Earlier this week I checked out 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC in a vivid Signal Red for sale outside of London. I explained that even though I don’t really love red on Mercedes in general, certain models actually pull the color off pretty well. Today, we have another 560SEC in red although this one is a little more subdued with the shade of Garnet Red. In case you missed the title on this car, this SEC has a mere 15,400 miles on it. But the price? Oh boy, I hope you are sitting down. Maybe grab a glass of water, too.

1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

I go back and forth on red Mercedes-Benz. On certain models like the SL, I think the color suits the car quite well. On sedans, I generally despise it. Coupes? Well, it can go either way in my eyes. This car, a 1989 560SEC for sale near London, I’m actually a fan of. Painted in Signal Red, this Bruno Sacco designed coupe is a lot of red to take in, but it’s far from garish in my opinion. Granted, the European-spec C126 looks really good in any color and Sacco himself that it is one of his favorite designs (outside of the door handles that he lost the battle with the engineers over). I must admit, I can’t argue with him.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 ‘Hammer Tribute’

Last week I checked out a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL that was styled after the legendary ”Hammer” from AMG. Notice I said styled and not another word because it was exactly that, styled. It looked amazing, as most people agreed, but under the hood was the stock 5.0 liter M117 V8 that wasn’t touched by AMG. Today, we have a different kind of tribute car that still isn’t the real thing, but has a lot more power over stock and still looks just as good.

This is a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Coupe with a 3.6 liter M104 inline-6 engine from AMG swapped in. To go even further, this car has fenders from the legendary W124 500E grafted onto it for that extra wide look that every loves. And just one more thing while I’m at it, it has a 5-speed manual transmission too.

2002 Audi TT Coupe 225 quattro ALMS Edition

If the minor nomenclature differences between what constitutes a BMW with sport items, a Sport model, and a M-Sport model can be confusing, the ordering of model designation in Audi’s TT lineup is downright infuriating. Technically, I think the correct order for the model is as shown above – Audi TT Coupe 225 quattro ALMS Edition.

Maybe.

And here’s the trick. First you needed to differentiate if you ordered a Coupe or Roadster. In 2002, you could get a front-drive coupe with the 180 horsepower engine, and you could also get the 180 horsepower motor with optional Haldex quattro all-wheel drive. But if you selected a Roadster, you couldn’t get a 180 quattro. Now, if you went for the upgraded 225 horsepower motor, you automatically got quattro – there was no front-drive option. That makes the “quattro” moniker after any 225 model redundant. Even more redundant in this case is the “Coupe” moniker, because if you opted for the ALMS appearance package in the 2002 model year, the hardtop was your only choice. So if you referred to this as a TT ALMS – as many do – the rest would follow – you’ve got by default a 6-speed manual 225 horsepower quattro Coupe. For many, this makes the ALMS one of the most desirable 8N TTs, and the limited run of 1,000 examples in either Misano Red Pearl with Silver Gray Nappa leather or, as show here Avus Silver Pearl with contrasting Brilliant Red Leather tends to command a premium over other examples of the first-gen Golf-based model:

Tuner Tuesday: 1997 Mercedes-Benz CL600 Brabus 7.3S

Last week I checked out a great SL73 AMG which the mad men at AMG took an already hearty 6.0 liter V12 and converted it to a 7.3 liter. Today we have another 7.3 liter 140 chassis, although this one was converted by another tuning house. This 1997 CL600 for sale in Hamburg, Germany was sent to well-known Brabus where it not only underwent the conversion to 7.3 liters, but gained some body work, wheels and giant brakes as well. Because of all this, the price tag steep. But you probably won’t believe how steep it really is.

1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

Earlier this week, I checked out one of the nicest W126s I’ve seen in a while with a 1987 560SEL. Today, we have another 1987 560, although this one is the brother car, the SEC. These big body coupes have been shooting up in value of late, but they are still well within reasonable range to grab at a decent price if you wish. Of course, color and condition are the biggest factor in what these sell for, but if you can find one that is well looked after and doesn’t carry a crazy price tag, then it is not a bad way to spend your money. If you are lucky enough to run across an example as nice as this C126 for sale in California, then I wouldn’t sleep on it at all.

1995 Porsche 968 with 8,200 Miles

At the beginning of the 1990s, pretty much everyone was stepping away from twin-cam inline-4s. While they had been the rage in the 80s and “DOHC” was nearly as popular as Miami Vice, buyers demanded more power and refinement. Sure, you could make 200 horsepower from a high-strung four-pot; but making it tractable for daily driving, passing emissions, and reliable? That was another ball-game. As a result, most major manufacturers went to larger displacement 6- or 8-cylinder motors in their small performance cars.

Everyone, that is, except for Porsche.

Porsche dialed in the 944S2 a bit more with updated 928-inspired looks and a new ‘VarioCam’ adjustable valve timing on the 3-liter inline-4. Now with 237 horsepower and an impressive 225 lb.ft of torque, it roamed the sports car elite field like a small dinosaur. Porsche added another speed to the mix, but since this was a relatively expensive 4-banger coupe based on a twenty year old design, they didn’t sell particularly well. A total of 2,234 Coupes were imported between 1992 and 1995; the last year was the worst seller, with a scant 259 making the journey. This particular last-year example may just be the best one left in the country:

2008 Audi R8

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the introduction of Audi’s supercar-scaring R8. It really was a bit of a leap for the company which typically mastered unsteer-laden sedans to jump into a mid-engine, rear-biased all out sports car, but when they put their mind to it they sure did an impressive job. The design built off existing themes in Audi’s show car history such as the Spyder and Avus concepts of the 90s, but the real foundation work was laid with the twin-turbo Lamborghini V10-powered LeMans quattro show car in 2003. Of course, such a crazy concept would never come to fruition, right?

Fast forward only three years later and the road-ready and newly coined “R8” was brought to the market. Architecture was heavily borrowed from existing models within the company’s umbrella; the basic platform was shared with the Audi-owned Lamborghini Gallardo, while the initial engine came from the RS4 in the form of the 4.2 liter, all-aluminum FSI V8. At 414 horsepower, it might not have given a 599GTB driver much concern, but it surely gave the crew heading into Porsche dealers pause.

From the get-go, journalists swooned over the performance and dynamics of the R8. It was lauded as one of the best packages you could buy – even Clarkson liked it! Even before the mega-V10 model rolled out for 2009’s model year, the 4.2 offered blistering performance in a budget (for the market) package. 0-60 was gone in 4.6 second, the standing quarter in 12.5 and it’d do nearly 190 mph flat-out – at least, that’s what Audi claimed. Car and Driver eclipsed the 60 mark in 4.0 seconds in theirs. At around $120,000 new with some options, the R8 was more dear than any Audi had ever hit market.

But there was something even more odd and unique that this car did, or rather, didn’t do, and it’s one of the main reasons I don’t often write them up. It didn’t fall in value. If you bought a well equipped, V10-engined S8 in 2007, you’d shell out about the same money – $110,000. Today? Less than 20 grand. But the R8 was the first modern Audi not to fall victim to depreciation. Lower mile examples of the early models are still asking over $70,000 – sometimes well over $80,000. So something struck me when I spotted this ’08 – it was cheap. In fact, it was the cheapest R8 I could find on the market. Does that make it a good buy?

1985 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

Now that I’ve looked at some cool and not so cool Mercedes from across the pond, I’m back to our regular left-hand drive cars. Fear not for our international readers as I’m not back to the United States just yet. This 1985 300CD from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada gives us the best of what the W123 coupe has to offer. Much like the other prime W123s for sale, this one isn’t coming cheap, but I’d argue that it’s not exactly the worst deal in the world for what you get.

Taking a broad look at this car, this one looks like a real winner. Extremely clean without any issues I can see on the outside, the interior looks even better. The Sienna MB-Tex is relatively rare for any W123 let alone a coupe and I’m glad to see it’s held up great for 56,000 miles. Under the hood, the OM617 looks prime with lots of cadmium plating still fresh. Being a 1985 W123, the last year of the chassis, it benefits greatly from a 2.88 rear differential as opposed to a 3.07. This translates to much better highway miles per gallon figures to the point where owners of prior year W123s seek out 1985 cars to swap in the differential.

At $14,500 CDN ($11,319 USD), it is probably priced on the higher end of the market in general. But being in a snowy Canadian city where these cars are pretty rare in this condition, I don’t blame the seller for asking this price. If you want close to the best, you are going to have to pay for it and that is the case with this one. I doubt this one will sell quickly, but I’d imagine if the buyer softened the price up a little, it will make a new owner very happy.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 300CE

Last week I check out a CLK55 AMG and felt like it was missing something. Not only was it missing something but it had a different feel from Mercedes coupes of the past. I understand it though, it was a transition from an era of analog to a launch of much more modern renditions. From the W124 to W210, the W140 to W220 and even the W202 to W203. All those cars looked and felt significantly different. You saw the line in the sand when everything changed. But I can’t blame them nor should anyone else. Evolution is a thing with cars and if you don’t, you’ll be eaten alive by competitors. Suddenly your legacy buyers who have owned your cars for 25 years have jumped shipped for Lexus.

But the good thing is that you can always go home. And for a lot of people, the W124 is home. It was the perfect mix of old school Mercedes but you still got modern features. For some, the W124 coupe is that perfect home feeling.

The 300CE coupe was based on the W124 E-Class and has a slightly shorter wheelbase than its sedan sibling. This car’s Dark Gray exterior paint is set off by its light gray body cladding that was recently repainted to factory spec for over $4k. The car’s window tint was a factory option. There is no rust.

The original windshield is free of chips, cracks or scratches. The tires are Yokohama with about 2K miles on them and 80% tread remaining. This car has the correct 15-hole 6.5” x 15” wheels, with the correct offset which are in factory condition. One small crack in the front bumper is shown in the photos and the sunroof needs new rails quoted at $650. Personal inspection of this car is welcome and encouraged by the seller.

All exterior lighting, including headlights, turn signals, parking lights and taillights reportedly work as they should. The car starts easily, runs well and the transmission operates smoothly. The four-wheel disc brakes are in good condition and the car stops well and straight. The struts and shocks were recently replaced in full and are ready to be driven. Mercedes four-speed automatics of this era start out in second gear when the selector is in “Drive,” first gear when the selector is in “3.”

The gray leather upholstery is in good condition, including the floor carpeting. The leather seats show some wear, but there are no holes, tears or split seams. The telescoping steering column works properly, along with all interior lighting and instruments; all latches and locks operate as they should, including the power door locks and headlight wipers.

The dash is free of cracks and the console wood is in good condition, adding that the door panels and headliner are clean and the tilt up/sliding power sunroof and its air deflector need new rails which is quoted at $650 to replace. The front and rear seatbelts work. In the area where the seat belts retract, the triangle-shaped trim pieces are in good condition. All weatherstripping is intact. The A/C currently blows cold and heats hot. No issues at all.

The odometer reads 183,798 miles and is well documented and correct; the service records support the mileage. The speedo goes up to 160 mph, but the rated top speed is 140 mph. The third brake light housing is fully functioning. The original Becker headunit comes with 10-disc trunk mounted Sony CD Player – fully functioning, a great throwback feature. The stereo sounds nice and the power antenna works as it should. The rear headrests have a feature that flops them back for better rear visibility; the vacuum-operated control switch reportedly works. Automatic temperature controls work for heat; high, auto and low fan speeds work.

The 3.0L DOHC fuel-injected inline six-cylinder M103 engine is rated at 179 hp @5700 rpm and torque of 188 ft•lbf @4400 rpm; the curb weight is listed at 3,594 lbs. The engine is original and is in great condition.

The underside is rust-free, with no evidence of rust repairs. The suspension has coil springs and telescopic shocks in front and five-link independent suspension in the rear. All components on this car are said to operate as they should, as do the 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS. The exhaust system was recently replaced with original Mercedes-Benz exhaust from another W124 by my mechanic, but it’s tight and sounds stock. Much better than before!

The original owners manual, maintenance booklet and owner’s recent service’s are included, as are the jack and Mercedes tool kit. Two keys are included. Along with the factory spare, there is a bike rack, car cover. Receipts for all recent repairs will come with the car. Past and recent receipts show mileage consistently and support the 184,xxx miles shown on the odometer. The seller has put around 10k on it and wouldn’t hesitate driving it across the country, and says that a new buyer could drive it home. This car had a $54,880 MSRP when new and was one of 2,318 imported to the U.S. that year. This one is sold with a clear California title.

The seller does a great job of explaining everything to you on this 1990 300CE. It’s well maintained and ready for a new owner without too much fuss. The miles are a little on the higher side but that is nothing to scare you away with the tried and true M104. This is a great color combination and the chrome wheels are a nice touch. At $6,500, you probably aren’t going to lose any more in long-term with this car. In my opinion, clean C124s starting to become desirable and it is pretty clear these aren’t going to get any cheaper. This is a car you can enjoy on an everyday basis without too much worry and have that older Mercedes feeling but still cruise with piece of mind that you’ll be comfortable.
