Tuner Tuesday: 1995 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet

s-l1600

For years, Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) division fulfilled the dreams of many enthusiasts, churning out examples of sports cars with rare options or models never produced by this manufacturer, such as two examples of the 993 Speedster and a 993 Turbo Cabriolet, of which 14 were built. Those rare drop tops, however, did not have the twin-turbo engine that was featured in the 993 Turbo and Turbo S. This 993 Turbo Cabriolet, however, does. It is a recreation, but a really good one at that. Nothing here screams aftermarket, but for Tuner Tuesday, we’re going to classify this car as such since underneath it is a C4 Cabriolet. Ever wondered “what if” if Porsche had pulled the trigger on this model?

1995 BMW M3 Lightweight

The year was 1994, and BMW brought some pre-production M3s in Dakar Yellow to various tracks around the U.S. to engage their primary target audience; enthusiasts. I still remember seeing them and being both very excited and slightly let down. From a performance standpoint, even in turned-down U.S. form the M3 was a potent small sedan. 240 horsepower was top of the small car market back then and around a track, stock for stock the E36 was easily a match for the outgoing fan-favorite E30. Coupled with an eye-searing color, it was an impressive and modern package that I loved. But I also loved the street-racer aspect of the E30, and that was something that the E36 didn’t capture well….at first. That was remedied later in 1995 with the introduction of the “CSL” version of the E36. Stripped out, available only in Alpine White and with Motorsports GmbH details throughout, the M3 Lightweight channeled both the E9 3.0CSL racers that started the M trend and captured the spirit of the E30 with its giant, adjustable rear wing and splitter. Instantly these began popping up at track events; despite the entire production run of only 126 cars, it wasn’t uncommon in 1995 and 1996 to see 4 or 5 of these special cars turn up and trounce all the other cars with ease. Since new, these limited edition M3s have always held more value than nearly all of the rest of the model run – and as prices of all things M rise, it’s no surprise that it appears the tide is carrying them up as well:

1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

We’ll continue our brief green theme for the week with this Aventurine Green Metallic 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Florida, with 135,351 miles on it. While many surely exist we do not come across higher mileage examples of the 993 as often as with the other 911 models – not surprising given that they are the youngest of the air-cooled cars – so our grasp of the market and their values once we reach this sort of mileage is a bit less sure. As with any second-hand car those extra miles shouldn’t necessarily dissuade us from keeping it in consideration, we must simply take greater regard of its care over those miles. And as we have seen with many other examples, a higher mileage vehicle that has been well cared for actually can make for a better alternative to a car with fewer miles that has been neglected. What will be different is our approach given the general collector appeal of the 993. That places this car directly in front of us as a driver-quality example and one that an owner should be capable of getting plenty of joy from over the coming years, but without having to pay the typical 993 premiums. For those in search of that final air-cooled magic this 993 may offer great promise.

1995 Porsche 9m93 Speedster S

The great thing about the car hobby is there seems to be an almost endless stream of imagination from tuners and coachbuilders when it comes to concepts and limited production vehicles. One car in recent memory that sticks out in my mind is the Porsche 993 Speedster. Or the lack thereof. This was never officially offered by Porsche, but two were produced, one for Ferdinand Porsche and another for Jerry Seinfeld, comedian and noted Porsche collector. This hasn’t stopped people from trying to emulate those rare 911s. Ninemeister is a company based in the United Kingdom noted for its custom Porsches, and this 1995 Speedster happens to be one of them. With air-cooled Porsche popularity soaring, especially for the final batch of 993s, this could be considered one of the ultimate expressions of classic 911s.

Porsche 928 Roundup

Last month, I had the pleasure of stopping by the 19th annual 928 Frenzy in Sterling, Virginia. In all the years of being a car enthusiast, rarely have I come across a more tight knit and dedicated group of enthusiasts devoted towards one model of vehicle. I’ve learned a lot about these V8 GT cars through fellow enthusiasts over at flüssig magazine and from Jim Doerr at 928 Classics. If you are a fan or owner of the 928 and haven’t checked out either of these sites, you would be well advised to do so. These are people who are helping keep the dream alive when it comes to Porsche’s beloved V8 coupe.

The 928 is a special car and really stands apart from both its contemporaries and modern sports cars of today. While some of the 911 set deride it, the 928 was the first clean sheet design from Porsche. So good was this design, it would last almost 20 years, still looking strikingly current at the end of its production run in 928GTS form. Taking a cue from Carter’s 924 Roundup earlier in the week, let’s take a moment to pay homage to this great GT car and take a look at the different variants throughout the years, staring off with this 1978 928 for sale in Italy.
