The 996 GT3 remains one of my favorite Porsches. I like any GT3 – I mean, how could you not? – but the 996 has always held precedence for me as the first GT3 Porsche produced. I think I also tend to particularly like it because the GT3 and GT3 RS are the two 996 models where I don’t mind the appearance. With its revised lines I actually think the 996 GT3 is a good looking machine, while I remain bothered by the standard 996 offerings.

Over the past year I’ve looked at these GT3s a lot. I’ve long thought they were a nice value and with the values of our perennial performance-value favorite, the 996TT, on the rise the GT3 suddenly started to make even more sense. I think those days are (slowly) coming to an end. Asking prices for the GT3 appear to be steadily rising. I guess the cat is out of the bag and buyers are recognizing the value these represent. They’re also one of the few 996 models where collectors are likely to take notice.

Value still exists though so long as we allow for higher mileage. There aren’t a ton of higher mileage GT3s out there so at the moment opportunities are scarce, but they do exist. Like this one: a Speed Yellow 2004 Porsche 911 GT3, located in Dallas, with 86,410 miles on it.

Litmus Test: Granite Green Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

We sometimes can be a bit hard on cars with very low mileage. Why buy any car – especially a performance car – to park it in a garage and treat it like a museum piece? Or some ornamental furniture? It seems wasteful. This 911 has suffered from no such stagnation. It has almost 250K miles on it. While that’s still not a ton of miles per year, it is a good bit more than most 911s we see. It’s been enjoyed. It has stories; drives bringing its owners excitement, and perhaps even some heartache whenever it was sold. It’s also damn good looking and sitting mostly in its original specification of Granite Green Metallic over a Grey-Green interior. All of this beauty is on auction with no reserve. We really can’t ask for too much more with any 911.

1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – M491

If you’ve been searching for a Turbolook (M491) Carrera Coupe, then take note. These have begun to come around for sale so rarely that we cannot pass them by regardless of condition. Thankfully this one appears to be in nice shape. This isn’t one of the extremely rare G50-equipped Coupes, but even the earlier models are uncommon enough and desirable enough that I’d expect a lot of interest.

For those unfamiliar, the M491 package gave buyers the option of fitting the 930 rear, suspension, braking, and front and rear spoilers to their standard 3.2 Carrera. Basically you got a 911 Turbo minus the engine. Hence the Turbolook moniker. During its early years on offer the 930 wasn’t available in the US market so the M491 was the closest you could get. Better handling, improved braking, and arguably better looks, but with a less high strung engine. You can see why these have remained very desirable still today.

Double Take: 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS – Black or White?

This will be a study of complete contrasts. Light and dark. Two examples of the 997 GT3 RS that look equally stunning, but achieve that through entirely different means. One is paint to sample, the other a standard color. Both are somewhat rarely seen in this form, though in the case of the white RS it is more the lack of adornment that produces that rarity.

I had seen this paint-to-sample Black GT3 RS previously and knew I would want to take a closer look. Then I forgot about it. When I came back around to it a Carrara White GT3 RS had also come up for sale. White and Black: neither color is much outside the norm for most cars, but the GT3 RS is not like most cars. Black even was a paint-to-sample option, which almost beggars belief. Let’s take a look at that peculiarly rare black example first:

2016 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Rennsport Reunion Edition

For reasons I can’t quite put my finger on I’m quite attracted to Porsche’s Rennsport Reunion 911. While not really in the sort of colors I tend to prefer there is something great about the overall package and when I see one I definitely take notice. The Rennsport Reunion Edition served to commemorate the fifth Rennsport Reunion held at Laguna Seca Raceway in September 2015. It is a showcase of Porsche racecars from throughout its history.

We are sometimes hard on Porsche for its constant commemorative and special edition 911s. In most cases they just seem like another way to move some cars and in truth that’s probably the primary intent. But I will say this, in more recent years these special editions have been produced in very limited numbers. If you’re going to make something special, then you might as well go all out. The Rennsport Reunion Edition 911 is no different: only 25 were made. If you want one opportunities can be fleeting.
