Tuner Tuesday: 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG RENNtech Laurence Gartel Art Car

I’ve seen art cars in the past but today’s combination might take the cake. This 2007 SL65 AMG is the creation of a man who is considered a pioneer of digital art, Laurence Gartel. Gartel has done work with the likes of Andy Warhol, major household brands, celebrities, NASA, the Grammys and of course unique cars. This latest art car is none other than the torque monster itself, the W230 SL65 AMG. Of course, just being a regular SL65 isn’t enough. This SL was sent to RENNtech in Florida and came back with an always mind-blowing 670 horsepower and 840 lb·ft of torque thus probably making this the fastest piece of rolling art out there.

1952 Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A ‘Rose Garden’

Art cars are hit or miss for me. Either they are really well done by a famous artist that ads to overall aesthetic of the car or ”that hippie guy at the end of the street is in his driveway without a shirt on painting his car.” Luckily, the car we are featuring today is the former. This 1952 Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A was done up by artist Hiro Yamagata, a fairly well known guy in the ‘Art Car’ circles as part of his Earthly Paradise series. So if you are still on board with this less than wicked garden, let’s take a deeper look.

1992 BMW Z1

No….no…..someone didn’t park a precious BMW Z1 overnight on the street in the Bronx. What you’re looking at, rather, is art. Or an imitation thereof. BMW is well known for its series of one off “Art Cars.” From Alexander Calder to Andy Warhol, a number of popular artists have had their go at creating art in motion, using a variety of BMW models as their canvas. A.R. Penck, a neo-expressionist painter hailing from Dresden, went to work on the Z1 in 1991. The artist drew inspiration from cave paintings and sign language to come up with this striking motif over a red base.

This Z1 Art Car tribute is for sale just northeast of Cologne, Germany and would be permissible to import to the US under the “show and display” rule. It will still be another four years until it reaches the exempt 25 year mark for non-federalized imports.
