2021 Audi RS5 Sportback Ascari Launch Edition

Whew, that’s a mouthful of a headline! And while I was familiar with the RS5 and the Sportback variant, I wasn’t immediately familiar with this special model. What is it? Well, for $20,500 on top of your RS5’s base price, the Ascari Launch Edition added 20″ forged wheels, Ascari Blue Metallic paint from Audi Exclusive, matte aluminum-optic trim, blue calipers for the ceramic front brakes, an RS Sport exhaust, RS Sport suspension, matte carbon inlays, Dynamic Steering, a carbon-fiber engine cover, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, a head-up display, an Alcantara-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, and a 174-mph top speed. Only 100 were made, and while it’s an expensive package, it sure offered a lot of kit. Of course, it also came with the RS5’s standard 444 horsepower linked exclusively with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. As fast four-doors go, it’s a quick one.

2022 Audi RS6 Avant Exclusive

Back in 2020 I saw the first shipment of fully wrapped RS6s arrive at the port next to my home. Audi’s top-tier wagon had finally arrived, with a full-fat 4.0T cranking out 561 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with a hybrid assistance motor and an eight-speed automatic gearbax, it’s no surprise the numbers are staggering. 0-60 is a hair over 3 seconds, and it’ll bury the needle close to 200 mph if deregulated. This isn’t a supercar; this is a five-passenger wagon that weighs in just over 5,000 lbs – with nothing in it! Also staggering? The tech, with touchscreens, virtual cockpit, and torque-vectoring. The tires, which measure 285/30 and up to 22″ in diameter. The brakes, which are 16.5″ in front and ‘only’ 14.6″ out back. And, the price. People are still in line to wait for these cars, and that’s despite the monster pricetag starting at $121,000. Tick a few extra options, like running the car through Audi Exclusive with a color like today’s Goodwood Green Pearl Effect, and you’re looking at $140,000 plus!

2016 Audi TTS Coupe Quattro Exclusive

Twenty years ago, the Audi TTS would have been a very exciting proposition. Built on the universally praised MQB platform, the third generation 8S TT is lighter than the original, better balanced, and more powerful. With close to 300 horsepower and 280 lb.ft of torque from the 2.0 TSFI turbocharged inline-4, it’s a Golf R in a slinky dinner dress. Equipped with the impressive dual-clutch 6-speed S-Tronic transmission and launch control, the results are hard to argue with: 0-60 in 4.2 seconds and a quarter mile in 12.8 at 108 mph. Unthinkable for anything but the most exotic exotics a few generations ago, this is all wrapped up in a reasonably affordable and attractive package that is usable year-round and has few drawbacks.

But the TTS falls into a no man’s land today. It’s $10,000 more expensive than the base TT – already quite an impressive car. It’s also more expensive than the more practical Golf R on which it is based. A lot more expensive. But more troubling, with a few options like today’s it is also dearer than a base Porsche 718 Cayman. And while it soundly out-drags the base Cayman, which would you rather impress friends in? That means, however, that you can get them more affordably today than some similar-performing cars, so let’s look at today’s example – which made its way through Audi’s Exclusive department and came out the other side in Porsche’s Riviera Blue. It looks great!

2021 Audi RS7 Sportback

I’m sure that occasionally (or more likely, often) when discussing current color pallets offered by manufacturers I sound like a broken record. The new model is, generally speaking, that 95% of those that purchase the top-tier models for any given manufacturer will select one of three colors: black, gray or white. It reminds me of a book my wife bought for our son for Christmas one year called This Bridge Will Not Be Gray by Dave Eggers. It chronicles in a tongue-in-cheek manner the development of the Golden Gate bridge – reportedly, according to the text, the first orange bridge in the human history. “No bridge had ever been orange. Orange was silly. So most of those involved figured the bridge would be gray. Gray was serious. Gray was safe” the book states about the bridge, and I feel like a fair amount of people buying these near-exotic cars feel the same way. But in the book, Eggers talks about how one of the bridge’s designers – Edward Morrow – decided gray would be the wrong color; that if he was going to have to look at this bridge every day, it should look like something special. The person who ordered this Audi RS7 felt the same way:

2002 Audi S8 Final Edition

For the US market, the last of the D2 Audi S8s were brought here as Audi Exclusive packages; 100 each of three color combinations, with one new color of Avus Silver Pearl Effect over burgundy leather and revised ‘Celebration’ wheels. For the European market, though, the last S8s got a different Audi Exclusive package. Dubbed the ‘Final Edition’, the car came with 20″ high-polish ‘Celebration’ wheels, Bose audio with a six-disc changer, bi-xenon headlights, an extended leather interior, and dark myrtle wood trim. Four colors were offered with four total interiors; Avus Silver Pearl Effect over either Brilliant Red or Mauve leather, Misano Red over Silver Grey leather, Aqua Blue over Morning Dew leather, or Ebony Black over Brilliant Red or Silver Gray leather. What we see here is the latter of those; a lower-mileage Final Edition in Ebony Black Pearl Effect over Silver Gray leather. It might not be the highest-spec car out there, but boy are these Final Editions impressive-looking!
