10K Friday: Seeing Quattro? 1994 S4 v. 2000 S4 v. 2004 S4

509

Last week I wrote up one of the nicest S4s I’ve seen in a while; and like death and taxes, immediately afterwards another popped up. Point to you, Internet Gods. It got me thinking a bit, though; prices of the three first generations are all falling into line with each other, with good examples of early cars rising, B5 generation static and affordable, and the B6 still falling slightly. It offers a unique chance to own one of three cars with the same name, same purpose, and same manufacturer but very different personalities. Today’s 10K Friday then is between the venerable C4 1994 S4, the beloved B5 2000 S4, and the silky smooth B6 S4. Let’s start where it all began with the 1994:

You are looking at an impressive piece of AWD German engineering that is advanced even by today’s standards. This is an original Audi S car with the 20-valve 5-cylinder turbocharged AAN born of Audi’s World Rally Championship heritage. It is increasingly rare to see this kind of S4 in this condition, color and low original mileage. I am a meticulous Audi enthusiast and have cared for the car accordingly.

Condition:
Mechanical – very good – No fluid leaks, maintenance is up to date, only synthetic oil (either Castrol GTX or Mobil 1) with BG MOA oil additive was used. The timing belt is up-to-date as conveyed to me by previous owner and good to go until 100k miles. I of course had my certified Audi mechanic inspect it anyway upon purchase and he confirmed the condition of the belt (good with no cracks/imperfections) corroborates this. November of last year I flushed all the fluids including brake fluid, transmission fluid and coolant (Audi red). The clutch is original to my knowledge, is tight and in great shape. I only ran Shell, Conoco or Diamond Shamrock premium gasoline.

Notable mechanical repairs under my ownership include: stainless steel brake lines installed, valve cover gasket replaced, starter replaced, new brakes and rotors two months ago, and new power radio antenna. NOTE: Pre-purchase mechanical inspections at local and reputable Audi shops are welcomed at the expense of the interested party provided my schedule will allow it and it isn’t too much of an inconvenience. These must be completed prior to the close of the auction sale.

Interior – Immaculate. No rips, tears, odors or stains. The driver’s floor mat is somewhat worn.

Body – very good condition. No dents or door dings that I am aware of, nor other imperfections. I wash it, wax it and condition the interior leather on a monthly basis if not more frequently.

Paint – Freshly waxed it looks brand new.

Upgrades – I’ve upgraded the brake lines, the wheels to the B5 S4 Avus 17″ wheels (perfect shape), had an aftermarket power antenna installed (black instead of silver) and the balance of the car is OEM.

Features: You get an AWD platform that excels in all weather conditions, a legendary and very reliable power plant in the 20-valve turbo, 5-speed manual transmission, wrapped in a gorgeous body and it comes with every option Audi could dream of for that year. It doesn’t get much better.

History: This is an original Colorado car. The first owner bought it here, retired eventually and liked the car so much he took it to Hawaii with him. After a period of time there, he sold it. I believe I bought it from the second owner there in Hawaii and had it shipped back to Colorado, making me the third owner. I am selling it because I am saving up for a home purchase. This car comes with a clean Colorado title and clean Carfax available upon request. NOTE: This is my daily driver at present and mileage will go up accordingly.

Payment: This sale is an auction-style sale. To retain the vehicle, the winning bidder must provide a non-refundable $500 deposit via Paypal within 24 hours of the conclusion of the auction. The balance of the funds must be paid to me through certified check drawn off a verifiable bank or cash when the agent, shipper or buyer arrives to pick up the vehicle and title no later than one week after the close of the auction sale.

Shipping: I will help out with this as much as is reasonably possible, but the buyer is responsible for all shipping arrangements.

Finally, please feel free to ask me any questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability in as timely a manner as possible. Thank you and good luck!

The “Ur-S”s are loved by there owners and desired by many in and out of the Audi crowd. Although they were really an evolution of the 200, they were a revelation in the all-weather high-performance sedan and wagon category. The seller notes that the AAN is legendary, and these cars are pretty bulletproof through 300,000 plus miles. As we’ve mentioned many times, these cars hit the bottom of the market a few years ago and it has become hard to find clean examples. This particular model is one of the lower mileage examples that has come up for sale recently, and one of the very few that remains nearly stock. I have to admit that Tornado Red isn’t my favorite color on the big-body Audis, and the Avus alloys never seem quite right to me on this generation. Source a set of early D2 18″ Avus wheels (that never came to the U.S. – think the Ronin car), the 17” Boleros I mentioned in the last post, or properly the original 16×8 light and strong Fuchs to correct that problem. With the right wheels, I could probably live with the color. The maintenance and history seem good, so that just leaves the price – a little high to me, but as we’ve stated before – go find another. Maybe the C4 isn’t your thing, and you like the slick packaging of the car that replaced it – the B5 S4:

Check out this older Audi S4 manual transmission car. Overall for a 14 year old car it’s in good shape. An older couple owned the car. The exterior is in decent shape and the same with the interior. This car because of age and mileage is being sold as-is no warranty expressed of implied. This car has not been through our shop and we recommend an independent inspection.

509

There’s a lot to like here; the color combination, while not the most popular on the B5, looks sharp and fits the car’s profile well. I like the lighter interior to the often-specified black. I’m not a fan of the wheels, though that could be sorted with a quick call to the owner of the above 94. The 2.7 twin-turbo V6 has proven to be pretty reliable through high miles too; I have a friend with a highly modified 2000 that has just crested 300,000 miles with no sign of slowing down. That motor is also nearly as tunable as the AAN, with many pushing 400 plus horsepower. There are drawbacks; the more electronically dependent quattro system in the B5 doesn’t handle high power upgrades or snow quite as well as the more simple earlier C4 and turbo replacement is just about a guarantee on these cars as they get older; that necessitates pulling the motor and is an expensive job. Additionally, the B cars with their 4 link suspension often have a fair share of squeaks and rattles, but it’s nothing that any older German car wouldn’t experience. You could argue, then, that if the original car wasn’t your bag, maybe you should get the newest one you can on a budget – enter the B6 2004 V8 S4:

Before you start in on me, I get that it’s an auto, but these are on the downward swing still and the tiptronic models are in general worth a bit less, so they fall into the 10K category a little more easily. The tip S4s with the V8 don’t have the lag issues the B5 experienced because of the nature of the V8 versus the blown V6 unit, so while it’s not for everyone the tiptronic isn’t as bad for a daily driver as you might think. I love the white on these S4s; they stand out and look properly German and clean. As I mentioned before I’m not as big a fan of the black interiors, though. Like the B5, the B6 has some known engine gremlins that will result in the mill being pulled out, but repairs between the two seem to be about the same cost if not slightly less on the V8.

If it were my money, I think I’d find it hard to pass up the B5. While that C4 is very nice and 9.9 times out of 10 I’d choose the earlier car, like the GTis I wrote up yesterday if I were paying top dollar for a particular model I think I’d hold out for a color I’d prefer as they do still pop up, albeit infrequently. The B5 seems to be the deal of the group; miles, color combo, and platform are right for a daily driver that you can have a lot of fun in on a budget, or modify into your dream RS model. Which would you prefer?

10K Friday: A8L v. 745i v. S500

509

Today on 10K Friday we’re going to look at how much luxury you can buy for around $10,000. Unlike last week’s look at two sport sedans, today’s cars are more focused at isolating their drivers from the proletariat. It’s hard for some people to believe that on a Kia hatchback budget you can pick up a top-of-the-line German luxury car. But if you’re a fan of the bigger German cars, it should be no surprise that at around 10 years old, the value on them falls; but it’s a delicate balance between buying one that’s new enough that it won’t be a heap and buying one old enough that you can afford on a budget. Today we’re going to look at one from each marque; a 2004 Audi A8L, a 2004 BMW 745i, and a 2004 Mercedes-Benz S500 4Matic. We’ll start with the Audi EDIT: it appears the original A8 sold; I have updated the links to a similar 2005 with slightly more miles:

Engine: 4.2 liter V8

2004 AUDI A8L AWD Quattro. Beautiful Sparkling green color with tan leather interior. Nice and Sharp Looking loaded with most of the options. Texas Owner. Even with slightly high miles, it runs and drives awesome. Non Smoker. Equipped with Navigation, Heated Seats, Xenon Lights. Engine sounds great and transmission shift swiftly. I personally drove it for over 50 miles and checked the A/C, alignment, and Suspension. NO flood, water. Clean Texas Title with no lien.

I have to say, I really like the light mint green, and that you can get into a D3 for under 10K. The interior on these cars is beautiful and well laid out; on the outside, while the D3 isn’t as pretty to me as the D2 was, it’s still quite a handsome car. I always felt the taillights were too large on this model, but like that this car does have acres of rear leg room. I haven’t heard of D3s suffering the same transmission issues that saddled D2s, and with just over 100,000 miles, there should be plenty of life in this mill. The front bumper shows signs of some curb contact and in typical fashion the dealer has failed to replace a few little things that would dress the car up ($10 centercap, anyone?), but the one item that would concern me is the trunk lid seems out of alignment; these mostly-aluminum A8s need special repairs if they’ve contacted something hard. If the thought of a higher mile Audi scares you too much, perhaps the BMW is for you:

The E65 won’t go down in many people’s books as a great looking car, and few would argue that it’s really good looking; but, it is stately and it’s hard to argue with the combination of a sport and luxury. This particular car was pretty well optioned with the sport package, cold weather package, luxury package, park distance control, and upgraded wheels. Kalahari Beige looks quite nice without dating the car too much. The interior is less well laid out than the Audi but still pretty trick and full of gadgets you can (and will need to) play with all day. Like the Audi, the drivetrains in these cars were pretty tried and true, so with normal maintenance one shouldn’t expect too many issues immediately. Bangle-era BMWs not your thing? Well, how about a Mercedes-Benz S500 4Matic:

THIS MERCEDES RUNS,DRIVES AND BRAKES AS IT SHOULD.THIS CAR WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND WAS CLAIMED TO BE TOTALED AND THE PREVIOUS CUSTOMER LIKED IT SO MUCH PURCHASED IT BACK FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND HAD IT FIXED AS EVIDENT ON THE AUTOCHECK REPORT.THIS CAR DOES HAVE A SALVAGE TITLE AND IS BEING REPRESENTED THAT WAY….THIS CAR IS BEING SOLD AS-IS NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED.THIS CAR HAS NOT BEEN THRU OUR SHOP AND WE RECOMMEND HAVING IT CHECKED OUT BY AND OUTSIDE GARAGE…..

Although this S-Class is the cheapest car here and sports the largest motor, there are items that give me pause; chief among which is the salvage title. However, repair costs on these cars “by the book” are sometimes so high, it’s not unusual to see totaled cars without tremendous damage. Provided it checks out, I’m not sure the title would scare me away as I don’t think this is a long term keeper anyway. The mileage is also higher than the other two, and like the E65, the W220 isn’t high on the “favorites” list of many enthusiasts. Despite this, they’re pretty solid cars that will quietly whisk you away from your daily grind.

Were it my money, hands down it would be the Audi. More power and lower weight than the Mercedes, less technologically dependent than the BMW, and better looking than both, to me that’s the winner of the group. Which one would you like to show off in?

V8 Week: 2007 Audi RS4

When we at GCFSB.com wanted to do another theme week, we really wanted to cross marques, and what better way than with a engine layout that is used pretty universally? Audi started it’s love affair with the V8 engine back in 1988-1989 with the release of the then-revolutionary V8 quattro. Boasting reasonable performance, high-class luxury, and go-anywhere in anything quattro all-wheel drive, the V8 quattro would become a cult-classic for Audi fans. Since then Audi’s V8 engine has increased slightly in displacement and sprouted more valves, but the heart of these cars has most been assisted by modern electronics that allow cars like the RS4 to pump out an incredible 420 horsepower. Though they more recently have backed away from V8 engines in an effort to gain fuel economy, Audi’s legendary RS4 V8 was shouty and sonorous at the same time, producing notes that few other engines can on the way up the tachometer. And while there are few RS4s who’s exterior match the shoutiness of the engine, today’s example of a Sprint Blue RS4 is shouty for all the right reasons:

Blue has been the choice for fast Audis since the launch of the legendary RS2. Sure, that blue has changed from RS Blue to Nogaro, and then again to Sprint Blue on the B7s, but the idea remains the same. Like a red Porsche, pulling up anywhere in one of these blue Audis tells the world you mean business, but in a mostly polite way. The RS4 is an incredible performer with reasonable practicality as a daily driver, but is certainly special enough to stand out in the crowd. In my opinion, too many of these cars were specified in silver, grey or black – to me, they just look better in loud colors. The only one I have seen that I desire more than this car is the one special order Viper Green RS4; but day to day, this would do nicely, thank you very much.

The best known issue with the RS4 is carbon buildup, and worryingly there is no mention of this car being serviced, though most of the RS4 community seems to feel that service price is less of a big deal than the community that doesn’t own them. Either way, plan on getting it corrected in the future. It’s nice to see the original alloys which seemed to disappear quickly from many; here’s a hint – we’ll want them in the future, so if you buy this car please keep them! Otherwise the car seems to be in great shape as it should for the quite reasonable mileage that’s been put onto it. Pricing seems pretty much spot on the middle of the market, and as the blue seems to command a premium over some of the other colors I’d say in the higher 30s this car is pretty well bought.

Double Take: A Duo of Audi S6 quattros

Like the last “Double Take” I did on two Passat W8 Variants, today’s double feature is two powerful eight cylinder all-wheel drive wagons from the Volkswagen Audi Group – this time, it’s two S6 quattro Avants. Like the W8, these S6s were pricey when new but have maintained a cult following that loves them. Rare to see anywhere you go, they offer lots of speed from their 340hp V8s, lots of comfort from their luxurious interiors, all-weather capability and a massive load capacity. Today we’ll start by looking at an Atlas Grey 2003 and finish with a Pearlesant White 2002:

509

Well, there you go. Two very complicated, very expensive to maintain cars, both with zero records offered in the ad print. These cars are notoriously tough on the wallet, but like the W8s offer a unique combination of speed and practicality that few others can. I would guess that you’re more likely to find some records with the one-owner Pearlesant car, but the dealer has presented the lower-mile Atlas Grey car much better. Indeed, the 03 shows little wear to its light colored leather; certainly less than the 02 shows. That said, the entry price on the 03 seems well out of line with the market. I reviewed a S6 Avant last month that had slightly more mileage, incorrect wheels but some tasteful modifcations, but that car has still failed to sell despite now being priced $6,000 less. I would say the Atlas Grey car should fetch $10,000 – $12,000, and the Pearlesant White car should stay between $8,000 and $10,000. But as many comments have noted, the entry price may just be the tip of the iceberg, so if you’re serious about getting into one of these cars, get a thorough pre purchase inspection.

2008 Audi R8

Supercars are not the most profitable of cars for a manufacturer, but can be a beneficial piece of promotion for a brand. Case in point, the Audi R8. Years after plummeting sales and a near collapse of market share in the US, Audi came back strong in the mid 1990s to unleash a new range of cars and nomenclature, clawing its way to the top of the sales charts to where it sits today. Along the way, Audi acquired Lamborghini in 1998, paving the way for the house of Quattro to explore a new vehicle niche. Built on the same platform as the Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8 debuted in 2006 to much acclaim, with critics heaping praise on it, to the point where some describe it as the best sports car ever made.

Consequently, demand (and prices) still stay strong, putting this car out of reach for the great majority of enthusiasts. This R8 for sale in Alabama, however, is priced rather attractively and has under 30,000 miles.

The soul of the R8 4.2 FSI quattro® is the adrenaline inducing 430 hp 4.2 FSI V8 engine. Like the 5.2, the V8 is also displayed under a transparent panel, producing 316 lb-ft of torque and rocketing from to 60 mph in only 4.4 seconds to a top track speed of 187 mph. As part of a race-bred mid-engine design that contributes to superb handling dynamics, the 4.2 V8 features race winning technology such as FSI direct injection, sodium-cooled exhaust valves and is setup for a high-revving 8250 rpm.

As a true supercar the R8 not only offers blistering speed but awe-inspiring handling. Featuring the legendary quattro® all-wheel drive system, the R8 inspires driver confidence, giving you traction when you need it, where you need it, regardless of road conditions. To accommodate the extreme performance of the R8, quattro® utilizes a continuously variable torque distribution, dynamically adjusting power to the wheels with the best traction. With a significant 85% rear torque bias and up to 30% available for the front wheels as needed, this highly specialized quattro® system provides the R8 with a balanced driving experience unlike any car on the road.

Audi Fuel Stratified Injection, or FSI®, offers the benefits of increased performance and fuel efficiency. FSI direct injection delivers a precise amount of fuel directly into the engine cylinders as opposed to the engine intake runners. This advanced process helps ensure a more complete combustion, thereby diminishing waste and increasing power. Additionally, the specially designed piston heads compress the fuel-air mixture in a spiraling motion, creating the most efficient combustion possible. Making the most of these technologies allows for greater efficiency in the combustion process.

Jet Blue is one of my favorite R8 colors, and this one is made even more enticing for me in that it has the six-speed manual gearbox. It’s hard to find a good R8 under $90,000 these days, as they are a bit of a living legend when it comes to the sports car world. The 4.2 liter V8 is such a good engine that I doubt I’d go for a V10 (supposing I would ever be in the market for such an awesome car). Still, the world hasn’t seen such a usable sports car since the Acura NSX. With the added benefit of four-wheel drive, it’s conceivable to use these cars year round. If I had the means, I certainly would.

2002 Audi S6

A wolf in sheeps clothing, the 2002 Audi S6 looks like your every day family hauler. A closer look reveals wider fenders, aero lower door blades, brushed aluminum treatments and larger Avus wheels. Now there’s no mistaking what this car truly is, a hot rod.

One of the last years for S6 Avants, the C5 was the highest evolution of the breed. With more output from the 4.2L V8 (340 bhp and 310 lb/ft) along with the aesthetic upgrades, the S6 went on a diet. With all aluminum suspension, fenders and hood, the S6 stays just a touch heavier than the standard V6 A6 Avant. The S6 could make the run to 60 in 6.5 seconds. No small feat for a car weighing 2 tons.

All the performance certainly comes at a cost. The S6’s achilles heel is the 5-speed tiptronic slushbox, notorious for being one of the worst gearboxes Audi ever coupled to its 4.2. The shifting is vague at best and these gearboxes tend to have valve body issues. This grey over ecru S6 for sale in New Hampshire has the potential to be a great daily driver…with a kick.

I have a beautiful 2002 Audi S6 for sale with 161,000 miles on it. This is a rare car and it is in excellent condition. It looks fantastic, drives fantastic and is a reliable and fun alternative to a minivan! Comes with original wheels with all-season tires plus a set of nearly new snow tires mounted on alloy wheels.

Differences between the A6 and the S6, the S6 has:
4.2 V8 with 340 HP that sings to 7,200 RPM
Active motor mounts
Aluminum sub frame, suspension uprights, hood, and front fenders
Larger brakes
Flared fenders
255/40/17 tires are stock (and wider tires will fit)
This car has the Sport interior with more bolstered seats, alcantara seat insers and alcantara headliner

Other features:
Heated front and rear seats, both front fully power adjustable
Dual zone climate control
Symphony stereo with subwoofer and in-dash six disc changer
Power moonroof
Heated mirrors and washers
4-channel ABS with defeatable traction and stability control
Tiptronic auto with sport mode and manual shift mode
Auto dimming mirrors with integrated compass

What this car needs:
Drivers door shuts when you close it normally, but if you slam it shut, it bounces open one notch (not all the way open)
Drivers side mirror is leaking the dimming fluid
Center console cupholder does not work (but the dash cupholder works)
The front paint finish worn from dust and rocks from highway driving
The summer tires are mostly worn and will need replacement soon.

That’s it. This car will pass inspection and runs and drives beautifully and looks really nice. It needs nothing other than those minor items mentioned above. I’ve maintained and repaired items on this car since I purchased it. Mobile 1 synthetic only. I also have service records from the previous owner that detail previous work.

This S6 offers a reasonable deal for anyone in the market for a grocery getter that gets down to business. The values of these cars with 161K miles is around $9000 on the high side. This car seems to be well kept, but as with any 10 year old car, warrants a good looking over. With a bit of negotiating, this car would be well bought around $8,000.

2001 Audi S8

The S8 has been Audi’s flagship for nearly a decade and a half, offering top notch luxury combined with 335 bhp and performance upgrades. The S8 is the gentleman’s sports car. This low mileage fixer upper for sale in Edison, New Jersey is a good opportunity to get in to a clean S8, and satisfy your need to tinker (if you have one).

Check out this 2001 Audi S8 with only 50,712 miles! Please be advised that this car does have the check engine light on and have several codes stored including O2 sensor, ABS unit, etc. The customer stated that the cowling backed up with water and leaked in the car (yes, this was a pretty common issue with this model if not cleaned properly). This car is being sold as a fixer upper needing repairs and show be towed off the premises. Because of the age, this car is being sold as-is no warranty expressed or implied. This is the perfect car for a technician to purchase and fix up and drive for years to come. Again, the body and interior are very clean. Check out the pictures! These S8s are getting very hard to find and even more so with very low miles like this one!

As an Audi owner I can say that the repairs being advertised in this ad are easily managable by the average garage mechanic.  Audis of this generation were still relatively easy to repair and parts will be readily available, either second hand, or in the aftermarket. The issue with the cowl, for example, is common on all Audi models and is remedied with a shop vac, a hammer, and a 12″ rachet extension.

In going to look at this car I would recommend bringing a VAG com to scan the codes to see exactly what they are and do your homework. With only 50K miles and at a price of $12,661, there is still a bit of haggling to do. If the repairs on this car are extensive, the price of $9K is more realistic. Depending on what the car needs, with a bit of money and good old fashoined elbow grease will get you in to an amazingly clean luxury sedan.
