A few years back I met a lovely older woman while grabbing coffee. As we said our goodbyes she turned to get into her 912 soft window Targa. I inquired as to how long she had the car and she went on how she is the one and only owner and has not been driven by anyone other than her. We said our goodbyes and I told her if she ever decided to sell and wanted it to go to a good home she should give me a call. She smiled, and drove away and that conversation and car were burned into my memory. When this 1967 912 Soft Window Targa popped up on Craigslist I had to share it with you all. These cars are extremely rare in finding an unmolested example has become challenging over time. So with that:
“For sale is a beautiful RARE 1967 Porsche 912 Targa Soft Window, in excellent condition. This Porsche is one of only 483 soft window Targa’s produced in 1967. Everything works on the car and it is 100% reliable. The car is a blast to drive and will make its next owner extremely happy. This Porsche has a 911 2.0 engine in it which only has 3,000 miles on it. This Porsche is a 3 owner car. I purchased the vehicle about 9 years ago. The owner before me had the car in storage for 30 years before I bought the car. The car was delivered to its first owner in 1967 to Jacksonville, Florida.
When I bought the car in 2000, I had a complete ground up restoration done on the car. The paint color is Magnetic Red and is a 3 step paint process. The paint shines like new and the entire car is rust free. The car has never before seen snow and the under carriage is in excellent shape. The interior in the car is all original except for the carpet. The interior is in excellent condition with no cracking or tears on it.
The engine on the car is a 911 2.0 engine. The rebuilt engine has around 3,000 miles on it and runs very strong. The engine was totally rebuilt by a master Porsche technician who has been working on Porsche’s his entire life. The engine has 40 UID Webber carburetors. On the engine there are also SSI heat exchangers. The car also has a Perma Tune electric ignition installed. The oil tank on the car is from a later model Porsche. The transmission on the car is a 912 Lemans pattern 5 speed transmission. This transmission is a lower gear ratio then the 911 transmission. It is original and has been completely restored. The Sachs clutch kit was installed when the 911 engine was put in 3,000 miles ago. The exhaust is a Dansk sport muffler and is a dual output exhaust. This exhaust was also installed 3,000 miles ago. The car also has a Pioneer head unit model number DEH-P520. The wheels on the car are 15″ Fuchs are in excellent condition. The tires are Dunlop Sport tires size 205/50/R15. The tires are like new.
The Porsche has its current inspection and the sticker are valid until July of 2010.”
At $25k this is a solid investment, I have seen these cars sell from $35k for solid drivers to $50k for fully restored examples. This car with the 2.o liter engine and what I believe is not a factory color falls into the driver category. The new buyer could drive this “as is” or restore back to factory specs and have a very rare Porsche. What would you do? For the low cost of entry I would be tempted to drive it and replace any broken bits with factory correct replacements.
