Earlier this week I looked at a 1972 Mercedes-Benz 600, one of the most legendary sedans of all time. Today is another 1972 Mercedes-Benz sedan, although this one is a little easier on the wallet both in purchase price and cost of upkeep. This 280SE 4.5 for sale in Santa Monica, California is not only a clean example but also sports a rare color in Phantom Gray.

When I was about my son’s age (he’s just turned 5, amazingly), my father took me to the Porsche dealership. Rows of new arrivals from Zuffenhausen lined up, a cornucopia of Easter egg-colored speed machines. In 1983, the low, organic, flowing shapes of the 911 and 944 stood in vast contrast to the bulk of three-box designs that proliferated the marketplace. But there was one shape that really stuck out to me – the 928.

In 1983, Porsche hadn’t yet abandoned its hope that the 928 would ascend to the top of the Porsche model lineup, and because of this I don’t remember seeing any 928s outside. Where I did see them was inside the showroom, where I distinctly remember one residing. My father was taken by the 911 (still is, to this day), and perhaps it was a father-versus-son stereotypical response, but the air-cooled model looked old and antiquated. The 928 was, both literally and figuratively, the antithesis of the 911. Water-cooled, front-engined, Grand Touring. It looked like a spaceship both inside and out. Clearly, this was the future I was witnessing.

Yet the 928, for all its press and relative market success, never caught completely on. It was never able to wrest the crown from the 911 as the signature model for Porsche. But what is perhaps most surprising to me is that it is one of the few cars that today, over forty years gone from its design phase, that unlike basically every other car model produced in the 1970s and 1980s, it still looks futuristic today. Okay, admittedly, the plastics have aged, tiny wheels with big, comfy side walls are no longer the norm and flush-fitted windows, lights, locks and antenna would clean the design up significantly. But compare this design to a few contemporaries, for a moment – the 1976 Chrysler New Yorker, the Toyota Cressida, or the Fiat 128.

I’ve been on a little bit of a green kick as well as a featuring a few C107s of late. So why not combine the two and feature an outstanding 450SLC that is absolutely covered in the color green? This 1980 up for sale in Portugal has a nice lighter shade of green in Silver Green Metallic on the outside, but it’s what is inside that really blows you away.

About a month again I looked at a 1980 280SLC which I found intriguing for two reasons: the relatively low cost and its rare color. Today’s 1974 450SLC for sale in Virginia is a car along those same lines. It is presented in a nice color and, surprisingly, at an even lower cost. It has its flaws but that is probably to be expected for a Mercedes as cheap as this one is. Like I mentioned before, the C107 surely isn’t my favorite Mercedes ever, but deals like this one have me softening my stance on them.

Keeping with the theme of Mercedes-Benz in a color I rarely see, I present to you a 300SEL 4.5 in the same color as the bonkers SL65 AMG RENNtech — yellow. I must admit I’ve never seen a W108 or W109 in yellow so I was a excited to come across this one for sale in Ohio, even though I don’t particularly love yellow. Much to my dismay, this 300SEL has probably seen its last ride.

As my family moves on to its ninth Mercedes-Benz, I was reminded the other day of my grandfather’s 1972 280SE. This was a rather unusual car for the day in Philadelphia, but reflected a bit of his taste as a diplomat for the Portuguese government. These were stately cars that compromised little. I’ve always preferred the look of the W108/W109 as opposed to the befinned W111 that preceded it and this late model 280SE 4.5 is no different. The W108 would only be sold in the US market for 1973, as the rest of the world had already moved on to the W116 S-class. For sale in New York, this isn’t the most perfect W108, but it certainly holds a lot of promise.

The 1971 Mercedes–Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG is one of my favorite cars ever. The ‘Red Pig’ entered 1971 24-hour race at Spa as the over-weight underdog. To everyone’s surprise, it finished 1st in it’s class and second overall thanks to the madmen at AMG who took the already impressive M100 engine and pushed it to 428 horsepower and 448 lb-ft. This example for sale in California isn’t the famous Rote Sau, but it is a very nice tribute that will have you yelling ”Sooie!”

There’s a strange part of me that loves the idea of turning up to the track in something no one is expecting to see turn fast laps. It’s part of what drove me to continuously develop my Audi GT into a track car, and most of what I love about racers like the Audi V8 quattro and 850 Estate Super Touring. But certainly, when it comes to Porsches everyone expects them to appear on the circuit, right? Well, in the case of the 928, it’s somewhat rare to see them hit the track. Big, heavy and complicated grand tourers, they’re more at home hitting top speed on the Frankfurt-Darmstadt Autobahn then slithering through La Source. Yet some, including Porsche themselves, took the big GT racing – from Le Mans to Daytona, the 928 saw competitive action around the globe even if it never was quite as celebrated as its rear engine brethren. Today it’s just as rare to find a track prepared 928 for sale, but an early example has surfaced on eBay:

Family life – it’s a mixed blessing. I could never have imagined the unintended consequences expanding my family by 50%; in terms of space consumed, physics and logic told me that there was no way that the amount of space required with a small child would increase any more than…say, 50%. Yet, the reality of adding to my family is that the amount of space required for even what seems like the most miniscule trip increases disproportionately to the size of the package that arrives. Babies are a bit like those magic sponges in a capsule I got when I was a kid; once they hit air, they expand to 200-300% the size they were. So, long story short, when you have a family you likely need more space.

On the surface, the themes were very similar; two movies staring action superstars playing above-the-law criminals with an amazing ability to extricate themselves from seemingly impossible conditions against improbable odds driving large, fast executive cars. Despite this, the movies Ronin and The Transporter couldn’t be more different. I watched the former on the edge of my seat, captivated by the mystery, floored by the incredibly filmed stunt scenes, the attention to reality and detail, and the staggeringly awesome lineup of cars. The latter I struggled to get through at all; I managed to make it about half way through before giving up. To this day, I still haven’t seen the ending of the first movie, and nothing more than trailers of the second. Is there a third? I’m sorry, I’m sure it made a gazillion dollars in the box office but frankly when I watched the clip of the Audi A8L W12 corkscrewing through the air to miraculously remove a bomb from the bottom of the car on a perfectly placed scrap-metal magnet hanging in mid-air I lost all interest. I can suspend my belief for a movie like Ronin because there was an air of reality to it; the characters were flawed and mortal. Sure, there were problems with the plot and even some of the stunts – I mean, they don’t show Jean Reno standing in line at the DMV to register the 450SEL 6.9, for example. But in terms of reality, it was on this planet at least, while The Transporter seemed to be set in some alternate Japanese-live-action-anime reality I’m not sure I want to understand. Nevertheless, the central plot to both is about cars and driving (at least a bit), and today you can purchase just about all of the cars featured in these films for around $10,000 – so which would you have?…

This car is a bit atypical of most of the cars I feature here at GCFSB. I typically focus on the lighter, smaller, sportier cars that attract my attention, which predominantly end up being Porsches. Those are the cars I love, but I’ve always loved a big Merc as well, especially those of the ’70s. Something about their styling really grabs me. There is a certain timeless charm found in their contours and whenever I think of having a big posh car to soak up road imperfections these are almost always the sort of cars that come to mind.

Here we have a 1973 280SEL 4.5 located in California. As one of the last of the W108 generation it came with a 4.5 liter V8 producing 225 hp that allowed for capable performance figures for cars of this size.

While silver isn’t the most exciting color on a car, I love the way the 280SEL looks in this color. The contrast of the orange front indicators with the understated paint color looks lovely and the silver paint provides a nice contrast to a fantastic looking cognac interior.…

Growing up, I was exposed early on to the merits of Mercedes-Benzes. There’s been quite a few of them to pass through my family, with one still hanging around to this day. There’s something instantly familiar about the vintage models. From the way their doors shut with a solid thunk to the way they seem to smooth out the road ahead, seamlessly combining comfortable cruising with sure-footed handling. One of my favorite vintage Mercedes sedans is the late model W108/W109. The forerunner to the S class, these cars gained a new lease on life towards the end of their production run with the addition of the 4.5 liter V8 engine.

I’ve never seen one of these sedans painted in this eye-popping color before. It’s an uncommon choice and one that won’t be to everyone’s taste. But this final year 280SEL 4.5 is an original car, save for a new interior and some exterior touch ups along the way.

Before you is a stunning 1973 Mercedes Benz 280SEL in 624 Yellow with Dark Brown Leather Interior. This 280SEL was purchased new at Mark Motors, Inc., Illinois in 1973. The original owner then moved to Montecito, California and the car was transported by truck. I purchased this car 10 years ago from the original owner, an elderly lady, and sold it locally (Ventura, CA) to another mature woman. I purchased the car back recently. This 280SEL is truly unique because of its color. In person, it’s magnificent. I’ve never seen another like it. When you drive up in this vehicle, people know that you’ve arrived.

The front and back seats have been reupholstered in dark brown leather.

There’s been a surprising lack of W108/W109 S class Mercedes-Benzes on this site lately, so I decided to search for a clean, affordable example. The car we see here, a short wheelbase W108 is an interesting mix of the classic and modern. Classic in the vehicle’s appearance and modern in what’s under the hood. The 4.5 signified the arrival of the new M117 SOHC V8 that would go on to power a generation of S and SL models. Offered only in the USA, as opposed the 3.5 liter, M116 version.

While prices of the coupes and cabriolets have skyrocketed, sedans have stayed reasonable. Clean, unmolested examples are plentiful for under $15,000. Here is a nice one located up in Massachusetts:

The 280 is a magnificent looking car. This example of the 280 SE is in very good condition having been cared for over the years. The big 4.5 Liter V8 engine has hardly seen much action having run an average 2-3K miles per year since being put into service. This car with 78,000 original miles will put a smile on your face as soon as you sit in it. Runs perfectly, needs some minor cosmetic fixes and the AC needs to be charged or converted.

If I had the space, I’d love to have one of these old S classes in my stable. I remember being at a Mercedes-Benz club meet at MB Headquarters in New Jersey and a guy from Maine had an impeccable 1967 250S sedan with a four speed manual on the floor in a stunning non-metallic gray with red interior. I would have given anything just to take it out for a test drive. It brings back memories of my grandfather’s 1971 280SE and my dad’s 1967 230S fintail.…
