1985 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

Now that I’ve looked at some cool and not so cool Mercedes from across the pond, I’m back to our regular left-hand drive cars. Fear not for our international readers as I’m not back to the United States just yet. This 1985 300CD from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada gives us the best of what the W123 coupe has to offer. Much like the other prime W123s for sale, this one isn’t coming cheap, but I’d argue that it’s not exactly the worst deal in the world for what you get.

Taking a broad look at this car, this one looks like a real winner. Extremely clean without any issues I can see on the outside, the interior looks even better. The Sienna MB-Tex is relatively rare for any W123 let alone a coupe and I’m glad to see it’s held up great for 56,000 miles. Under the hood, the OM617 looks prime with lots of cadmium plating still fresh. Being a 1985 W123, the last year of the chassis, it benefits greatly from a 2.88 rear differential as opposed to a 3.07. This translates to much better highway miles per gallon figures to the point where owners of prior year W123s seek out 1985 cars to swap in the differential.

At $14,500 CDN ($11,319 USD), it is probably priced on the higher end of the market in general. But being in a snowy Canadian city where these cars are pretty rare in this condition, I don’t blame the seller for asking this price. If you want close to the best, you are going to have to pay for it and that is the case with this one. I doubt this one will sell quickly, but I’d imagine if the buyer softened the price up a little, it will make a new owner very happy.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 300CE

Last week I check out a CLK55 AMG and felt like it was missing something. Not only was it missing something but it had a different feel from Mercedes coupes of the past. I understand it though, it was a transition from an era of analog to a launch of much more modern renditions. From the W124 to W210, the W140 to W220 and even the W202 to W203. All those cars looked and felt significantly different. You saw the line in the sand when everything changed. But I can’t blame them nor should anyone else. Evolution is a thing with cars and if you don’t, you’ll be eaten alive by competitors. Suddenly your legacy buyers who have owned your cars for 25 years have jumped shipped for Lexus.

But the good thing is that you can always go home. And for a lot of people, the W124 is home. It was the perfect mix of old school Mercedes but you still got modern features. For some, the W124 coupe is that perfect home feeling.

The 300CE coupe was based on the W124 E-Class and has a slightly shorter wheelbase than its sedan sibling. This car’s Dark Gray exterior paint is set off by its light gray body cladding that was recently repainted to factory spec for over $4k. The car’s window tint was a factory option. There is no rust.

The original windshield is free of chips, cracks or scratches. The tires are Yokohama with about 2K miles on them and 80% tread remaining. This car has the correct 15-hole 6.5” x 15” wheels, with the correct offset which are in factory condition. One small crack in the front bumper is shown in the photos and the sunroof needs new rails quoted at $650. Personal inspection of this car is welcome and encouraged by the seller.

All exterior lighting, including headlights, turn signals, parking lights and taillights reportedly work as they should. The car starts easily, runs well and the transmission operates smoothly. The four-wheel disc brakes are in good condition and the car stops well and straight. The struts and shocks were recently replaced in full and are ready to be driven. Mercedes four-speed automatics of this era start out in second gear when the selector is in “Drive,” first gear when the selector is in “3.”

The gray leather upholstery is in good condition, including the floor carpeting. The leather seats show some wear, but there are no holes, tears or split seams. The telescoping steering column works properly, along with all interior lighting and instruments; all latches and locks operate as they should, including the power door locks and headlight wipers.

The dash is free of cracks and the console wood is in good condition, adding that the door panels and headliner are clean and the tilt up/sliding power sunroof and its air deflector need new rails which is quoted at $650 to replace. The front and rear seatbelts work. In the area where the seat belts retract, the triangle-shaped trim pieces are in good condition. All weatherstripping is intact. The A/C currently blows cold and heats hot. No issues at all.

The odometer reads 183,798 miles and is well documented and correct; the service records support the mileage. The speedo goes up to 160 mph, but the rated top speed is 140 mph. The third brake light housing is fully functioning. The original Becker headunit comes with 10-disc trunk mounted Sony CD Player – fully functioning, a great throwback feature. The stereo sounds nice and the power antenna works as it should. The rear headrests have a feature that flops them back for better rear visibility; the vacuum-operated control switch reportedly works. Automatic temperature controls work for heat; high, auto and low fan speeds work.

The 3.0L DOHC fuel-injected inline six-cylinder M103 engine is rated at 179 hp @5700 rpm and torque of 188 ft•lbf @4400 rpm; the curb weight is listed at 3,594 lbs. The engine is original and is in great condition.

The underside is rust-free, with no evidence of rust repairs. The suspension has coil springs and telescopic shocks in front and five-link independent suspension in the rear. All components on this car are said to operate as they should, as do the 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS. The exhaust system was recently replaced with original Mercedes-Benz exhaust from another W124 by my mechanic, but it’s tight and sounds stock. Much better than before!

The original owners manual, maintenance booklet and owner’s recent service’s are included, as are the jack and Mercedes tool kit. Two keys are included. Along with the factory spare, there is a bike rack, car cover. Receipts for all recent repairs will come with the car. Past and recent receipts show mileage consistently and support the 184,xxx miles shown on the odometer. The seller has put around 10k on it and wouldn’t hesitate driving it across the country, and says that a new buyer could drive it home. This car had a $54,880 MSRP when new and was one of 2,318 imported to the U.S. that year. This one is sold with a clear California title.

The seller does a great job of explaining everything to you on this 1990 300CE. It’s well maintained and ready for a new owner without too much fuss. The miles are a little on the higher side but that is nothing to scare you away with the tried and true M104. This is a great color combination and the chrome wheels are a nice touch. At $6,500, you probably aren’t going to lose any more in long-term with this car. In my opinion, clean C124s starting to become desirable and it is pretty clear these aren’t going to get any cheaper. This is a car you can enjoy on an everyday basis without too much worry and have that older Mercedes feeling but still cruise with piece of mind that you’ll be comfortable.

1986 Audi Coupe GT with 3,390 Miles

If yesterday’s 76,000 mile Audi Coupe GT was impressive, today’s example is close to unbelievable. Yet here it is – a 1986 model with a scant 3,390 miles showing on the odometer. You’re probably used to seeing very low mile Porsche 911 models, and occasionally we see similar time capsule Mercedes-Benz or BMWs – but nearly never an Audi. Once again, it would be simple to default to the ‘broken odometer’ argument, but the evidence does seem to mount that this might be a fully original example. Welcome, then, to what is as close to a museum-quality example of a Coupe GT as might exist in the U.S.:

1963 BMW 700 Coupe

After yesterday’s mega M6, I’d like to take a look at another favorite BMW coupe of mine. In many ways, it is the antithesis of the M6; simple, under-powered, rear-engine and decidedly ’60s while the M6 was oh-so-’80s. The 700 Coupe developed through an interesting route, as I described in an article for The Truth About Cars. While air-cooled power was associated with VW and Porsche, NSU and BMW also flirted with rear-engine designs of their own, and in their own right they were fairly successful.

From the diminutive Isetta grew the oddly-shaped 600, which then bore the 700 run. Available in 2-door sedan, Coupe or rare convertible, the 700 developed some 30 horsepower from its .7 liter twin in the rear. The handsome Michelotti design signaled the direction for the new BMW designs, with (for the time) modern lines penned to the standard 3-box formula. A total of nearly 200,000 700s were produced, but the Coupe version sold in much smaller numbers – only about 30,000 total Coupes produced. The departed from the more traditional 2-door sedan’s look with a sharply cut greenhouse and pronounced tail fins. While the combination of all these things seems like an odd recipe, it somehow worked very well and looked beautiful:

2009 Maybach 57S Coupe

A little over a year ago I examined a 2008 Maybach 57S and explained why I thought it was one of the worst cars you can probably buy in terms of well … everything. Today I’m checking out another Mayback 57S and you may have noticed that this one looks a little different. What you are looking at is one of nine 57S Coupes ever produced. Now Mercedes-Benz and Maybach never officially produced a 57S Coupe but rather German coachbuilder Xenatec stepped in with the blessing from Mercedes and undertook this massive job. Xenatec orginally planned to produce somewhere between 100 to 200 of these 57S Coupes but operations ceased after Maybach sedan sales fell flat and maybe the market for a $930,000(!) luxury coupe wasn’t as big as they projected. Seriously, these cost over $900,000 when the sedan sold for a little more than $400,000. When looking at this monster, you can see that no corners were cut in this conversion as everything looks exactly what you’d expect from a production car outside of the lower front grill that looks a little suspect in the styling department. So what do you make of this thing? Another failed experiment or something to be treasured as an example of rare ultra-luxury?

Maybach 57 S coupé – luxurious exclusivity. As only 9 units were built, this coupé is one of the rarest, most unusual vehicles ever to have been produced in the history of this ultra-luxury-class vehicle segment.

Despite the fact that the Maybach 57S loses two doors as a coupé, it is still a four-seater. However, the A B and C pillars as well as the doors and the car wings were modified for the Maybach coupé. The B-pillar was pushed back 20 centimetres towards to the rear to enable back seat passengers to climb in easily.

The conversion of the rear sides increased the width of the Maybach coupé by 20 centimetres. The extended wheelhouse has 20 inch alloy wheels in a new design. The coupé conversion is rounded off by sporty skirts at the front and rear, new rear lights and an exhaust pipe in a new exhaust pipe shape.

In contrast, no change was made to the wheelbase at 3.39 metres nor to the entire drive shaft with its 612 hp and 1,000 Nm six-litre biturbo V12 engine. The Maybach 57S accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 5.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 275 km/h.

I really can’t get over how well they nailed the design of this car. The rear end of this car looks perfect in my opinion as they ditched the full length taillight and went with more of a CL-Class style with two separate pieces. The rear sears are crafted perfectly and they even went all out with the cooler in between them. They even left the three gauges on the roof so the rear passengers could see what is going on. You kind of understand why this car cost so much.

When you think about it, Xenatec was really onto something here. These came out before the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe and Bentley Brooklands were available but again, I think the problem was the price. You had people more than willing to pay the $400,000 for a Phantom Coupe but $900,000 for a car that still gives you flashbacks to the W220, not matter how well you tried to hide it, probably wasn’t going to work. The only reason I could see someone ponying up for these is the exclusivity because well, everyone has a Phantom Coupe or Drophead in Monaco but no one has the 57S Coupe. This explains why you see things like the Mega Track running around there even though it is a really odd car to have in the south of France.

Probably one of the most surprising things to me is that the seller, Mechatronik, actually had another one of these for sale as well. That was 2007 in black with tan interior that I preferred much more than this white one. Neither of these cars had prices listed but if I had to guess, I would say they aren’t too far away from that magical $1,000,000 mark. This of course seems insane seeing are you can buy the sedan version for $65,000 but it’s all about the price of exclusivity. You are paying for being one of nine (which I have my doubts on that there are only nine) and that is well worth it for some.

2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S

Porsche (and Tom Cruise in Risky Business) proudly tout that “there is no substitute” for their cars. In my opinion, they probably aren’t all that wrong. If you want a German two-door car, a 911 is a never a bad choice. But what if you wanted something that did basically all the same things as a 911 but just in a different package? Not a substitute per say, but just a different kind of German two-door car. This is where the Mercedes-AMG GT S comes in.

The GT S from AMG is standalone model (not an AMG version of a pedestrian model) that combines low slung styling with a 0-60 time in about 3.5 seconds. It only seats two and unlike the 911 is front engined, but that doesn’t hurt this car one bit — at least in my eyes.

In my opinion, the GT S is probably the most least talked about models for sale today. I want to make sure not to say underrated because everyone who drives one of these ends up raving about it. It just seems to me that this is a car that no one really goes crazy for. You don’t see them everywhere like a 911 but when you do the reaction usually goes something like “Oh wow, there is a GT S. I almost forgot about those”. They surely don’t look that boring and the value for money is actually really good, so what gives?

It is certainly not the car’s fault, that is for sure. This 2016 for sale in Miami is a great example of how these cars really are. I’m not crazy about the contrasting interior, but it is something I could live it. Everything else looks to be in great shape outside of some dirty wheels. White shows off these body lines well and I’m still getting over how great those taillights look.

It was no coincidence that Mercedes-AMG priced these in the low to mid-100,000 range to fight directly with the 911 and used prices have stayed right along the 911 curve too. I am really curious to see what happens to values on these cars down the road because they aren’t like just an AMG version of a regular Mercedes car. Historically, cars like these have done fairly well when it comes to deprecation and hanging on to value, but this car is an entire different ballgame because of its production numbers. There is also the little thing of the GT R landing on the shores soon that might effect values a little bit since the GT S has been taken down a notch. That shouldn’t stop anyone from trying one of these cars when they are 911 shopping because this really isn’t substitute, but rather a different kind of experience.

1987 Volkswagen Jetta Coupe with 5,581 Miles

In 1987, there were quite a few Jettas to like (as Jettas go, that is). If you absolutely had to have a trunk, you could grab a turbo diesel for its last year until the 1990 Ecodiesel arrived. The “GL” trim package gave you power options like windows, mirrors, locks, and even a power antenna – remember when breaking antennas off cars was a hoodlum pastime? Your GL would even come with a ski sack! There was the new Wolfsburg Edition, which gave you all the options of the GLI without sport seats – so you got the special Pirelli P-slot wheels, deeper spoilers, and even a power bump to 105. Did I mention the GLI? For good measure, there were two that year, with the 8V bowing out to the incoming 16V model.

This car is not any of those trim levels, though. This is a plain-jane Jetta; steel wheels, the lowest power available, and manual everything (except, predictably, the transmission). So why look at it? Well, two reasons – and they both open. Oh, and it only has 5,581 miles, too.

1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SE Coupe

Earlier this week on Monday I looked at 1993 600SL in Spruce Green only to follow it up with a 2004 CL600 in Everest Green. To close out the week, I’d thought I’d finish up with another green machine, although this one is quite a bid older than the prior examples. This 1967 250SE Coupe for sale Missouri is a wonderful example of the design and craftsmanship that Mercedes-Benz was all about during this era. Lots of chrome, lots of leather and lots of wood. These coupes were the perfect blend of conservative style that’s still noticeable without being totally outrageous and in your face (I’m looking at you Cadillac Coupe DeVille) So let’s go check out the details of the W111.

This is a truly lovely coupe. The chrome is as good as you can get and the interior woodwork is outstanding. I’m a sucker for any Mercedes with a wood binnacle and this one is nearly flawless. The dark green leather and carpet really matches the rest of the car well and is a nice different look than what is usually seen. The only thing I see wrong is that horrible radio. I don’t know what goes through people’s heads when they take out original Becker units and replace them with cheap-looking units that look totally out-of-place. It blows my mind that people will ruin the entire look of a car’s interior just to listen to two tracks of some CD. You think when whoever went through this car to do the refresh would have sourced an original radio to reinstall, but maybe there is another reason.

The 250 Coupe isn’t as pricey as the later 280 or even more rare 280 3.5 with the M116 V8. My thought is that these cars are all about styling and appearance anyway. It doesn’t matter what engine is in them, you are still going to look at them the same way. The M129 straight-six is a perfectly fine motor for this car and shouldn’t be discredited at all for not being the 2.8 liter M130. The price for this car is just under $57,000 and I’d say that probably is a little high for this specific example. I have a feeling this dealer overpriced its cars and waits it out just because they can afford to do that. It’d be more comfortable somewhere in the $45,000 to $50,000 range but I wouldn’t say you got ripped off if you paid this asking price. These aren’t depreciating anytime soon but I’m not sure it will ever rise to be a six-figure car — not with the 280 and 3.5 ahead of it.

1984 Volkswagen Jetta

The Volkswagen Jetta, for most, isn’t the most exciting vehicle. Nor, if I’m honest, was it the most exciting Volkswagen product in 1984. In the hierarchy of collectable Volkswagens from that year, in fact, I’d wager that a stock 1984 Jetta comes just about last in a ranking of desirability within the brand’s lineup. Beyond the fact that there was a GLI high performance model, there was the Scirocco, the Rabbit Convertible, the GTI, and of course the popular Vanagon. Heck, I’d bet there’d be a bigger draw around a clean Quantum than a Jetta.

Okay, maybe that last one was a step too far. The Jetta, even if it’s not the fastest or best looking Volkswagen product, still has quite a devoted following in each generation – and those that love the A1 don’t exactly have a glut of examples to choose from. When they’re found, they’re usually forlorn as the residual value on standard Jettas has remained so low in comparison to other models. You’re not likely to find a clean example even with needs. But a restored and rebuilt model? Surely that would just be too expensive to even contemplate?

Green with Evny: 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

I’ve confessed my love for green cars before and today’s featured vehicle is no different. This 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300CD in Moss Green up for sale in Florida combines my favorite color with one of my favorite cars in the W123. It’s not often that I see a Moss Green car come up for sale and even better, the interior is green as well.

I have owned these cars for over 10 years. I scour the country daily for them and of all that I have ever owned this is the coolest most unique 300CD. It might have been a one off special order. I have never ever seen the color combination in a turbo diesel. Moss green with green interior. The car is completely original and the paint is exeptional. It shines as new and there are only two dings that I can find. Quarter sized and likely removable. The paint is 100 percent original. No accidents ever. The rims have no curb rash and the tires are matching with plenty of tread. The glass is all original and excellent with the exception of the rear window. The defrost has left a green blob at the bottom. Not visible when driving but from the outside is noticeable but not crazy offensive. I would change it. The interior is nearly flawless with the exception of two wood pieces readily available on eBay. There is also a small tear in the armrest easily repairable and the window switches are worn. I will include two switches that are mercedes and in excellent shape. I cant overstate how nice the car is. The last one I sold for 20k was not as nice. The car has stacks of mechanical records and was purchased here in Florida at Lokey Mercedes. It has been fully serviced from day one. I have thousands in service records. There are no shimmys or rattles or shakes. The climate control works as it should. It even blows out of the center vents. Only about 1 in 10 do. The transmission shifts as softly as any I have felt. The last great one I owned had 50k miles on it. I am more disappointed to have to sell this one than that. This car feels as good as any I have ever had. This car will likely sell by Monday so if you are looking for a collector quality 300CD in the very coolest and rarest of colors grab it. No disappointments here.

This W123 is probably one of the better ones I’ve seen come up for sale except for one big thing: the shifter wood surround is destroyed. I don’t understand, the rest of this car shows great for 186,000 miles and is probably going to fetch a hefty price tag. Why not spend the few hundred to find a clean piece of replacement wood to finish off the interior to make it really outstanding? That just seems really odd to me. Otherwise, the green MB-tex is very rare and I can probably count on two hands on how many I’ve seen in this color. I’m glad it is in a car this nice and hasn’t been neglected by someone who just wants to drive the wheels off this car.

I’m really curious to see where the bidding ends up for this car. Generally, the W123 coupe has always brought a premium over sedans and this one should follow that trend. It being a Florida car and the condition it is in, even with the bad wood, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it crack $10,000. You don’t see a combination like this one come up for sale often, even at all, so this one has potential to be a nice payday for the seller.
