Theme Week: 1982 Audi Quattro

Of all the cars throughout Audi’s history, the one that made the biggest splash on the automotive scene was the Ur Quattro in 1980. Four wheel drive technology applied to a car built for the street was nothing new. Jensen was the first to market with the FF, which employed a four wheel drive system from Ferguson Research. Audi, however, perfected the all wheel drive concept for non all terrain vehicles and used competition as a showcase for the technology, winning the World Rally Constructors’ Title in 1982 and 1984. This Ur Quattro is for sale near Audi’s home of Ingolstadt, Germany.

1982 Audi Quattro on eBay Deutschland

Here in a rare Audi Ur Quattro. Built in 1982 with her original 140,000 km. Previous owner installed a new turbocharger about 25,000 km prior. The exterior paint is original spot color from Audi. The Ur has three letter entries, original letter is available. Rust is only on a sill at the seam and can be seen on the surface, otherwise I have not seen anything.

Paint still looks very good since the car was always dry in the hall. Of course there is the odd scratch or bump. Features: steel sunroof, electric windows and electric door mirrors, original radio, aluminum 8 x 15 wheels. Since the last drive the front brakes have frozen. This Ur should be taken with a trailer due to the condition of the brakes. They may be gone already but a long distance ride should be taken at your own risk. Delivery in the vicinity is possible, but please ask beforehand. Car can be seen in the vicinity of Ingolstadt. Three small, about 3-5 mm in diameter rust bubbles noticed on the roof and the side panel. Sorry it was not noticed before. The car is current being inspected due to a snapped cable under the bonnet.

We’ve featured a few Ur Quattros here at GCFSB, the last one being a lower mileage example that was selling for $17,500. With the fixes this Quattro needs, I’d suspect bidding to inch close to $15,000 USD, but not much beyond that. With a tidy exterior and interior, this is a landmark car that is worthy of the few fixes it needs to return to its former glory.

Theme Week: 1995 Audi RS2

The RS2 was built on Audi’s 80 Avant; it was Audi’s first “RS” vehicle, and the first of their long line of high-performance wagons.  The RS2 was a joint effort between Audi and Porsche, and represented some of the best efforts from both camps.

While most of the car came from the Audi parts bin, the mad scientists at Porsche transformed the 230bhp Audi 2.2l inline 5 cylinder turbo engine in to a 311bhp fire breather with the addition of bigger turbo, larger fuel injectors, a hotter cam, and remapped ECU.  The power was planted to the road through a 6 speed gear box, and Audi’s legendary quattro with locking differential.  The suspension was revised with Bilstein shocks and larger sway bars.  To bring this monster to a halt, Porsche donated the brakes from the Porsche 968 Club Sport.

These cars are extremely rare, with only 2891 examples built from 1994 to 1995.  For the longest time, to own one in North America was merely a dream for Audi enthusiasts, but that did not stop the RS2 from developing a strong cult following over here.  Luckily there are enthusiasts like the owner of this Volcano Black beauty for sale in Quebec, Canada to bring cars like this to our shores.

With less than 3000 built, and having never being offered in North America this car is certainly hard to come by, and even harder to slap a value on.  This beautiful example has only 84,000 kms (52,195 miles) on the clock, and the owner has lovingly restored this car to great original condition.  On most cars of its age, these are great selling points, but this is an Audi RS2…in North America, if you want one of these, it’s not like you can just move on to the next one.  This car is for sale for $32,000, and to be honest, this car is worth every penny.  This is a car that I absolutely would love to own, which makes me wonder…what are kidneys selling for on the black market these days?

Theme Week: 1998 Audi Cabriolet

The Audi Cabriolet was a rather unremarkable vehicle in the history of Audi, but nonetheless one worth highlighting. Seemingly as generic as its name implies, the Cabriolet was based on the B3 chassis, which was introduced in 1987 and featured design language that would carry Audi into the next century. Sold in some markets until 2000, this 1998 example represents the last year the Cabriolet was sold new in the US market. With its 172 horsepower, 2.7 liter V6 engine mated to a four speed automatic, it never set the world on fire with performance, but it struck a restrained, handsome pose. Even though Princess Diana sported one for a while in the 1990s, few people stateside took notice of Audi’s open roofed offering, opting for more exciting versions from companies like Saab and BMW at the time. As a result, these open roofed Audis can be had for not much cash, this example for sale in Long Island being one of them.

1998 Audi Cabriolet on eBay

1998 Audi Cabriolet VIN# WAUAA88G4WN001789 Black/Tan. This a very rare super clean Audi Cabriolet with only 86k original miles. The car runs, drives and looks great. Plus it has a Power Soft Top, Leather, Wood Trim, Premium Package and more. And we just serviced (for over $1,300) the car so it’s ready to go for the summer!

I have a soft spot for the Audi Cabriolet, which most likely comes from my attraction to obscure automobiles. Most of these Cabriolets have been driven hard or scrapped by now, so it’s nice to see a clean one like this surface. While it’s missing the Audi badge on the trunk, everything else looks pretty tidy. I’d say almost $6,000 is pushing it in terms of value. About $1,000 to $1,500 less would be just about right.

1991 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro Avant

The Audi 100 and 200, known initially as the 5000 here in the US market, was a car ahead of its time when it debuted in 1982. With flush mounted glass, integrated bumpers and smooth body lines, this car benefitted from a low coefficient of drag. By 1990, other manufacturers had caught up, and so Audi decided to send the 200 off with a bang and dropped a 20 valve 5 cylinder turbocharged engine in it, which had 217 horsepower and was good for under seven second 0-60 times. Audi offered this engine in both the 200 sedan and Avant. At the same time this car appeared on the scene, Audi was suffering in the wake of the unintended acceleration scandal which saw it’s sales figures reach record lows in this very model year – around 12,000 cars.

There have been estimates as low as 150 of these Turbo Quattro Avants were brought into the US, some as high as 1,000. Considering some may not be roadworthy anymore, we’re dealing with a rare car here. Quite unfortunate, given how good of a performer the 200 Turbo Quattro Avant was. This particular car is for sale in Oregon and looks great in Lago Blue.

1991 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro Avant on Portland Craigslist

1991 Audi 200 turbo quattro Avant. This is an amazing example of a 1 year only vehicle that is both fun and very practicle. 215,000 well kept miles. Just had the timing belt done, new brake accumulater (bomb), complete tuneup and new battery. This is the first year of the 20 valve turbo motor and with the stage II chip and 3 inch custom exhaust it is running at just about 280hp. We get a constant 20mpg and have seen a best tank of freeway driving of 26mpg. The interior is in excellent shape with only some padding break down in the drivers side bolster of the drivers side sport seat. The factory sport seats are excellent and the seat adjustment memory panel functions great as do the original seat heaters. It also has a high end Eclipse stereo with iPod connection.

The only two things that aren’t operating well is that the sunroof motor is very slow and the airbag light is on due to the clockspring being worn. Other mods include euro lights with relays, H&R sport springs with Koni adjustable struts, upper strut bar for extra chassis stiffness, Porsche big red brake calipers in the front, 17″ Ronal R-28 wheels with low mileage 215/50/17 Toyo Proxes4 tires. The wheels have some slight curbage from daily driving but present well. There is also a set of 16″ Avus style wheels mounted with fairly low mile studded snow tires. The traction of this car with the 4 wheel drive and studded snows is absolutely amazing and this is one of the last cars with the center diff lock and the ABS switch to turn off the ABS. I also have plenty of high quality Mann and Mahle oil filters and the three volume set of factory manuals that will go with the sale.

We have put 100,000 miles on this car with virtually no problems and still have a hard time giving it up since there is very little out there that compares (supposedly less than 200 of these 91 20 valve turbo wagons were brought into the states). This car will pull hard to over 130mph (not that I have done that) gets over 20mpg and can easily carry a family of 4 and a dog in complete luxury in any weather condition and all of that for only $6500 obo.

It’s refreshing to see a Craigslist ad so descriptive and even though this Avant has high mileage, it’s the year to have and has clearly been owned and appreciated by an enthusiast. This same car was advertised back in May at $7,500. Given the mileage, I felt it was a bit steep at this time, but the owner seems motivated to sell and open to offers. If I had to guess, somewhere between $5,000 to $5,500 would probably be a reasonable offer.

Clean 1984 Audi 4000S Quattro For Sale

I am not an Audi guy, but I am a VW enthusiast which is kind of silly I suppose.  I have been watching this seller raffle off his Audi’s for a bit.  They are always well kept, rare, and worst of all local to me.

There may be time for me to become an Audi guy yet.  This 1984 4000S Quattro may be just the thing.

1984 Audi 4000S Quattro:

From the seller –

“Selling off a few of my Audi’s..This is a Very Rare one I have had for a few years..Beautiful 1984 4000s Quattro. Metallic schwartz Black exterior, brown interior. Rarest Year of the Audi 4000. Power windows, power mirrors, power sunroof/moonroof, power steering, power brakes, power locks, cruise control. ALL WORK! Since i have owned it I have done many things to the car. Last October I had VERY RARE BBS front air-dam sprayed to match car and grill as well. Also at that time installed 1 piece Glass original European Flat Cibie Headlights in Mint Condition and VERY RARE.  Has side skirts from 85-87 years that i should have sprayed, but did not. rear spoiler is mint. Front Bosch fog lights with factory switch in car. H&R Racing springs with bilsteins which allow the custom for this car Konig 17″ Wheels/Hankook Tires with 75%.  Xlerator High Performance Stainless muffler and exhaust tip. In the last month I have done the Heater Core replacement and also the timing belt/water pump/tensioner roller. The car always starts and runs perfect and i have never had a problem with it. Just felt it needed these things done to be perfect. front and rear locking diffs. Tint Windows. Just under 157k, but i have been driving the car a few days a week so that is going up slowly..Power windows work well, power locks work well. car has clifford alarm. Cruise control actually works too..rare!! interior is near mint condition, headliner sunroof, sun visors all look and work well. no rips or tears and carpet and mats are like new. dash has cracks and that the only problem but i do have a dash cover that is custom for the car. Factory gauges added in tripod on dash. Battery was relocated to the trunk to make the stereo system clean. custom trunk amp cover with amp underneath and battery power core so no lights dimming at high bass. Also a fan is installed to keep cool. Alpine Stereo, 2 10″ pioneer subs, 1700 total watts. Cover works and u can use trunk just like normal. the stereo is custom thru out. The 2 subs on rear dash under a custom cover with coaxial speakers next to them. front has tweeters in mirror cover and door speakers as well. 8 speaker system. Sounds absolutely amazing! works well and never had a problem. clutch, brakes, everything works well. 4 Custom courtesy lights added, 2 blue/green lights, 1 under each side floor to see the floor when u get in or out. One red light mounted between handbrake and shifter and one in the lighter ash tray. Never been in an accident, VERY straight without any rust whatsoever. All pics of car on photobucket. my id there is hoopster21 and u can find the folder with the pics. This car is one of a kind and one of the nicest in the usa from 1984. It was the 1984 winter games official car. Most are ruined and been smashed in the wrecking yards. This car has no rust whatsoever, not ever surface rust. the hood has some scratches and minor paint cracking. pacific northwest car entire life, this car is rock solid and as rare as you will find. first year quattro sedan in usa. Perfect Carfax.”

Neat car and incredibly rare.  I gather there are not many stateside that are still upright much less in this condition.  Not to say this is mint, given the angle and distance of the pictures I imagine this Audi has its share of patina.  The car has more than 150k so I would expect that.

But it has lived with someone who cares, which is important.  From the sounds of it is mechanically sound and rust free.  That makes for a great foundation… dings, nicks, and tears can all be fixed with minimal investment.  Body rot, widespread mechanical issues, and awful paint are serious business.

Bidding currently sits at a few hundred dollars with a buy it now of nearly $6k.  The buy it now won’t happen but this would be a great driver for $4.5k.  I will be curious to see where this one goes.

1990 VW Corrado for sale

The Corrado is like an ex-girlfriend, the one where you romanticize the relationship and remember the great aspects, but if you try to rekindle that fire it always ends up more complicated and frustrating than seems worth it. The Corrado got amazing reviews when it came out, and is still a looker with plenty of fun factor, but it’s nearly impossible to find one that is even close to how it came off the showroom floor. They’re all either modified to the extreme or beat to hell. Perhaps, like the best ex-girlfriends, the really quality examples are tucked away and held onto with great vigor by their current boyfriends.

Today’s Corrado definitely leans towards the mod-racer end of the spectrum, but is actually looking pretty nice in the great Audi TT Aviator gray with a matching Audi 225hp 1.8T. The mod list grows and grows along the standard VW Group and aftermarket paths, but unfortunately this seller falls into the trap of keeping a little too close of tabs on his receipts. A claimed $45k invested and an $18k asking price make this ex-girlfriend, regardless of how many surgeries she’s undergone, too expensive for me.

As you can see the cost of build is endless…

I dig this Corraudi. I’ve always loved that TT gray, and the modifications are thorough. Unfortunately, it’s a great demonstration that tuner cars are no investment. Even if it’s taken $45k to get here (including labor), it’s hard to imagine any Corrado going for more than $15k. The bids appear to reflect this, as just 3 people have bid it up to $5,000 at time of writing. It’s fast, it’s nice, but don’t drop $45k into an old VW unless you plan on counting at least $30k of that as paid for by personal enjoyment.

2009 Spyker C8 Spyder

While the Spyker is not a German vehicle, it has an Audi V8 and craftsmanship akin to what we are used to from the Fatherland. I thought it was about time to shed some light on this exotic. The name Spyker originated from two Dutch brothers, Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker. They founded the firm in 1880 and one of their first notable projects was the construction of the Golden Carriage used by the Dutch Royal Family to this day. In 1900, they debuted their first automobiles and three years later, they created the 60 HP, which was the world’s first four wheel drive car with a single engine and four wheel brakes. During World War I, the company manufactured airplanes and aircraft engines, similar to other contemporary manufacturers that had switched their production to military applications.

After World War I, Spyker went bankrupt and ceased production in 1922. Resurrected in 1999, the new Spyker vehicles pay homage to the company’s aircraft heritage. Their slogan is Nulla tenaci invia est via, which in Latin means “For the tenacious, no road is impassable.” The new cars were dubbed the C8 Laviolette and C8 Spyder, and employed Audi’s 4.2 liter V8. These cars are exceptionally well made, employing a great deal of old world craftsmanship in the way of quilted leather, turned aluminum and an intriguing shifter mechanism with exposed linkage. Spyker was owned and subsequently sold off by Swedish Automobile AB to North Street Capital, whose managing partner is a racing enthusiast. It is not quite clear what the future holds for Spyker, but nevertheless, these are very unique, well made vehicles. This particular 2009 Spyder presents nicely with low mileage and black accentuates the aluminum accents well.

2009 Spyker C8 Spyder on eBay

2009 Spyker C8 Spyder Convertible

Exterior color: Jet Black
Interior color: Tan

Included Optional Equipment: V8, 6 Speed Manual Transmission. Low Miles. Came from a Exotic car collection. Rare and hard to find. Accessories included with vehicle: 2 Master Keys. Owner’s Manual

This Spyker is basically a three year old brand new car. New, these were just shy of $220,000. I can’t imagine that they have appreciated beyond that original asking price. If I had to estimate, anywhere between $180,000 to $190,000 should be a reasonable offer for this supercar. If a Ferrari or Lamborghini is too mainstream for you, but an Audi R8 a bit too sterile, the Spyker combines exclusivity, coachbuilt quality and reliable, German performance in one wild package.

2000 Audi RS4 Avant, 1 of 4 in the USA

I preface this entry by stating that my favorite estate vehicle of all time is the Audi RS2. This high performance version of the Audi 90 estate was built in the same factory as the legendary Mercedes-Benz W124 500E/E500 and had some tasty Porsche styling bits to compliment it’s 2.2 liter, 20 valve 5 cylinder turbo engine. As a follow up, Audi introduced the A4 based RS4 in 1999, but never imported this vehicle to the US. Or did they…..?

2000 Audi RS4 Avant on VW Vortex

The seller states:

I’m posting this for a very good client of mine. He had 3 of these brought into the United States in 2001 and they are all legit for the USA. It was hemogenized and has a full 17 digit VIN Number. I’ve personally sat in this car and driven it and it is unbelievable. He bought 3, sold off one back in 2001 and currently has two of them (his and hers). This vehicle has not been beaten on any whatsoever (couple are in their early 70’s) just true Audi enthusiasts. Vehicle holds a clean Colorado title and is located in Aspen, CO. Seriously enquires only please.

Brand new tires on stock RS4 wheels and brand new Blizzaks on a secondary set of wheels.
Vehicle is being offered at $49,000. Again, serious enquires only please. This vehicle was owned the right way and I am doing this as a favor for a client!

As much as I like this RS4, the $49,000 asking price is too high in my opinion, even if a value on such a rare car is hard to place. At this price point, I simply couldn’t drive this car in good conscience on a regular basis. If it were about $15,000 cheaper, this would be a seriously tempting piece. One thing is certain though, the cool factor for this car is off the charts and you’ll never see yourself coming and going on the street, unless RS4 clones suddenly become all the rage.

2007 Audi A3 ready for street or track

You don’t see too many A3s setup like this. Tasteful mods have this 25,150 mile Audi ready for light track or autocross duty, but leave it perfectly manageable for the spirited daily commute.
The car has a dyno slip showing 270 horsepower off the crank of the 3.2 liter V6, channeled through the quattro system. Despite the mods and the photos of the car on the track the seller says the factory warranty is still in effect through April and the transmission’s lifetime warranty is also still good.
Lots of mods and spare parts are included with the sale.
Along with these mods listed from the seller you also get all the stock parts:

2004 Audi Allroad just in time

I’m back near Seattle, Washington for Thanksgiving with my family and landed just as a snow storm blanketed the Pacific Northwest. While the front-wheel drivers are still making it around, it’s looking like they’ll be rendered inadequate very soon. With this in mind, my thoughts turned to all-wheel drive, namely Quattro and what I would love as a serious winter machine, the Audi Allroad. Their faults are known, but with great styling and impressive versatility, I’m willing to overlook them.

As I mentioned before, these cars are not without their flaws. A friend’s had the air suspension go totally haywire, as well as the various electrical afflictions this generation of Audis can have. What made this one stick out to me was the lack of miles and the fact that the air suspension has already been addressed. It’s apparent (and stated) that this car has been well taken care of and is ready to go for the new owner. Maintenance down the road will obviously be Audi-rific, but I think this is about as good a place to start as any when it comes to the Allroad. Apparently listed at $16,950 at the dealership, it’s on eBay at $9k now with a Buy-it-Now of $13,900. 4-wheel drive luxury pulling up to Depreciation Station, wish I had a ticket!

As the flurries intensify, so do my dreams of dominating the snowy roads in an Allroad, empty except for a few Subarus, Audis, and a couple overzealous SUVs stuck in the ditch.
