1994 Porsche 928GTS – REVISIT

$_4 (1)

The 1994 Porsche 928GTS that Andy from flüssig magazine featured back in January is back up for sale, with a Buy It Now of $75,000. The 928GTS is the ultimate expression of Porsche’s long lived GT car, and with the 5-speed manual gearbox it makes it all the more desirable as a collector vehicle.

1979 Porsche 928

It’s pretty rare these days to come across a virtually pristine early Porsche 928. Why most 928s, especially the early cars, are in such disrepair is somewhat of a mystery. It seems that there is a comparative abundance of nice late ‘70s 930s and other 911 derivations. I think that part of the reason lies with the fact that 928 values have remained so low for such a prolonged period of time that owners couldn’t financially justify the costs associated with maintaining them. Well, this example (along with a few other early cars that have sold recently) gives me hope that early 928s are finally starting to get some of the recognition they deserve. After all, it was a very significant Porsche at a very interesting and somewhat tumultuous time for the company. Anyhow, I digress and will segue into a discussion about this particular car for sale in The Netherlands.

This car is one of the nicest early 928’s that I’ve ever seen come up for sale. It is said to have only 13,800 kilometers (around 8,500 miles) and to be a one-owner car. The color combo is beautiful. The Gran Prix white exterior compliments the 928 very well, and goes well with the very striking orange and black interior. It is very well optioned for an early 928, and is equipped with an automatic transmission, automatic seats, and a sunroof. For those who aren’t well familiar with the early cars, most didn’t have sunroofs and unlike later 928’s, most came with manual transmissions.

1993 Porsche 928GTS

Here is a beautiful 1993 928 GTS. As you know, mint GTS’s fetch a pretty penny on the rare occasion that they come up for sale. In fact, I’d say that this is certainly the most pristine example to come up for sale publicly this year in the United States (that Midnight Blue ’95 5-speed in Germany that we featured about a month ago would be the nicest worldwide).

This particular example comes with a somewhat monochrome color combination of Polar Silver Metallic over Classic Grey leather. Breaking up the monotony is the eye catching red piping and rootwood shift lever, which were extremely rare options on GTS’s. Additional rare options featured on this GTS include Porsche crests in the headrests and a leather shift boot. It’s hard to tell if the luggage cover is also leather.

A quick search on the 928 Registry indicates that this car was last for sale at Gaudin Porsche in Las Vegas in 2002 when it had around 16K miles. According to the Carfax, it has lived in Florida, Nevada, and has been in Pennsylvania since the 2002 sale. I spoke to a very nice salesman at Marshall Goldman who informed me that the asking price is $89,900. Although that price does set (I believe) a new ceiling for automatic 1993 GTS’s, I’d say that this car is certainly worthy of it.

1993 Porsche 928GTS – REVISIT

Featured on eBay this week is this beautiful 1993 Porsche 928 GTS. We’ve seen this car before, as Paul featured it last October. As you probably know, the 928 GTS has seen steady value increases over the past few years, with 5-speeds commanding sizeable premiums. In addition to being a rare 5-speed GTS, this car is the only GTS in the United States painted in Wimbledon Green. The color is quite attractive on this GTS, which sports a clean rubstrip delete body. The Wimbledon Green exterior is paired with an equally unique Olive Green leather interior complete with Matador Red piping on the seats and floor mats. According to the 928 Registry, this is one of 47 5-speeds made for the U.S. market in 1993, and had an original sticker price of over $100,000.

1995 Porsche 928GTS

Now here is quite possibly the best 1995 928 GTS in the world. Originally an American car, this example has spent the past three years with a Porsche collector in Germany. Before being bought by the collector, it was owned by a major 928 enthusiast who was responsible for creating the 928 Registry; a resource that has become invaluable to 928 owners and prospective buyers looking to research the history of particular 928’s. He was the second owner, and purchased it from the original owner back in 2000 in Orlando, Florida. The second owner sold the GTS back in 2012 to the German collector for (I believe) $107,500.

Now, you may think that the asking price is somewhat absurd, but you will probably never find a GTS in this condition ever again, anywhere. Since the supply of mint 928 GTS 5-speeds is small and fixed, it doesn’t take much demand to make prices go “sky high.” Also, in the world of collectible Porsche’s, $132,000 (the approximate equivalent of 125.500 euro’s) isn’t that much. Furthermore, this is one of only 30 1995 928 GTS five-speeds originally sent to the United States. With a quick search on the 928 Registry, it is one of 9 1995 North American GTS’s painted in Midnight Blue, and one of only 5 5-speeds. Also, according to the registry, it is one of only eight (probably fewer) 1995 5-speeds with under 20,000 original miles.
