I’ve featured a good number of early 911s lately, and quite a few Targas in general, but this one might be my favorite. Those who are frequent readers will know why: it’s all about the color. Were this a 911S, rather than the entry-level T, I imagine I wouldn’t be the only one completely captivated by it. We aren’t told the specific color, but my guess would be Pastellblau. It’s one of the early choices in the line that would later include Mexico Blue and Riviera Blue. With this particular example, that wonderful exterior is complemented by a Tan interior. Some may prefer a black interior, but for me the Tan is the perfect contrast. Altogether this is a fantastic early Targa and sure to attract a good deal of attention.
I am, by nature, very much a visual person; I’m a visual learner and respond quite a bit to color and appearance and things of that nature. As such, I am always captivated by 911s that come in colors I haven’t seen. That probably applies to a lot of people to some degree, but I am fairly certain I pass by a good number of otherwise fantastic examples that just so happen to be in colors I see all the time. This all brings us to the 911 we see here, a Green Metallic 1970 Porsche 911E Targa, located in Michigan, with 154,140 miles on it. On the surface this Green Metallic doesn’t seem like it would be all that rare of a color, after all we see Green 911s pretty often though certainly not as often as some of the others. But I cannot recall seeing one like this on an early-911. Irish Green would be the closest relative, but that’s a non-metallic color with more brightness than the green we see here. If I’m honest, Irish Green is a better color, but this slightly darker metallic hue still has a lot going for it and it would be great to see it under the sunlight. Metallic greens tend to show very well in various lighting conditions and I suspect this one is no different.
Last week we took a look at a 1973 Audi 100 Coupe S. It was a bit of a gamble, with photos from 1990 and a not particularly detailed description. It was also a 3-speed automatic, and though the 100 isn’t really known as a driver’s car I’d still wager that most enthusiasts would prefer the manual option for these vintage Audis. As if to rectify all of the faults with that listing, around the same time another 100 Coupe S popped up. Now, to say that these cars are rare in the U.S. is an understatement, so it was pretty cool to see a second and more detailed listing appear. With current photos, a fresh restoration, super low miles and a much more detailed description, it certainly looked like the one to choose between the two – except for two not so minor things…
Even in the face of an increasing drive towards economy, manufacturers are still battling it out in the horsepower race. Mercedes has been one of those companies leading the charge over the last decade, with some formidable performance entries with forced induction V8 and V12 engines. This tradition started years prior with this car, the 300SEL 6.3. Taking the M100 V8 from the 600 and shoehorning it into the smaller W109 S-class was no small task, but the result was a luxury saloon that could hit 60 mph in just a tick over six seconds. This was remarkable performance for the day, competing favorably with a number of American muscle cars while providing unmatched comfort at the same time. This 300SEL 6.3 for sale in California is a four-owner car, originally purchased by the owner of a Mercedes-Ben franchise in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Walking down the street this week I came across a rather uncanny site, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe. Sitting nonchalantly on a city street amongst dreary modern day machinery, it brought a smile to my face to know someone is intrepid enough to use such a majestic automobile in an urban environment. The car scene is pretty dead around the Washington, DC area, which is part of the reason I’m looking to get out of here as soon as I can. Everyone here is so fixated on politics and their job that it can be hard finding fellow petrolheads to connect with. Nevertheless, you do see some classics wandering about on the roads from time to time. Sadly I didn’t get a chance to chat the owner up in this case.
This 1970 280SE we see here for sale in California isn’t of the V8 variety, but shares the low grille look of the aforementioned 3.5 with a striking two tone blue and white color combination over a sumptuous blue leather interior. These W111 coupes were some of the last hand-built Mercedes-Benzes to leave the factory and considering what you spend for similar vintage W113 SLs these days, these six-cylinder coupes represent a bit of a relative bargain for the collector.
