PCA Owned Guards Red 968
June 25, 2010 by Ben
I’ve always been drawn to the 968. The first time I saw one was at a PCA track day; I was 13-14 years old and it looked awesome parked in white with 16” Cup wheels. I remember not knowing what it was and then assuming that it had to be a face-lifted version of the 928 because of the round headlights. I was soon embarrassed when I tried to impress some of the drivers and subsequently informed that it was actually the final iteration of the 944 powered by a reworked version of the second largest 4-cylinder in production car history.
My ignorance paid off, as someone overheard me asking questions about the 944/968 and offered me a ride in a 944 S2. That ride solidified my love for the balanced and beautiful-handling front engine Porsche.
There’s a reasonably priced 1993 968 Coupe for sale on Pelican Forums. It looks brilliant in Guards Red with the 18” Boxster wheels. Since the owner is a PCA member, this 968 has also seen a few nice upgrades such as cross drilled rotors, upgraded stereo, limited slip, struts and sways. It’s listed here on Pelican for $9K and up for auction on eBay.

While 139,000 miles is a lot, the owner ensures us that “she has had recent tune up including replaced water pump, timing belt and radiator. The car is mechanically sound with no issues.” Any time I hear someone refer to their car as a “she” I’m inclined to think that they actually care about their automobile. Hell, I talk to my car like it was a human…weird I know…but I also change her oil every 2,000 miles and give her a bath on Sundays which is weird to some people.
