Stretch Your Dollar: 2003 Audi A8L

While they’re no longer the largest, fastest or most luxurious executive sport sedans on the market, the D2 Audi A8/S8 does still offer enthusiasts a substantial package for a very unsubstantial amount of money. While I’ve spent a lot of time previously covering my favorite S8 models, the normal A8 and stretched A8L tone down the sport but also come to the market at an even more budget-friendly price. To maximize your value, look towards the A8L models. These were expensive sedans back in the early 2000s, though today’s prices really dwarf the MSRP of $67,200 for the lang model. They came mostly loaded, but there were still some options that you could select such as the 18″ 5-spoke wheels shown on this 2003 example. With low miles, in a classic silver/black color combination that channels the original ASF concept that signaled the A8’s then futuristic shape and design, and in fantastic one owner shape, they don’t get much nicer than this:

One of my favorite feature listings was a 2001 A8L I wrote up back in 2014. Similarly equipped and with a near faultless history, the discussion of value with the seller was an unfortunate tale. Fears of transmission failure and a general lack of appreciation for older Audi models (especially large automatic sedans) meant that prices for these A8Ls really topped out in the $5,000 – $6,000 range back then. Today they’ve dropped even more, but at least in look this A8L is close to the match of our feature listing car. No records are disclosed so you’ll want to factor in an expensive timing belt change and transmission service, plus the A8L has some unique bits like larger brakes which can be pricier than the normal A8 bits. Still, the current bid on this no reserve auction is $50 below $4,000 at time of writing with two days to go. Is it possible to get more car in this condition?

Gorgeous and what a used car for the money — as was that prior one, I sure remember that one.

    I remember that one too…sigh.

Seller is a little optimistic on that 310hp engine being 360hp.

$7,100 at the final gavel. I’d say not too bad. Definitely a lot of car for the money. But if above-noted Pearl White over Tan sold 18 months ago for less than the $6,500 asking price (from a private seller who had all service records no less), and if prices on these D2s have continued to depreciate, then this seller did OK…especially for the Bay.

Frankly, quite a bit more than I expected. Still a good deal compared to S8 prices where equal condition to this would be double the price and this isn’t half the car.

This is still up on the seller’s Website. That could mean various things. However, I find it interesting that the seller has dropped the price from $8,995 to $7,999. It has not been relisted on eBay. Makes me suspicious of the “no reserve” auction.
