2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG

I have always felt like the W208 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG was missing something. In fact, I know what it was missing: a few things. The W208 CLK-Class was based on the W202 C-Class but styled after the W210 E-Class. But if you didn’t know this you looked at a CLK and thought it was just basically an E-Class coupe. So when Mercedes decided to make a CLK55 AMG it was pretty much going to be an E55 AMG coupe, right? Not so fast.

In my opinion, the CLK55 AMG is about 8/10ths of a E55 AMG. I may be a little biased since I own a W210 E55, but the equipment and stats don’t lie. First on the outside, the E55 got 18 inch Monoblocks while the CLK55 had to settle for 17 inch. Also a section of the taillights are smoked on the E55 but clear on CLK55. Inside, the big difference is that the E55 had different seats that were only found on the E55 and no other W210 or W208.…

2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S

Porsche (and Tom Cruise in Risky Business) proudly tout that “there is no substitute” for their cars. In my opinion, they probably aren’t all that wrong. If you want a German two-door car, a 911 is a never a bad choice. But what if you wanted something that did basically all the same things as a 911 but just in a different package? Not a substitute per say, but just a different kind of German two-door car. This is where the Mercedes-AMG GT S comes in.

The GT S from AMG is standalone model (not an AMG version of a pedestrian model) that combines low slung styling with a 0-60 time in about 3.5 seconds. It only seats two and unlike the 911 is front engined, but that doesn’t hurt this car one bit — at least in my eyes.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 190E 3.2 AMG

One of the first cars to be produced following the official merger between AMG and Mercedes-Benz was the 190E AMG 3.2. These cars came with an aggressive bodykit, giving the W201 a wedge-shaped profile reminiscent of the infamous W124 Hammer, and an enlarged version of the M103 six cylinder motor, bored out to 3.2 liters to produce about 234 hp. Only around 200 of these were made, so the chances of finding one today are slim. However, for a time AMG continued to offer an à la carte menu of upgrades for Mercedes customers to choose from. As a result, a number of W201s were specified with an idiosyncratic mixture of AMG styling and performance parts. This 190E for example, for sale near Stuttgart in Germany, combines an almost bone stock exterior with an AMG-modified motor, making for the ultimate sleeper.

2005 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG

Lots of times I ponder how cheap a car has to be for me to put up the maintenance and inevitable repairs. Weigh the amount of enjoyment you will receive vs. the purchase price plus maintenance and repairs. Sometimes the formula is pretty simple with cheaper cars. But once you start looking at more expensive cars, the math can get pretty tricky. Today’s featured car, the infamous Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG, is going to have you thinking long and hard about considering how cheap these are becoming.

We all know the backstory about the CL65 AMG and the rest of M275 AMG engine family. This monster checks in at 603 hp and 738 lb·ft of torque that even now 12 years later is crazy for a car that is as docile as any regular car. Of course, all this power comes with massive maintenance and repair bills. The W215 chassis even without the AMG madness is enough to scare most people away with ABC issues, body corrosion, gauge cluster failures, broken door wiring and the list goes on and on.…

2005 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate

In my opinion, very few modern Mercedes-Benz have any kind of collectible value. You buy them, get your use from them, then move on to the next car. Of course there are exceptions to everything and today’s vehicle is one of those. The W211 AMG estates, both in E55 and E63 guise, are now reaching cult-following status from Mercedes enthusiasts yet are valued by a more general audience, too. There are groups of people who search the country for these wild wagons in order to find the perfect one for them. This of course, is keeping values much higher than their sedan counterparts. However, this 2005 for sale in Sacramento is surprisingly on par with the sedan prices and actually the cheapest E55 estate I’ve seen come up for sale. Why you ask?

This is a 2 owner Sport Wagon with Clean Carfax and Clean California Title in hand.

This vehicle was well serviced at Mercedes Benz dealership and local Mercedes independent shop and comes with lots of service records. Just passed Smog inspection with Certificate available in hand.

Just to cut to the chase, this $13,900 E55 estate has just over 175,000 miles. Before you get too disappointed and write it off, hear me out for a second. I’m a full member of the “miles don’t scare me” club and this is a perfect example why. The M113K engine paired with the 722.6 gearbox has been tested through and through to prove it is a durable combination as long as you take care of them.…

Ending Soon: What We’re Watching

Has it really been a month since our last “What We’re Watching”?!? Today I’ve lined up another group of rare and rarely seen models that all have their fans. Once again, they’re all no reserve, offering us a great glimpse at where the market is heading on some models and where deals can still be found:

Click for Details: 1984 Volkswagen Transporter Syncro Panel Van

This one ticks all the right rarity boxes in the T2 market; it’s a Syncro and very unique in that it’s a panel van, though admittedly that probably limits the appeal to those who carry passengers. The “Expedition Build” makes up for it, though, and this adventure van looks prime for traveling anywhere. Bidding is heating up on the no reserve auction, but this one is still a lot cheaper than you’d expect normally for a built Syncro at only $15,000 with a few days to go.

Click for Details: 1989 Volkswagen Fox Wagon

It takes a strong VW lover to appreciate the Fox, but the diminutive 2-door wagon has arguably the greatest appeal of the run. Built in Brazil, these models shared a lot in common with Audis of the same period with a longitudinal layout. Unlike what the seller indicates, that makes a VR6 swap not impossible, but not hugely easy. It sounds like the running condition could probably be sorted reasonably easily if the car at least starts, and the chassis is reasonably clean appearing with lower miles. Right now, a single $1,500 bid buys it, but that’s probably still strong considering it’s only a roller.

Click for Details: 2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG

We definitely don’t give much press to the R170, but we probably should since the nutters at AMG got their hands on them and crafted a great option. The SLK32 might not have had the big V8 like the later 55s did, but you still got 349 horsepower from the 3.2 liter V6 for top-down 0-60 in 5 seconds.…

Tuner Tuesday: 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG RENNtech Laurence Gartel Art Car

I’ve seen art cars in the past but today’s combination might take the cake. This 2007 SL65 AMG is the creation of a man who is considered a pioneer of digital art, Laurence Gartel. Gartel has done work with the likes of Andy Warhol, major household brands, celebrities, NASA, the Grammys and of course unique cars. This latest art car is none other than the torque monster itself, the W230 SL65 AMG. Of course, just being a regular SL65 isn’t enough. This SL was sent to RENNtech in Florida and came back with an always mind-blowing 670 horsepower and 840 lb·ft of torque thus probably making this the fastest piece of rolling art out there.

2015 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

Earlier this week I looked at a SL550 Mille Miglia 417 that was (dis)graced with matte black paint and red accents throughout. My argument was that it was an SL that no SL buyers wanted. Today’s vehicle, a 2015 G63 AMG, is along the same lines of being just as ostentatious, but Mercedes gave buyers exactly what they want.

Special Edition-CC1 package (“Crazy Color Edition”)-2015 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG? with a Sunsetbeam paint finish and a $20,000 performance studio package, which includes designo Carbon Fiber trim, two-tone paintwork, 20″ Black AMG five spoke wheels, …plus much more. This Special Edition, pearl shimmering vehicle is about as equipped as Mercedes-Benz makes a G-wagon/wagen, and is a limited edition sparten truck offered in only select countries.

If you are buying a G-Wagen, you are probably buying it for one of two reasons: To own a one-of-a-kind ultimate off-road vehicle that offers features unlike anything on the market or to own a vehicle that you can still be noticed in even if you can’t find a parking space directly in front of Starbucks. If you are in the latter of those options, Mercedes gave you everything it in power to get those eyeballs on you by offering their legendary G in every color that comes out of the Skittles bag. I’m serious, AMG calls these the “Performance Studio Colors” which are “Bold and adventurous and have an iridescent shine, perfectly complementing the glossy black accents of the wheels and roof.”  You have your choice between orange, purple, lime green, yellow or red. This 2015 is painted in Sunsetbeam Orange wasn’t just a special color you picked out, you had to drop an addition $20,000 for 20-inch AMG 5-spoke wheels, designo Black Nappa leather with color stitching, designo AMG carbon fiber trim, and AMG sport front seats.…

Ending Soon: What We’re Watching

Occasionally we don’t have the time to get to all the auctions that catch our eye. With that in mind, we’re going to be putting together some auctions that are interesting and may offer you a good value – or we’re just curious where they’ll end up!

Click for Details: 2000 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

This 2000 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG looks great with only 93,000 miles on the clock. Condition throughout seems to be very good and records are present, as well as a clean bill of health on the CarFax. But the real draw is the no reserve auction format – at time of writing, the car sits under $6,000!

Click for Details: 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo

The 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo isn’t the most desirable model year, but this one looks nice in Guards Red over Linen leather. While it’s a TMU car, there’s a healthy bit of recent service history and the overall presentation looks like a nice driver. The TMU and 1987 build status should keep bids down, but the auction is no reserve. It will be interesting to see where a 944 Turbo driver ends up!

Click for Details: 1992 Porsche 911 Turbo

It’s a strange world we live in when you can ask close to MSRP for a 25 year old car and it suddenly seems reasonable. But that’s the case with this 1992 911 Turbo. Technically, it’s a no reserve auction with a $95,000 Buy It Now, but a single $85,000 bid would win it unless the seller ends the auction early.

Click for Details: 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300E

We looked at this Glacier Green 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300E before, but it’s back on a no reserve auction with a starting bid below $2,000. Though it’s got a lot of miles and isn’t 100% original, it still seems like a nice driver with a lot of work done.…

2001 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

I’ve expressed my love for the W210 E55 AMG before. I think they are one of the best value Mercedes you can buy. It’s still relatively fast even by 2017 terms, it’s not too ugly and most importantly it won’t bankrupt you in an afternoon. I can’t think of a reason I’d ever want to sell mine as the values have been staying pretty stable and given it’s rarity, it might even creep up in value a little — at least I hope. So when I came across this low-mile 2001 for sale in Virginia, I had to take a closer look.

For sale is my mint condition 2001 Mercedes E55 AMG. The car has 46,394 miles and is brilliant silver over two tone. The car has never been in any type of accident and wears brand new Hankook tires on all four corners. The wheels are the original 18″ staggered monoblock style with absolutely no curb rash anywhere. This vehicle is truly like new. The pixels on the dash all work and the leather is free from the wear you typically see on these cars, especially on the drivers side side-bolsters. The headliner is in perfect condition and does not sag at all. The paint still gleams like day one and has been garage kept it’s entire life. The car is free from any signs of rust from top to bottom. This car drives like a dream, perfect in every way. Transmission shifts perfectly and smoothly, engine is strong, reliable, and powerful. The AC and heat work great as well as all electrical devices on the car.
