RENNtech Mercedes-Benz 500E Sleeper
January 3, 2010 by Ben
“Performance without Compromise” – This is the motto of Florida-based Mercedes-Benz tuner, RENNtech. Started by Hartmut Feyhl in 1989, RENNtech is known as one of the leading authorities for performance modifications for Mercedes-Benz AMG models. Feyhl gained a great amount of experience and expertise over his 12 years as the North American technical director at AMG. He was also heavily involved in the “AMG Hammer” project.
This brings us to our featured auction, a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E with RENNtech modifications. Hand build in co-operation with Porsche, the 500E was known as the “wolf in sheep’s clothing”. In this example, the already beefed up dual camshaft 32-valve, 322 hp V8 gets an updated ECU chip, rear exhaust, carbon fiber airbox that the owner says is good for an additional 45hp. You can imagine that this will shave some time off the already impressive performance figures: 0-60 mph in 5.5 to 6.0 seconds, quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 101 mph. The top speed was limited at 155 mph…but my guess is that the ECU chip removes that governor.
Here are my two gripes with the car. First is the mileage. I know Mercedes builds solid cars and bulletproof engines but 150,000 miles is a significant amount for a tuned V8, especially if you’re going to drive it like a sports car. Second, I don’t think beige has any place being on a sports sedan, especially the exterior. Luckily the trunk needs to be repainted, so why not do yourself a favor and paint the whole car black, the color it should have been from the factory. Besides those two points, I think this is a great opportunity to own a rare Mercedes classic at a reasonable price.

Beige is the ultimate color for a sleeper, and the 500E is the ultimate sleeper. It’s THE color to have if you want to avoid interactions with your local law enforcement.
