My luck has not been as bad, per se. My 2006 VR6 GTI, '04 T-Reg, and '07 Rabbit were fairly reliable by VW standards. But each of them had nagging issues. The constant breaking of the window regulators or check engine lights in the GTI. The brittle interior of the T-Reg, and the overall poor quality of the Rabbit. For the premium that VW prices their autos they do not produce a quality product.

During my Boston days, I had a friend with a V6 Touareg and apparently he had an issue with the car and could not remove his ignition key from the ignition module itself. After dealing with an absolutely horrendous 2000 VW GTI 2.0 liter, this did not surprise me.

Also, I have never come close to touching a VW product in the past decade with a 10 foot pole.

They really are, the only problem is you are stuck with VW quality. I looked at used V8 Touaregs this summer and was amazed how poorly they are aging. However, I would be willing to overlook a ton of cosmetic issues with the TDI.

These things are total beasts. Great find. If I had to have an SUV, I think one of these rare torque-monsters would be high on the list.
