749whp 2000 Audi A4 Avant

Last week, I posted an E63 AMG wagon, and while it’s an amazing grocery getter, it pales in comparison to this car on basically every front. Needless to say this is not your grandma’s grocery getter, the owner of this mind blowing A4 has spared no expense in making this one of the fastest, if not the fastest A4 Avant in the states.

Starting with a VR6 swap from a VW, and redoing…well…just about everything, this 749whp monster is the definition of sleeper.

I am putting for sale my 2000 B5 Avant with a VR6 swap. I don’t need to sell this car at the moment, so please don’t kick tires if you’re not serious. Also, if you’re gonna get sassy, save it. It would not be possible to replicate this car for the price. I know what I have into it, and I know it is way way more than the asking price. Currently located in Buffalo, NY. The car is originally from Virginia (lived there until this past October) and has never seen a Buffalo winter. Let me be clear with that up front. The underside of this car is rust free.

I’ve been piecing this car together over the past few years, and it has been through a number of renditions/setups. This setup makes almost 300WHP more than it did last year. I recently dyno’d at Innovative Tuning in April/May and made 794WHP at only 32psi. This turbo setup can be pushed into the low-40psi range as shown by a few drag VR6 cars around the US.  As it sits I ran a 10.9@ 137-138mph in the ¼-mile with me driving. If you’re a better driver, you will go faster. I am just a crappy drag racer, and also got booted from the track for not having a cage. It runs a 2.07 FATS time, which isn’t in this cars powerband at all. It runs these times with full interior, as it is driven on the street and on street tires. 3700lbs of fury. The car runs and drives like a stock car would, within reason. I say within reason because it has firm mounts etc so you do feel the engine, but its not overbearing at all.

It cold starts just fine, and you can drive away as soon as you fire it up in the morning. There is no need to wait for it to warm up etc. Thought I suggest not pinning the throttle until oil temps come up, for obvious reasons. The exterior of the car is not perfect. It’s a “15-foot” car, not a show car. It still looks really good, but it does have flaws. However, a good paint restoration would go a long way in improving it. There are 2 small door dents on the passenger side, and 2 dents in the hood. Also, the drivers door has slight bubbling paint in one area that was there when I got the car. It has not spread at all, but you can pick up a new door for about $50 if it bothers you. Comes with High boost E85(32psi), Low Boost E85(22psi), and 93 octane maps. The 93 octane map isn’t for making power, it’s in case you find yourself unable to fill up with e85 in an emergency. Car can be re-tuned for C16/Q16 etc as you see fit, also. Has Launch Control, full electronic boost control with failsafes for overboost, IAT failsafe, Coolant temp failsafe, cold start rev-limit failsafe, boost-by-gear, no-lift shift etc. All 100% configurable. I know I’m forgetting tons of stuff, and am missing tons of little things in the parts list but I will add as I think of it. If you have any questions about the car please feel free to ask. I do not care to answer questions such as “how did you do the swap?” etc. There’s more than enough documentation around to figure that out.

The most impressive thing about this car is that it didn’t come out of a high end race shop, rather it was built by an enthusiast in his garage using the best of the best parts, and a whole lot of know how, and a touch of imagination.

This is another one of those car that you just can’t put a price on, as a plain old 2000 Audi A4 Avant, this car is worth around $7000, add in the impressive parts list, and the $24,500 sale price is a bargain. It is practical, nope; would it make you giggle like a little girl on a regular basis, definitely.

2000 Volkswagen Passat TDI Wagon 6 speed manual

I have lengthy discussions with a good friend of mine in the Boston area about how there is a lack of decent diesel and performance wagons available in the United States with a manual transmission. Coincidentally, my friend drives a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T wagon with a manual gearbox. Here’s an interesting Passat wagon for sale on eBay that he passed along to me earlier this week, one that was brought over by someone in the German military working in the United States. This could very well be the only Passat wagon with the TDI engine and a 6 speed manual in the US at the current time.

The seller states:

Up for sale is a a very rare ONE owner 2000 Volkswagen Passat TDI wagon, with 217k original kilometers which is 135k miles. This is a one owner car that belonged to the original owner who was working in the US on behalf of the German military. This is the legendary diesel wagon which achieves almost 50 miles per gallon, but was never offered for the US market. Best color combination, Black mettallic on Gray. Fully legalized with a clean and clear Maryland title, ready to be registered in any state! This is the only Passat TDI wagon of this body style in all of US.

Features a 1.9 Turbo diesel ALH engine, mated to a 6 speed manual transmission

Loaded with the following options:

Monsoon Sound System
Alloy wheels
Power locks/windows/ mirrors
Climatronic climate control
6 CD changer
Side Impact Airbags
6 SPEED MANUAL
Keyless entry
Here is your chance to own the one and only Passat TDI wagon with a 6 speed manual transmission in all of the US.

Please note the car is a 2000 model, not a 1980 like listed on ebay, as the ebay system cannot decode the vin number. The exterior of the car is in excellent condition. The black paint looks great and has a deep gloss to it, as can be seen from the pictures. This Passat has NEVER been in an accident and has no previous paintwork of any kind! This TDI has a completely clean Autocheck report.

The interior is in great shape with no rips or tears. All power options work great! The entire interior is very clean! Has a spare tire with tool kit. As well as a set of original floor mats. Has nearly new tires all around!

Timing belt and water pump has been replaced at 101k miles at Stohlman VW in VA!

Mechanically: Starts, runs, and drives like a solid german built car. The suspension feels strong and tight with no rattles. The engine runs smooth, and is very powerful. . There are no check engine or warning lights on of any kind. The manual transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears. This car has been taken care of all its life and it really shows. If you wouldnt see the odometer, you would never believe that this car has 135k miles. It looks, and drives like a car with a quarter of its miles.

One thing that I noticed about this car is that it has power front windows and manual rear windows, something not seen on US Passats. This feature is similar to the setup my grandfather had in his 1982 Peugeot 505. A neat touch, I think. Granted this is a rare piece in this country, but in Europe, this would be any old Passat on the market. Over $16k for an 11 year old Passat with about 135,000 miles seems a bit ridiculous. Other Passats of this vintage are regularly trading in the $5,000 to $7,000 range on average. Given it’s rarity, I could see a $1,000 to $2,000 premium, not one which puts it in line with a new Jetta.

2000 Audi RS4 Avant, 1 of 4 in the USA

I preface this entry by stating that my favorite estate vehicle of all time is the Audi RS2. This high performance version of the Audi 90 estate was built in the same factory as the legendary Mercedes-Benz W124 500E/E500 and had some tasty Porsche styling bits to compliment it’s 2.2 liter, 20 valve 5 cylinder turbo engine. As a follow up, Audi introduced the A4 based RS4 in 1999, but never imported this vehicle to the US. Or did they…..?

The seller states:

I’m posting this for a very good client of mine. He had 3 of these brought into the United States in 2001 and they are all legit for the USA. It was hemogenized and has a full 17 digit VIN Number. I’ve personally sat in this car and driven it and it is unbelievable. He bought 3, sold off one back in 2001 and currently has two of them (his and hers). This vehicle has not been beaten on any whatsoever (couple are in their early 70’s) just true Audi enthusiasts. Vehicle holds a clean Colorado title and is located in Aspen, CO. Seriously enquires only please.

Vehicle is being offered at $49,000. Again, serious enquires only please. This vehicle was owned the right way and I am doing this as a favor for a client!

As much as I like this RS4, the $49,000 asking price is too high in my opinion, even if a value on such a rare car is hard to place. At this price point, I simply couldn’t drive this car in good conscience on a regular basis. If it were about $15,000 cheaper, this would be a seriously tempting piece. One thing is certain though, the cool factor for this car is off the charts and you’ll never see yourself coming and going on the street, unless RS4 clones suddenly become all the rage.

2001.5 Audi S4 6-Speed for sale in the Bay Area

I haven’t indulged my S4 infatuation in some time, and today I found one in the Bay Area that’s pushing a lot of good buttons. My appreciation of the B6/7 S4 centered mostly around the name. The new B8 S4, while still large, is much sleeker and seems to continue the understated aggression of the B5 better than the middle children. The 1997-2002 B5 just seems to be a simpler, more elegant machine that reaches its performance and attractiveness with greater ease. The final “2001.5” model year for these brought some mild upgrades which enhanced reliability. Turbo, AWD, and a 6-speed – the only word missing here is Avant.

HKS Turbo Timer for longevity of Turbo life
KONI Stasis Coilovers
Air Intake w/ cone filter (also have factory box)
Tinted all around, however backs are darker
Short Shifter
Kamei Black Grill
Rear Audi Sport License Plate holder

This car exemplifies the “OEM Plus” school of thought, and it’s working very well. Sometimes modern wheels look out of place on older models, but the RS4 wheels look great here. A nicely lowered stance, black grill, and the awesome addition of mudflaps complete the subtle-but-aggressive look. Great modifications on a well-chosen model, ready to go for $10.5k; higher than some B5s out there, but the lower mileage and overall cleanliness make it worth it.

2001 Audi S4 Avant 6-Speed

Nate is one of our new authors on the website and this is his first post. Please welcome him and leave a comment! -dc

All-wheel drive.  Twin-turbo V6.  Six-speed.  Wagon.

The B5 S4 Avant holds a special place in my dream stable.  Understated sexiness and a wide range of capabilities make other dream cars seem unnecessary.  A grocery getter?  Sure.  A backroad blaster?  Definitely.  Mountain monster?  Born for it.  The twin-turbo V6 means it’s lighter, more efficient, and more easily tuned than the B6/7 V8 or the newborn B8 with its supercharged 3.0.  Add in a rare 6-speed, and this 2001 S4 for sale on eBay is what dreams are made of.

This example looks clean and well-loved.  It’s no spring chicken; these cars are coming up on being a decade old and it has the miles to prove it, but it should still have plenty of love left to give.  Upgraded brakes and suspension are intelligent and prudent modifications.

There isn’t much else to say other than I wish this had been under the Christmas tree this year!
