1997 Saab 9000 Aero

If you look at my vehicle history prior to my current vehicle, everything has been German. However, after years of flying the flag for the Fatherland, I’ve found myself wanting just a bit more. Something different. For years I took Saab for granted but when they finally closed up shop a few years ago, I shed a tear. Saabs were both obscure and sensible, with sometimes a heavy helping of performance. Such is the case with this 1997 9000 Aero for sale in New Jersey. While I was a bit saddened to scroll through the ad and find out it was equipped with an automatic, it’s a rare instance that you see one of these Q-ships in such great nick. This car represents the final year for the Aero, a model that featured a color-keyed body kit and spoiler, heavily bolstered Recaro seating, sport suspension and special 16 inch alloys. This automatic equipped example keeps the standard turbocharger for an output of 200 bhp, while manual equipped Aeros had a larger turbo capable of producing 225 bhp.

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

As a general rule final model year cars always hold a particular cachet and command a premium over their predecessors. That isn’t mind-blowing news or anything, but what I suppose we can wonder is just how much of a premium makes sense. That is more or less where I am at with this car, a Guards Red over Cashmere Beige 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet located in New York with 28,822 miles on it. In a way I’m at a similar crossroads to my feelings on the two ultra-low-mileage and rare color 911s I’ve posted over the past weeks. They were otherwise standard Carreras and as such I wonder how high they may ever go – or at least their ceiling over the next decade. This one seems to be banking on the final model year designation, which of course in this case is compounded by it being the last air-cooled model as well, to reach its high asking price. There is no doubt that for those seeking the full open-top experience in an air-cooled 911 that an example like this one serves as a good place to start. It’s the most modern and refined air-cooled 911 available and the 993’s lines seem to work a little better with the Cabriolet shape than on some other 911s.

1997 Volkswagen Beetle

In the late 1990s, as Volkswagen introduced it’s New Beetle, few outside of dyed in the wool VW enthusiasts were aware that production of the original, air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle was still going on in Mexico. A few of these late model Mexican built Beetles made their way back to Europe. By then, these cars were a novelty more than anything else, outclassed as a mode of basic transport even by other models in the Volkswagen product portfolio. Still, there is something neat about seeing modern VW trim pieces in an otherwise vintage interior, similar to the 1967 Beetle from my childhood. 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S

It isn’t hard at all to see the appeal of the 993 and why values barely seem to have ever waned. That these were the last of the air-cooled 911s is well known and carries with it ton of cachet. But it is its aesthetic qualities that carry the day even more as they represent an easily identifiable evolution of the design from the 911’s debut in the mid-60s. That the design of the 996, which followed upon the 993, has been so derided has only served to further enhance the already stellar reputation of the 993 itself. It is almost as if there is a sense that the 911’s evolution ceased with the 993; the 996 is viewed as a separate species that has branched off from the original and its genetic traits, while enabling the model to survive in renewed form, are actually deemed less desirable. All of this comes together to build an icon. While all examples of the 993 are in high demand it is the wide-body designs that really force buyers to submit to temptation. Of all the air-cooled 911s the 993 wears the wider rear better than any other. Most of the others look good, but the 993 looks completed. The wider rear fills out its curves better than on previous models and it all comes together in a package that is both aggressive and beautiful. There really is a lot to love. The example we see here is a Zenith Blue Metallic 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S, located in Connecticut, with Blue leather interior and 50,500 miles on it.

1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S

For a car as rare as the 993 Turbo S we do seem to be coming across a decent number of them right now. The one we see here certainly qualifies as one of the more interesting color palettes and even at the insane prices we see for these it should attract a good deal of interest. Here we have a Cobalt Blue Metallic 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S, located in Washington, with Midnight Blue leather interior and yellow accents with 17,917 miles on it. The blue on blue look is something I have grown accustomed to seeing on the 911. I’m far less accustom to the yellow accents we see in this interior, which certainly make a bold statement and help break up an otherwise monochromatic appearance to the car as a whole. I’m not sure what sparked the choice of yellow – perhaps it is as simple as matching the brake calipers of the Turbo S – and I’m equally as unsure of what I think about it. Thankfully the use of yellow was fairly restrained. I have no reservations about the exterior color choice: Cobalt Blue simply is fantastic and here on a Turbo S it looks both aggressive and alluring. With 424 hp the Turbo S are fantastically quick cars that bring with them a high level of refinement and luxury. While perhaps lacking some of the insanity of the 964 Turbo S, especially the lightened 3.3 liter version, there is little to find at fault with the 993 and the overall shape is about as good as it gets. This is the final evolution of the air-cooled 911 design and when I look at that shape I quickly understand the disappointment felt by 911 enthusiasts upon the release of the 996.
