileage. The Car has been in storage for the most of the last 13 years.

The car was inherited and we have to many cars already so she is being let go.

The 2.3-16 was sold in the US market for model years 1985-86 and a total of only 2,229 were produced for this market. The car presented here is the 201st “16 valve” brought into the US. The car currently shows 56,800 miles.

As you can see this car was fully loaded directly from the factory. Only option other options that were available for the 2.3-16 was rear head restraints and an automatic transmission. According to someone who knows…this car was approx. $39,000 new in 1986 making it a very expensive model.

Current condition:

This car has been very well maintained over the last 24 years. And when I say very well maintained, I mean the car looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I was told that the car was only serviced at the Mercedes dealership and according to the service stickers it was last at the dealership at 54,000 miles. Here is a list of the work that has been done since we got the car.

Replaced:
All four tires replaced 11/16/10
Distributor cap and rotor
Clutch slave cylinder

Needs fixed still:
Electric antenna motor
AC Blower (it was working when we got it, but the blower just stopped, the AC compressor is still working)
Rear window switch (the window motor works, the switch just needs replaced.

Overall the condition of the car is excellent. There is a scratch on the drivers door, a scuff on the bottom of the front bumper and a scuff inside the passenger front wheel well. The leather is in excellent condition with no rips or tears. Carpets are clean, dash isn’t cracked, door panels are excellent. Under the hood is clean with no oil leaks and unmodified. The underside of the car is very nice with no rust issues of any kind and no signs of corrosion or salt. The car runs and drives great! Everything works except what I mentioned above. The ride is super smooth with no pulling in any direction. It always starts and shifts out real smooth. This car was someones baby for 24 years.

Please keep in mind you are buying a nearly 25 year old. There is no warranty of any kind and you are buying the car as is, where is. I have the car for sale locally and reserve the right to end the auction early if need be.

There’s no telling what the reserve price may be, however, for it’s mileage and condition, my best guess for value would be in the $7,000 to $9,000 range, possibly bringing over $10,000 given the right level of interest from bidders. It will be interesting to see if this meets its reserve and where it goes from there, because cars like this tend to give a good picture of the current market.

1991 BMW M5

We received the following listing from a reader of ours who has his E34 M5 for sale on MyE28.com. The second generation M5 needs no introduction on this site, as it straddles the gap between the limited run first generation and the legendary E39 M5 with its 400 horsepower V8. These E34s are not too common these days, but good ones do come up for sale here and there. This one, while well used, has an extensive service history and is ready to enjoy.

Things to Consider & Points to Ponder:
My M5 has been driven by all of its previous owners. It is not a garage queen or show car. It is exactly what I wanted in an e34 M5…a “nicely preserved and maintained daily driver.” Exterior trim and paint have been well kept by me and the previous owners. At some point, the entire car was resprayed. I would consider it a good job but the prep work could have been a bit better in some places. Presently, I would rate the condition of the paint 7.5/10. The interior has been very well kept (8/10). There are no rips or tears in the leather. There is no rust or corrosion on the car. However, the heat shielding / sound proofing around the factory final silencer (muffler) is peeling off in places (see photos from PPI below). Also, the undercarriage is clean but some careless fool caused some jack damage to the forward frame rails (see link to PPI photos below). This could have been easily prevented with the judicious use of a wooden block. Finally, at the next valve adjustment (due @ ~186k miles), a source of minor oil seepage will need to be addressed at the front of the valve cover and/or at the gasket where the distributor housing attaches to the head. Again, this is minor but is annoying to me. At present, if the car is parked for 2 or 3 days, a nickel-sized oil drip is evident on the garage floor or driveway.

All original VIN tags in place except RF fender, which was replaced with a OE BMW unit at some point in the car’s history. The body is in nice condition. The car tracks straight / true and exhibits no unusual handling characteristics whatsoever.

This M5 ticks all the right boxes for me. Given this model’s rarity, you will oftentimes find ones with insanely high mileage that are clapped out, or cream puff examples with under 50k miles that you would be afraid to take on a long journey. This car hits the sweet spot and has the documentation to back it up. For around $10,000, it’s a hell of a lot of car and should have plenty of enjoyment left to give.

1995 Mercedes Benz C36 AMG in Red

Not many of the 5200 C36 cars produced were in red. This model with 166,000 miles on it still looks nice and bright. The seller wants $5,000 to take it home. Not a bad price for what some consider the successor to the sporty 190E 2.5-16v. 1997 is the best year of the C36, but the earlier models, like this 1995, were just as exciting under the hood with nearly 300 horsepower from the M3 fighting inline 6. For a car with some hand built AMG craftsmanship the price seems like a bargain, however you may actually have some room to negotiate as high mileage C36s in more standard silver and black do change hands for less. The fact that this car has dealer service records, if they check out, it is worth paying the full $5k ask. The car is on Craigslist LA for $5,500. This C36 also seems to have avoided boy racer add-ons that clutter up the wolf in sheep’s clothes intention. People will look back at the C36 as one of grandfathers of what took AMG from specialty tuner to more mainstream masses.
