3 BMW e21 323i For Sale Listings: When Did These Become Valuable?

These little 6 cylinder, gray market import BMW’s are coming out of the woodwork all of the sudden. Of course at these prices I’d sell too!

First up is this 79 in Southern California on eBay. It is no reserve with 5 days to go, and only at $500 so far. 5 days is a while, but I think the result will give us an actual idea of what kind of premium the 6 cylinder car worth. This particular example looks good from most angles, but the paint and bodywork that is mentioned needs to be investigated. It has some older looking cloth Recaro’s that look like they’re worth saving, and the Panasport look-a-likes (are they real?) are a nice touch. The faux Alpina badging is not.

Next up is this 83 I spotted about a week ago on the San Francisco Craigslist (which by the way, is a gold mine for rare and affordable, cars and motorcycles). This car looks like it had a fanatical owner who loved the car for quite a while. It includes all the right performance upgrades that make the car better without loosing balance or class. This is a great looking prospect, but the asking price is $11k. Considering decent e36 M3’s trade hands for a bit more than this, I think the seller is a bit optimistic. But I’d have a hard time taking less if I were the owner considering the work in.

Finally this 82 323i came up on Roadfly this morning. It has 90k miles, looks fully federalized with the U.S. Bumpers, and the ad states that everything works. The current owner serviced the car since new as a BMW certified tech and has owned the car personally since 89. Talk about known history! His asking is $14.5k. It’s a nice car, but I guess I am still stubborn that this was e30 M3 money as little as 5 years ago. Again though, if I were the owner, I don’t know that I could let it go for less. Might as well keep it!

So do we have a surge or correction in the 323i market or just some proud owners? While significantly nicer than garden variety 320’s, are they that much nicer? Weigh in with your experience and leave a comment below.

1991 BMW e34 M5 in Alpine White

Alpine white on black leather. Does it get any better on an M car than this? I don’t think so either. This 1991 e34 M5 looks very clean for 104k miles, and if the documentation of upkeep holds up, $11k sounds like an absolute bargain for this legendary modern classic.

Listing on Roadfly for this 1991 BMW M5 in Alpine White in MA:

quote from Roadfly listing:

1991 BMW M5 The e34 M5 was a very special car. Each was hand built by a team of two skilled craftsmen. This one has been Garaged kept and is in excellent shape. It has 109K Miles. It is white with black leather interior. The car has upgraded Dinan supension, Dinan chip and cam gears. Absolutely Immaculate Interior and All power functions operational. A/C blows Strong and Cold. Extensive service history.

There are a lot of if’s when it comes to e34 M5’s, and there is homework that must be done for this car. But on the other hand, it wasn’t too long ago that cream puff e34 M5’s were in the $18-25k range. If it took a few thousand to get this car into really sharp condition, you’d still be ahead of the game.

2000 BMW M Coupe: Silver on Black with 72k miles

Not many M Coupe’s under $20k to be found these days. Check out this 2000 BMW M Coupe on Roadfly:

2000 BMW M Coupe For Sale Silver Georgia

excerpt from Roadfly listing:

New tires, factory CD & moonroof, tinted windows. Never raced, tracked, modified, or smoked in. Female-owned. Just inspected by BMW dealer, have report. BMW fog lights and subwoofer, heated seats, aftermarket xenon headlights. Car is in excellent mechanical shape, with regular synthetic oil changes. Scheduled 60K service performed last year at a cost over $1K, including all new fluids. Have all service records. Black leather interior. Car is very clean and if you didn’t know the mileage you’d guess it was a lot lower than 72.5K. If you’re reading this ad you know how rare these cars are, and this has to be one of the cleanest out there. If you haven’t driven one, you’re going to be amazed. Hate to sell this car, but need to make room for a new toy.

I like this car for under $20k. If maintenance and inspection check out, could be an easy buy.

1993 BMW e34 M5 For Sale: A 59k Mile Steal!

A black e34 M5 for $19k with 59k miles… What’s the catch?

Update 9.15.08: – Now ad $17.5k. Links updated.

1993 BMW e34 M5 For Sale in Black

quote from Roadfly listing:

Low mileage, well-maintained M5. Drivetrain is stock except for DINAN chip and UUC short shift kit. Near new Michelin Pilot tires and Rondel wheels ( 5 ). New BMW OEM catalytic converters. All fluids changed within last 6 months. Interior and exterior are 8/9 out of 10. Price is firm. Serious inquiries only, please.

The only thing I take issue with are the aftermarket rims, which are probably inferior to the OEM originals. If this is in fact a clean survivor with some records, $19k sounds like a steal to me considering I’ve seen comparable examples in the low to mid 20’s more often than not.

Update: This post is pretty out of date. Why not consider one of these BMW M5’s that is currently for sale?!

1982 BMW e28 Alpina B9 Clone

Here is an interesting car, and a damn fine looking one at that! It’s a gray market import that has been converted as an Alpina B9 tribute. It’s on eBay right now for $27k buy-it-now. Check out these beautiful pictures used in the listing:

1982 BMW Alpina B9 Clone For Sale1982 BMW Alpina B9 Clone For Sale1982 BMW Alpina B9 Clone For Sale

Excerpt from the eBay listing for this car:

This is a 1982 BMW E28 528i (euro car) built as a tribute to an Alpina B9 3.5. It is not a real Alpina. It is not a clone, as it has not been built to exact standards, using exact parts and processes as Alpina did when they built the real B9 3.5 cars. This car was built using some Alpina parts, some modern parts and some just plain reliable parts…along with a lot of blood, sweat and…money. The car is not perfect. It has imperfections. They will be listed in this essay. This car was in Bimmer Magazine # 56

A gentlemen in Newport Beach by the name of Ron Perry built 95% of this car. He pretty much did all the visual Alpina Tribute stuff that you see today. Ron worked endlessly on the paint finish, installing the Alpina stripe kit, Alpina replica front spoiler and real Alpina rear spoiler. Ron had fabric made to closely match the Alpina pattern and then had the interior recovered in it. Ron installed the Alpina instrument cluster, Alpina leather steering wheel, Alpina wood shift knob and Alpina dead pedal.

Ron then moved to the engine bay. The engine is a euro M30B34 bored and stroked to 3.7L using Venolia pistons. It has been updated to later Motronic running a 059 ECU. I had a custom chip burned to take into account the 3.7L, 284 cam, 19lbs injectors and big headers. The chip never really worked well and I went back to a stock 059 chip. The engine has been able to achieve the best drivability tune with the stock chip, thus no further work was done on another chip. The 3.7L chip is included with the sale.

The modifications aren’t necessarily all Alpina sourced, but are where they need to be to convince most people. And the modifications probably add up to over the $27k asking when you consider the specialty parts and pricey performance upgrades, like the rebuilt 3.7 stroker motor with upgraded cam, engine management, headers, and injectors. Or the authentic cosmetic Alpina add-on’s all over the car. This car is amazing!

However, I have some issues that I need to note. First is that the actual mileage of the car is unknown. On top of the fact that it is a recreation car and not an original, knowing if the car was a 30k, 150k, or 400k+ mile car would make it easier to put a price on. And finally, I personally think part of what makes vintage Alpina values hover in the 20’s and 30’s these days is that they are sought after by extreme enthusiasts that want the real thing. Like 2002tii buyers who will pay huge premiums over regular 02’s. And while this car is clearly an amazing piece of work with some very expensive additions, and wonderful execution, it is someone’s project car at the end of the day. $27k is probably what it is worth to the seller. Of course it’s always tough to put a price on a car like this. But in this case I think high teens is a more likely to fetch a buyer. But on the other hand, if I had this car and this much work invested, I wouldn’t be in a rush to sell it.

Update 9.15.08 – It’s still on eBay from the same seller, but the buy-it-now has fallen to $15k. This is sounding much more realistic. Good luck to the seller!

Here’s a link to a VWVortex thread made by the photographer that has lots more pictures with links to hi-res.

Update: This post is out of date and the item listed is probably not available any more. Why not take a look at these BMW Alpina’s and parts that are currently for sale!

1985 BMW e28 528 in White with Many Upgrades

Matt emailed me literally 5 minutes after I spotted his car for sale on Roadfly asking if I’d post it up. Of course I’d be happy to I replied. Especially one that has seen as much love as his has! It features a rebuilt motor, new paint, and a very long list of subtle performance upgrades that make this car look like a bargain at only $4500.

1995 BMW e36 M3: Clean and Original Cosmos

This seller’s model year, price, and mileage is almost identical to my old Alpine White e36 M3. But his is black on black, which is becoming increasingly rare, as is any unmolested e36 M3. The 95’s even more so because they’re still OBD-1 and easier to modify as a result. Take a look:

1995 BMW e36 M3 Cosmos Black on Roadfly for $13.5k (89k miles, Virginia):

All records
Upgraded water pump
Koni Adjustable dampers
Nicely upgraded stereo (Alpine)

This is an almost perfect example of one of BMWs best chassis. This M3 is just about flawless. You will not find a better example for an almost 15 year old M3. Very low mileage with all maintenance performed and up to date. I have a stack of receipts with the car.

Good looking car for the right money. Someone go snag this and continue taking care of it!

Alpine White BMW’s are so beautiful, and this e30 M3 looks great with the BBS rims, smoked tails, and Evo spoiler. While I might normally take objection with the black cloth Recaro’s against the stock tan leather interior, a well maintained car with 108k miles and a $16k asking makes me think the better of it. Looks like a really fun way into an appreciating modern classic while being able to drive it in the manner it was intended: At weekend auto-x’s, track days and back road blasts through the mountains!
