Tuner Tuesday: 1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 – REVISIT

ag_640

The ex-Vlad 1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 with plenty of modifications that we wrote up nearly two years ago has resurfaced for sale again. Offered by the buyer from last time around after covering only 3,000 miles, the asking price is close to what the seller paid. However, a few things of note – several items are no longer working, the bodywork is cracked and – most notably – the BBS RS wheels are an optional extra for $3,000. Has the W201 market appreciated 50% on a questionable example like this in a year and a half?

1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6

For me, the 190E almost defines the perfect Mercedes-Benz. I’m not a fan of huge cars, so the W201 certainly works on a size basis for me but still embodies all the great things I loved about this brand from the past, including timeless design, solidity and dependability. This 1991 190E 2.6 for sale in South Carolina has the tasty combination of the inline-6 paired to the seldom seen 5-speed manual gearbox. The rare shade of Bornit Metallic makes this baby Benz all the more attractive.

Manual mates: 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 vs. 1993 190E 2.6 Sportline

The time has once again come that you can not purchase a new Mercedes-Benz in the United States with a manual gearbox. The SLK250 was the last to be equipped as such. Even on a stroll around Frankfurt, Germany last week, I spotted few new Mercedes-Benzes with a proper gearshift on the console. As time passes on, they are only going to become more rare. So we might as well look back to more vintage models to satisfy our dynamic driving needs. We’ll take a look at two very different 190E models today, both equipped with 5-speed manual gearboxes. We’ll start first with this European spec 1985 190E 2.3-16 for sale in Florida.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 Limited Edition – REVISIT

The 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 Limited Edition we featured last year is back up for sale, this time surfacing in California. Wearing Euro market headlamps, this final year W201 has accumulated just under 5,500 miles in that time and comes at a considerable discount since when we last saw it. Rarely do you get a chance to acquire such a rare piece of Mercedes-Benz history for such little cash. Given the choice between the new CLA and this stately compact sedan, I’d reach for the keys to the original baby Benz every time.

1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16

Technically, this post could be filed under “Motorsports Monday.” The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 was the contemporary of the E30 M3 we saw in Carter’s post earlier today, a darling of the DTM, or German Production Cars Championship, started in 1984. Originally intended for rallying purposes, the Cosworth tuned W201 190E was deemed a bit uncompetitive for such an event by the boffins at Mercedes, so they went to the track with it, instead. As a result, a homologated version was released to the public shortly thereafter. While this particular 190E 2.3-16 for sale in Philadelphia has low miles, it has a number of issues that need to be addressed. Still, the rarity of these special W201s make this a car worth saving.
