Rare Air: 2004 BMW 330Ci

If the R107 560SL was the expression of luxurious drop-top motoring in the late 1980s, the BMW 3-series convertible became a fixture of summer homes, sun-up top-down motoring along the coast, and adding a touch of sport to 4-seat open air drives thereafter. They’re intensely popular; I don’t live in the most convertible friendly area of the country by any means, but you can’t go much more than a few miles without seeing at least one convertible 3-series around me. They typically come in two flavors around here; look at me M3s and base model 325 or 328 models. But the E46 330 struck a balance between the two, offering a fair bit of sport without the bills associated with the M badge. Powered by the M54 to the tune of nearly 230 horsepower (even more in the ZHP package cars), the 330Ci was also a great looking car especially when equipped with the Sport Package. However, this particular example has some really specially selected options that make it one of the prettiest E46 convertibles I’ve seen in a while:

Of course, for me the big headline is seeing those Style 71 BBS 18″ wheels. Boy, they look spectacular and are one of the best looking wheels the E46 carried – that’s saying a lot, since the chassis enjoyed a run of particularly attractive wheels. Infrequently seen too is Gray Green Metallic paint; in this case, not an individual or custom color like the seller suggests, but still a great shade which is matched superbly by the brown leather interior. Going through the many photos provided by the seller, the condition of this car is superior and well in line with the 60,000 miles reported. Ultimately, a 6-speed ZHP convertible or M3 convertible may be more desirable to enthusiasts (especially considering the automatic transmission), and at this price point you could certainly look at getting either of those two options. Near $14,000 also opens you to the market of the E93 twin-turbocharged 335i with folding hardtop. However, if you’re just looking for a very nice and well optioned 330Ci to enjoy some limitless sky motoring, this is a well priced and beautiful condition example of a car that is likely more rare in specification than either of the two headline models.

7 years ago, I found my sister a CPO black-on-black 2006 330iC with nearly identical specs – right down to the sport package, the Style 71’s, and unfortunately, the automatic transmission. It just tripped 61K miles, almost the same as the example above.

It really is a beautiful car – I think the design has held up rather well for something penned in the last century. It remains comfortable and enjoyable to drive, and even with the automatic, it has adequate power for most occasions.

Perhaps with a manual, in this condition, this one would almost be worth the asking price.

Its easy to become jaded after seeing the same color schemes over and over again, but this particular palette is real eye-opener! The original owner deserves a nod for his/her artistic eye. I love these rims, but I feel they’re fighting the overall impression just a bit. Maybe 17s would have toned-down the bling a bit? Exquisite nonetheless.
