Right Hooker Week: 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLC180

The next Mercedes-Benz up for our Right Hooker Week is a total odd ball that never made it to North America and thank goodness it didn’t. This is a 2010 CLC180. Mercedes calls it a ”SportCoupé” that was an evolution of the W203 hatchback coupe that we (unfortunately) did get in North America. Naturally, when you look at this car you’d think it was a just W204 hatchback coupe. Not the case. In fact, it wasn’t even made in Germany. Let’s dig deeper.

This isn’t a W204, it is still a W203. Mercedes did everything in their power to make you think it was a new chassis, but it wasn’t. They tacked on a front and rear clip to make it look like a (then) new W204 but the majority of this car is still the old W203, especially inside. Yes, the car got a slightly tweaked suspension and a bunch of parts bin stuff for the interior, but it is still largely the same old car that launched over 10 years ago in 2000. What is even more interesting is that these were built in Juiz de Fora, Brazil where Mercedes has a factory that built the A-Class and you guessed it, the W203 C-Class. Powering this CLC180 is the M271 1.8 liter supercharged four cylinder that made a disappointing 143 horsepower. Not exactly something to write home about, but then again that wasn’t the goal with this car.

As for this specific example for sale in Surrey: it looks fine. Yeah, it has some stains on the seats and has a brand of tires tyres called Tigar that are made in Serbia, but it is what it is with this car. This is a seven year-old Mercedes for 4,990 ($6,469) and this is what you get. This was a first Mercedes for a lot of buyers and the brand was willing to take the hit on these to have the owners come back in three to five years to move up to buy an E-Class or ML-Class. The thing is, it worked pretty well. Mercedes said over 40 percent of buyers of these actually came back to move up to other models and frankly, I’m surprised. Personally if one of these were my only Mercedes experience, I’d want nothing to do with the brand after owning this thing, but then again maybe the opposite happened and people couldn’t wait to jump into an E-Class as soon as they could.

Double Take: Red E30 M3s

Ahh, red E30 M3s. Sure, these boxy bulldogs look good in just about any hue, but red as a symbol of lust and speed is not the exclusive property of the Italians. Red also plays an interesting part in the E30 M3’s history, as the striking, orange-tinted Hennarot was discontinued after one year in the US and supplanted by Zinnoberrot, a deeper and more classic hue. Both are beautiful in their own right, but Hennarot’s intensity and rarity has elicited more fandom and desire in an already-vociferous market.

Today we have two beautiful M3s from the same seller and in the same price range, each a shining example of its chosen red with a couple of unique touches.

1967 Puma GTE

Volkswagen specials are nothing new; cheap, reliable and easy to obtain parts, the basic construction of the original Beetle has been the basis for numerous custom hot rods and replicas. One of the more interesting, though, didn’t come from Germany at all. Built from the remnants of the DKW-Vemag custom business in Brazil of making modified DKWs, Puma was launched in 1967 now with Volkswagen underpinnings instead of the now Volkswagen subsidiary DKW. The look of the new coupe – dubbed the 1600 GTE – was reportedly based upon the Lamborghini Miura, though hints of other Italian exotics certainly show through. Still, as with most of these customs, finding a nice one you’d actually drive it pretty unlikely. But the seller of this custom custom went to great lengths to mimic Ferrari inspiration, and I have to say the results are impressive:

Heap of the Week: 1974 Volkswagen SP2

Recently, a Facebook fanpage called Flussig Magazine – centering on watercooled Porsches – did an interesting comparison of side drawings comparing the 944, Ferrari 365 GTB/4, and Volkswagen SP2. While that may sound like a very interesting assortment of unrelated cars, the reality is if you put them side by side, there are pretty similar profiles to the designs. That’s a big compliment to the much more affordable Volkswagen and Porsche models, though the SP2 is a rare to see treat. There are very few kicking around the U.S., and while you can import one here it’s not the most common model to bring here. Is it worth it, then, if there’s one already here that needs some work?

Seeing Double: Two rare 1968 BMW 1600 GTs for sale

It’s always fun to find some strange on eBay motors. Today’s oddities come in the form of the petite and rare BMW 1600 GT, the product of BMW acquiring funky scooter- and car-maker Glas for their patents. They liked the look of the Glas 1700GT, threw in the 2.0L from the 2002-preceding 1600, and boom, a BMW 1600 GT looking like the bastard child of 60s-era Audi and Fiat. They’re cute bastards though, and could be a fun piece of BMW weirdness if you felt like shipping one of them from Brazil.

The seller’s description for the silver:

I’m selling a very rare BMW 1600 GT designed by Pietro Frua for Hans Glas from the Glas Factory in Digolfing-Germany. Hans Glas was a famous owner of the Glas factory and was producing the Gogomobile cars, and the Glas 1300 and 1700 designed by Pietro Frua ( Maserati, Rolls Royce Corniche, and other cars designer). When BMW bought the factory from Hans Glas, the engineers looked at the Glas 1700, changed the engine for the BMW 1600 and renamed the car as BMW 1600 GT.
Only 1209 cars were made. Today it is the car that collectors and museums dream of.

The car has the matching numbers engine, run and drive very well, just restaured car. The BMW 1600 GT is restaured with some features like the new inox gas tank, red original new leather, new Continental EcoContact 3 175/70 R 14 84T tyres, window chromes are not re-chromed (originals), and paint has a little dots.

The silver is clearly the nicer version, especially inside, though I’m guessing a lot of the extra $20k on the price is for the numbers-matching collector bait. Cute cars and one would definitely be a fun vintage kind-of-Bimmer to cruise around in, but $40-$60k before transcontinental shipping makes them more of a fun thought experiment than a reasonable purchase.
