1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

It’s an all-turbo day for me, and I think this also makes for three straight 911 Turbos I will have featured. We’ve actually been looking at quite a few air-cooled Turbos lately, though a significant portion of those examples have come from the 930. Much of that probably has to do with what attracts my attention most since there are always examples of the 993 and, to a lesser extent, the 964 to choose from, yet the 930 finds its way onto our pages most frequently. Every model deserves its due so for this one we will move to the end of the air-cooled line to look at a very vibrant 993TT. While the 930 captures attention through a nature of almost pure aggression, the 993 elicits excitement through the shapeliness of its curves and the overall beauty of its design. Even the whale tail is more subdued and molded into the 993’s lines such that it seems a natural extension of the rear. Along with those refined lines the 993 also brought with it significant refinements to driveability that go beyond the basic evolutionary steps the 911 Turbo had previously passed through. With twin turbocharging and all-wheel drive helping to both deliver and make use of the 993 Turbo’s prodigious rear-engine power, gone were some of the 930’s more diabolical handling traits. The 911 Turbo had long served as Porsche’s showcase of its ability to produce performance machines that came with few compromises to luxury and refinement and the 993 brought the air-cooled line to its apex.

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – REVISIT

The Turquoise Green Metallic 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with contrasting Marble Grey and Midnight Blue interior, which we featured last May, is back up for sale. Since it has now moved on to a different seller I thought perhaps we’d check back in on this very pretty 993. The original seller stated that this color combination was special ordered through Porsche Exclusive, but there’s no sign of that in the present ad. Whether it was special ordered or not, it remains a wonderful color and a unique find among the last of the air-cooled 911s.

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Here we have a 993 poised along the same trajectory as this Venetian Blue 3.2 Carrera, which we featured last month. Both come in very pretty, and rare, exterior colors and sit with very low mileage. Each also comes with a very high price tag. I have a particular affinity for the example here, a Turquoise Metallic 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe located in Arizona, because it’s a very similar color to my first car, of which I have many fond memories (and no it was not a 993). I’ve come across a lot of 993s with few miles and high price tags, and even seen some bid to very high prices, but this is one of the few I’ve seen that is a Carrera 2. Will even these base models begin to stretch into six-figure territory?

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

On Saturday we featured a very nice Black Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Wide Body and the car we see here is more or less the evolution of that machine. While the 993 Carrera 4S is not quite as rare as the Wide Body 964 it does possess a couple advantages for those purely in pursuit of their driving pleasure. First, and this is entirely subjective, I think it is better looking. I have always found the wider rear on the 993 to be a perfect complement to the curvier 993 body, whereas on the 964 I actually prefer the narrow body over the wide body. Your mileage may vary. The second advantage is less subjective. The 964 Wide Body was for appearances only, while the Carrera 4S returned to the full Turbo-look of the M491 package and added the suspension and braking of the Turbo. So you’re getting a little more than just the wider rear. From a collector standpoint the 993 seems a little more valuable these days and as the last of the air-cooled 911s it may remain so, but both should do well. The example we see here is a Grand Prix White 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, located in Arizona, with a nicely contrasted Cashmere/Black interior and 80,320 miles on it.

1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 Coupe

635794023986583977

After a change in nomenclature in 1994, the Mercedes-Benz S-class coupe would again see a model name change in 1997. Renamed the CL class, this would be the moniker for the large coupe up until this current model year, when it would once again be known as the S-class coupe. Who knows what the rationale behind these name changes might be, but it’s rather remarkable this big two-door has survived throughout the years, facing economic downturns and energy crunches alike. This 1996 S600 Coupe is not for the faint of heart when it comes to running costs, as the brawny 6.0 liter V12 will certainly eat its fair share of gas and oil, along with the additional parts as compared to its lesser V8 sibling. With less than 50,000 miles on the clock, this S600 Coupe for sale in New Jersey would be great for collectors and those looking to impress at the country club forecourt alike.
