1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SE

Oscar Wilde once opined “I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.” Every time I lay eyes on a Mercedes-Benz S-class from the 1980s, those words come to mind. The W126 was sandwiched between two worlds of luxury cars. That of the W116 S-Class and it’s evolving safety and emissions equipment and the W140 S-class with its girth and over the top engineering. The W126 hits the sweet spot when it comes to executive sedans. It’s advanced without being overly complex, stylish without being trendy and comfortable without feeling like you are driving a sofa down the interstate. The short wheelbase 300SE was the “entry” level S-class towards the end of the production run, perfect for someone who wanted something just a tad smaller who didn’t need the oomph of a V8 engine. This example spotted by our reader Craig is for sale in New Jersey and belies the fact that it’s about to hit six figures on the odometer. It’s appearance looks almost fresh as new.

Double Take: Volkswagen Transporter Diesel Pickups

I’ve seen a few DoKas running around this area recently, and can’t help but smile every time they rumble by. My affinity for Vanagons is well documented on this site, but the truck versions are a great mix of funny proportions, classic style, and no-nonsense pragmatism. With that combination, any engine other than a small four-cylinder diesel would seem excessive. Luckily we have two clean examples coming from the same seller in New Jersey that – considering how small the niche market of T3 Diesel Pickups is – provide interesting options for the buyer to decide on. Double cab or single? All-original or spruced up? Turbo or no? Crazy-low mileage, or just very low? Tough choices in this Transporter Pickup Showdown!

1989 Porsche 930 Cabriolet – Originally Owned by Wayne Gretzky

Attention Canadians and/or hockey fans! Here we have a fairly special car: a Linen Grey Porsche 930 Cabriolet, located in Kansas, said to have been originally purchased by the great Wayne Gretzky. Other than a picture of the signed sun visor, which is a pretty cool touch on such a car, the seller hasn’t provided evidence of the necessary documentation to support Gretzky’s ownership, but that documentation is said to be available to those making serious inquiries. The Gretzky ownership aside there is much to like about this Porsche anyway. It is a relatively low mileage example (currently 43,915 miles) from the only year the 930 came equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and those points alone should garner plenty of attention. And while a former hockey great isn’t the sort of famous owner that might make many people take notice within the car world it’s still a excellent conversation piece added to what should already be a dynamite performer.

1989 BMW 325is

These days, it’s a struggle to find a clean E30 of any kind, let alone a 325is. So many of these cars have been stanced, track prepped or otherwise changed from their original setup that often times I wonder how many unmolested ones there are left. Though it might look it, this example isn’t completely stock but the modifications are the right kind so it’s ok in this case. How could you complain about a Dinan exhaust and engine chip, Koni adjustable shocks and upgraded HID headlights? I know some regular readers won’t particularly love the addition of an Alpine stereo unit or McIntosh amplifier/EQ, but at least they are quality components. Besides, stereo work is easy to undo and return to stock if you wish to do so, personally I’d consider swapping the head unit for a more period correct looking one that was still good enough to make use of the amp/EQ.

On the mechanical front the seller notes that much of the work associated with high mileage E30s has already been done. Clutch and top end engine work were done 27k miles ago, tires, brake pads, rotors, timing belt and more was done recently. Cosmetically, the car appears to be in great shape but I’d need many more pictures to have a truly informed opinion. In fact, if there is one major negative here it’s that the seller only posted five pictures, none of which are particularly good. Quality wise they’re okay, but with a car of this age you really want to see multiple angles both inside and out. The ad says the carpet is the only bit of the interior that shows wear. Well I’d like to see that so show me, don’t tell me!

I still don’t understand how people think they’re going to be able to attract serious buyers with such little visual information. I’ve been burned a couple times recently by sellers who take vague pictures and swear the car is near mint condition. So I take the time to go look at it and it turns out that there’s a wide variety of what constitutes “mint condition“. I don’t think this is one of those sellers who is just trying to get a face to face with you, I just think they were lazy with the picture taking. These cars photograph well even when they’re in shit condition so if you’ve got a nice on on your hands you owe it to the car and yourself to take at least ten to fifteen pictures of the damn thing. Ok, rant over.

1989 Porsche 930 Cabriolet

Yesterday we looked at a beautiful early Turbo Carrera and today we will venture to the other end of the 930 timeline for one of the last Turbos produced. Here we have a Velvet Red Metallic 1989 Porsche 930 Cabriolet, located in Miami, with Red interior and just 36,783 miles on it. As this ad indicates, and which any seller of an ’89 930 surely will let you know, this was the only model year the 930 came equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. That makes them extremely attractive to collectors as performance has consistently been a key factor in differentiating the value between various 911 models, with a one-year-only version of a performance model naturally garnering serious demand. For the 911 enthusiast these cars possess a somewhat different appeal as the final year of such an iconic model. They aren’t necessarily the best performing 930s on the market as increasing weight would hold them back relative to their earlier peers, but they do represent the most refined version of the breed, an attribute enhanced by that extra gear. All in all, there are a variety of reasons to find joy in the final year of the 930 and for the driver hoping to have a Turbo Cabriolet this also would be the last model produced in large numbers among the air-cooled 911s.
