Signal Green 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S

So, I thought I was done with green cars for a while, but there are a couple more that simply are too good to pass by. In truth, this Signal Green 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S is the car that began my foray into the classifieds and lead me to most of the other green Porsches I featured last week. Andrew had seen a post on Instagram suggesting that this car would be put up for sale. It took a while to pop up, and in the meantime the various others came to my attention. But here it is indeed for sale. A couple weeks back I featured a X50-equipped 996TT with only 4K miles on it and wondered about the collector value and potential of these cars. The premium being asked for that very low mileage seemed reasonable, but of course it’s only reasonable if it continues to command such a premium. This Turbo S takes all of the collector factors to the next level; I’m not sure if any other 996TT (assuming we ignore the subjectivities surrounding exterior color) possesses a better combination of attributes to help it stand out as this one.

2003 Porsche 911 Turbo X50

Typically, when we look at a 996TT for sale our focus falls largely on its performance value. They are capable of providing supercar levels of performance all for the price of a nice family sedan. However, with only 4,556 miles on the clock this 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo equipped with the X50 powerkit will follow a different tack. The potential buyer of this Turbo is likely banking on the potential collectibility of the model and given the sometimes significant correlation between mileage and value that means this Turbo won’t be seeing much time on the street. Thus, performance value isn’t really what we’re after here. This one is all about speculation. That it has the powerkit is key and I’m seeing fewer such examples coming around. I’m not sure if that’s because owners are holding on to them more so now than in the past or whether this is just a blip. But those searching for a factory-equipped example certainly will be hard pressed to find a lower-mileage 996TT on the market.

2001 Porsche 911 Turbo

I revisited this Guards Red 996TT last week (still available by the way) in part because that color is fairly rare to see on the 996. My interest in this Turbo is somewhat similar, though in this case we have a combination of a more interesting interior and exterior to help stimulate our senses. There are a plethora of silver and black examples to be had such that I almost always feel it’s a missed opportunity to allow to slip by most any other color. The basic facts of these cars are well known: prodigious performance for reasonable cost, but with an appearance that not everyone can love either. Unlike its naturally-aspirated siblings, there are no IMS bearing concerns with the engine. So here we have a Midnight Blue 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Utah, with Natural Brown interior and 57,078 miles on it.

2002 Porsche 911 Turbo – REVISIT

The Guards Red 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo we featured in early April remains for sale. After a few auctions that failed to meet the reserve the seller has decided to forgo the suspense and list it with his asking price. That price, $60K, is about $10K above where auctions have ended so we’ll have to see whether anyone has enough interest to go that high. We don’t see Guards Red on the 996TT very often and this one has pretty low miles so perhaps it will sell. That price does begin to eat into the great values we typically see with these cars, but even at $60K it’s a heck of a lot of performance for your money.

2002 Porsche 911 Turbo

For as frequently as we come across a Guards Red 911 or a 996TT, it is surprising how infrequently we come across the two in one package. Guards Red seems to have fallen out of favor as we moved through the ’90s and into the 2000s. Seeing a new one is almost unheard of. But here we have one of the few: a Guards Red 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Georgia, with only 12,855 miles on it. Like any 996TT the performance per dollar is going to be mind blowing, but it’ll be interesting to see if the seemingly rare exterior color plus low mileage manages to push this one a bit higher. How much has the market taken notice of these supercar bargains?

2003 Porsche 911 Turbo X50

Last week we featured a pretty nice Seal Grey 996TT that sold for $44,100. As usual, it was a very nice performance value. As part of that post I spoke of the possibility of these cars attracting the notice of collectors and mentioned that I felt that notice would be – at least for a time – limited to interesting colors and X50-equipped cars. Here we have just such an example with mileage similar to last week’s 996TT and a similar asking price to where the Seal Grey example sold. This Midnight Blue Metallic 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Texas with 52,694 miles on it, probably has too much mileage to really grab a collector’s attention, but at its current asking price it should fall as another really nice value and all things considered should be a better value than last week’s example.

2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

We’ve had some discussion lately about the possibility of Porsche’s 996TT becoming popular on the collector market, which would then lead to higher prices as larger segments begin to take notice of these unloved, but extremely quick 911s. There is little doubt that the GT2 and GT3 are beginning to garner that appeal, but the Turbo remains less certain. Prices have gone up, but only marginally, and even with higher prices these remain one of the best performance bargains available. I am one that thinks these will become sought after by collectors – not to the same degree as the air-cooled Turbos, or at least not yet, but sought after nonetheless. However, as with many collector vehicles I think for the time being it will only be very low mileage and/or rare color models equipped with the X50 package that we see attract such notice. Examples with a few miles on them, like this Seal Grey 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe located in California, should still come in for reasonable cost. And that’s a very good thing as it means buyers can still get their hands on a fantastic machine that remains in good condition, but without having to mortgage the farm.

2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

I’m not always the best person to write about the 911 Turbo when it comes to performance value. In part that is because I live in a city and drive a car with only 142 hp (though it is pretty light) and can’t even remember the last time I used a gear past third. And even third gear is only used for dawdling. So, power is never an issue and having three times as much horsepower almost seems confusing. That said, for most people this is not their typical experience and even I have driven much quicker cars and fully understand the allure of that extra power. While not necessarily what I would prioritize I do understand it, or in the words of Frasier Crane, “if less is more, just think how much more more will be!” Let’s get to the car here, which comes from our consistent favorite when searching for that elusive combination of supercar performance and reasonable cost: the Porsche 996TT. As the first of the water-cooled Turbos and with styling that most feel is a departure from the 911’s iconic design, the 996TT has long been a bargain and mainstay for those in search of the most bang for their buck. But that is starting to change, even if slowly. As prices for air-cooled Turbos create an ever widening gap between their values and those of their water-cooled successors, buyers appear to be increasingly turning their attention to these unloved models. We are even beginning to see collectors take notice, though for the most part that seems to be restricted to the GT2 and GT3 for now. Could it be that even the 996TT will soon see a sharp rise in value and value-conscious buyers again will have to search for the next alternative? The example we see here may shed some light on that question: an Artic Silver Metallic 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, located in North Carolina, with 16,430 miles on it.

2001 Porsche 911 Turbo

Enough with high-dollar air-cooled Turbos and other rare 911s. They are wonderful machines, but let’s dip our toes back in the performance value end of the pool with this Rainforest Green Metallic 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo with Savannah Beige interior and 31,040 miles on it. In all of my time perusing the Porsche classifieds I cannot ever recall coming across a 996, let along a 996TT, in this color – or frankly in most any shade of green. We’ve remarked before how Green seems to be a persistently underappreciated color. That is especially true of any brighter shade of green; the closer the shade looks to black the more popular it tends to be. Rainforest Green appears to fall into a middle ground. It’s brighter than Forest Green and other similar dark examples, but obviously a far cry from some of Porsche’s pastel greens such as Viper Green or Lime Green. So we will have to see what sort of appeal this garners, but with its Savannah Beige interior it definitely has a feel of the forest about it. It is extremely earthy. For my tastes the exterior is very nice as I have no aversion to a green exterior. I would prefer one of the darker tan colors for the interior, but as I have said previously I think any of the tan interior choices complements a green exterior particularly well. While this one is not perfect, it would suit me better than many other applications.

2002 Porsche 911 Turbo X50

Supercar performance without the supercar price. That long has been the hallmark of the 911 Turbo and is especially the case for the 996TT where values have remained suppressed for some time now. The question is whether they will always remain so. It’s certainly the case that these water-cooled 911s will struggle to garner the same demand as their air-cooled predecessors, but as prices continue to significantly rise for the 993TT the bargain that is the 996TT becomes ever more apparent. It’s impossible for that fact to escape the notice of buyers for too long. What I think will remain the case for the foreseeable future is the value of any 996TT with a reasonable degree of mileage, which is exactly the place where we find the car we see here: a Seal Grey 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in New Jersey, with the optional X50 power package and 58,750 miles on it.
