1989 Porsche 930 Cabriolet

This is a first: I have never seen this color on any Porsche let alone a 911. Here we have an Apricot Beige 1989 Porsche 930 Cabriolet, located in Cleveland, with Mahogany leather interior and just 21,575 miles on it. Apricot Beige was only offered for two years and this is the only year it would have been available on the 930. So we have a final-year 930, meaning it has the 5-speed transmission rather than the 4-speed the 930 had borne for its entire existence, and a rare exterior color only available during that final year. While the color isn’t likely to garner the widest appeal since its fairly obscure and doesn’t fit into most people’s typical preferences, the combination of these details should draw attention. I think that this is a Cabriolet actually helps this color as the contrast with the interior stands out more and on a Coupe I don’t know if it would look quite as good. It certainly would fit the personality of the 930 even less so than it does here.

1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

Walk around any new car lot these days and one thing seems to be lacking: color. Even scanning the Porsche lot I visited a few days ago, there was not much on hand outside of silver, white and black. Sure, these colors are good for resale, but where’s everyone’s imagination these days? What ever happened to some of the bright colors of yore that graced some of the cars we know and love? Signal Red might not be your typical S-class hue, but it sure makes a statement on this 1989 560SEC. After all, this was a car devised as a personal luxury coupe. Why not personalize it? This 560SEC for sale in Seattle is closing in on 100,000 miles, has been garaged since new and comes replete with service records from the Mercedes-Benz dealer.

1989 BMW 635CSi

Having featured one final year model earlier today, let’s take a look at another. The BMW E24 6 series coupe didn’t make it into the 1990s, making way for the radically different E31 8 series coupe. In my opinion, these were two very different beasts. The 6 series was based around evolutionary styling, whereas the 8 series was more revolutionary with its concealed headlamps and wedge shape. While I like both of these BMWs, the 6 series always had a way of making me lust after it. That raked front end was just too irresistible and by the end of the production run, we even saw two special versions in the US, the potent M6 and leather-clad L6. This 635CSi for sale in Oklahoma apes a bit of that M look, sitting on later model Style 5 alloys and looking all the more aggressive for it. It also has the five-speed manual gearbox to get the most out of the 3.5 liter inline-6.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Silver Anniversary Edition

Like many of Porsche’s special additions the Silver Anniversary Edition Carrera, released to celebrate 25 years of 911 production, featured a host of cosmetic changes intended to set it apart from other Carreras of its day, but there wasn’t really anything in the performance realm to complement those aesthetic changes. As such, values for the special editions have tended to be higher than for standard models, but not significantly higher. I’m curious whether that will remain the case as the 911 market slows down. With only the best examples commanding premiums will the special editions remain in that category? The one here should tell us something as it appears in fantastic condition. Here we have a Silver Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Silver Anniversary Edition, located in New Jersey, with 50,942 miles on it. This one comes in the lighter of the two available colors – the other being Satin Black Metallic – to contrast with the Silk Grey interior.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe

My quest for interesting 964s continues apace and while many of them exist they are rarely easy to find. Enter the example we see here, a rare Diamond Blue Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe, located in Florida, with Marine Blue leather interior and a robust 155,102 miles on it. Readers might recall that I featured a Diamond Blue Metallic 3.2 Carrera Coupe last week with a similarly contrasting interior. That 911 offers a nice juxtaposition for grasping the changes Porsche instituted when it debuted the 964, the first full redesign the 911 had seen in over a decade. The new shape was a little rounder, a little more stocky looking. It also came with a host of technological changes, most significantly the debut of the Carrera 4 – Porsche’s first all-wheel drive 911. While the system has seen significant improvements since its debut it still stands as one of the more significant changes brought to the quirky engineering of Porsche’s most iconic road car.
