1996 BMW 850CSi with 16,500 miles

Almost exactly one month ago I took a look at a pristine midnight blue 850CSi with a seemingly low 70,000 miles on the clock. I was reminded of how great the 850 looked in its ultimate form, a super cruiser in the grandest sense. Today there is another of these super GTs for sale on Ebay, and this one might take the cake for lowest mile example I’ve seen in a long, long time – this particular example has only covered a claimed 16,450 miles. I’m not sure why or how you buy such a car and drive it so little, but let’s take a look:

10K Friday: Stanced or Stock? BMW 540i 6-speed v. BMW 540i 6-speed

I’m guessing probably most of you feel the way I do about “stanced” cars, but will today’s 10K Friday contestants make you give pause to consider one? The BMW 540i is a favorite here at GCFSB; you get most of the M5’s performance at a lower price! The best of the bunch are the 6-speed variants, and while there aren’t any of the coveted “M-sport” versions appearing today I think it’s still an interesting face-off. Today we have a “stance” modified 1995 E34 against a stock 2001 E39; which would you choose? Let’s start with the lowrider:

So apart from a poor use of the letter “E” and atrocious overall spelling, this is an interesting car. It’s important to remember you’re not buying the seller when looking at these cars. What we have, then, is a manual converted 540i that has been lowered with what appears to be a trick coilover system and a rather silly looking exhaust. Otherwise, it wears some cheaper imitation BBS RSs and looks pretty spectacular in black over black. Raise the ride height a bit more in the front and a bit less in the rear and tone down that exhaust, and I don’t really see much of anything wrong here. But if Stance Nation scares you, there’s always stock to consider:

The E39 is – in my opinion – not as good of a looker as the E34 was, but it’s still a good looking car. This particular example is a post-facelift car, giving it the updated lights and M-sport wheels that make these look a bit more M-tacular. In often-specified silver over black, this is a fine looking example with lower average mileage:

The mileage represented on this vehicle is accurate. This vehicle has a smooth shifting transmission.Overall, this vehicle’s exterior is clean. The interior is clean and in good condition. If you enjoy having total control of a powerfull vehicle, then dont look any further because this 540i can satisfy you’r desire! This car is in good shape and comes equipped with; Sport pkg, CD(Single), Dual air bags, Side air bags, Leather seating, Moon roof, Alloy wheels, Traction control, Air conditioning, Power windows, Power door locks, Cruise control, Power steering and Telescoping wheel. There are some bells and whistles on the 2001 that weren’t on the 1995, so if you’re into the latest and greatest, I’m guessing the E39 is the car for you. If you consider it an M5 on a serious budget, it’s a great value. However, the same can be said for the E34, though E34 M5 prices are still amazingly less-than-silly and that would be the car I’d prefer. In spite of that, there isn’t one here as part of this comparison, so which of these two would I choose? Well, it may be surprising but I really prefer the early E34 in this duo. It just looks the part so much more so than the E39 to me, though both seem like good deals overall. Because the modifications aren’t overdone and I can easily envision how to “fix” them, the E34 gets my vote.

Which would you choose?

V8 Week 10K Friday: BMW 540i v Audi S4

509

Want a little sport in your daily commute? There are many cars that you can buy that will spice up your life, but few things will remove you more quickly from the grind than a 6-speed V8-engined daily driver. The automotive equivalent of “Calgon, take me away!”, these sedans will rocket you to your next location with plenty of style, luxury and speed. While there are a few German V8s that can be had for less than the models I’m reviewing today, there aren’t too many that offer the sportiness, manual 6 speed, and level of luxury that these three combine. I had to get a little liberal with your budget to pull it off so afford me a little slack, but here’s your 10K Friday Face-off for V8 Week – 2003 BMW 540i Sport 6 speed v. 2004 Audi S4. Let’s start with the 540i:

PLEASE CALL US FOR AVAILABILITY AND EXPLANATION OF INTERNET PRICING.

These cars are one of our favorites here at GCFSB.com. Sure, it’s not an M5, but you can’t buy an E39 M5 for 10K, now can you? This car offers 90% plus of the M5 experience for about half the asking price of most examples. The silver on grey combination may not be the wildest combo out there, but it’s classic and understated, still looking fresh (unlike some of those mint green 540s….remember them?). The M-Parallels are without a doubt one of the best looking wheels ever put on a BMW out of the box, and fit the car perfectly. This car is really a perfect Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde daily driver that you could take to dinner at a high class restaurant after your trip to the track, and it would be welcome at both. While it’s certainly a solid and fun daily driver, maybe you want a little more flare in your trip to work? Red your thing? Then I have the car for you:

340 silky smooth horsepower channeled through quattro all wheel drive with 4 door practicality makes a great package. It looks as if it had an enthusiastic owner prior to the current sale, judging by the size of the exhaust and the very much not-my-favorite wheels. Not to worry, though, as on eBay I was able to track down a reasonably priced set of OEM wheels – the auction is linked through the wheel photo.

So that fixes the outside look of the car and I bet that exhaust sounds great. This car is really the opposite of the 540i, not being understated at all. Flashy and loud, this one will shout to everyone “I DON’T BELONG HERE EVEN THOUGH I COULDN’T AFFORD THIS CAR UNLESS I WORKED FOR YOU”. Maybe that’s the message you’d like to send? Well, even if not, this car is still a lot of car for the money. In fact, both of these cars are. Which one would you have?

1999 BMW M Roadster

The Z3 was, from its inception, an unappreciated car in my opinion. It was initially criticized for not having enough power from the 1.9 inline-4 cylinder – even James Bond barely drove his for 30 seconds when he got it, then promptly gave it away to an unfit American in a symbolic British taunting of the Germans. They still haven’t gotten over the fact that the Axis powers do roadsters better than they did. When the Z3 did gain power, first with the addition of the M52 and then finally on US shores with a full-fledged M motor, criticism shifted to the “dated” rear suspension and BMW’s grab at the E30 parts bin. Subsequently, both the E30 and E36 have been lauded by enthusiasts as great handling cars, but the Z3 remains a bit of an outsider for most. As a result, for not a huge outlay you can seat yourself in a powerful, rear drive roadster capable of crossing the deserts of the Middle East (when properly equipped and supported by the BBC’s budget). Most of these roadsters were outfitted in typically sedate German tones, but a few were specified in brighter shades, like today’s ultra-low mileage Dakar Yellow 1999:

While I know the yellow isn’t to everyone’s liking, it’s certainly unique and not something you see every day. To me, certain colors define the car, and Dakar seems to suit this shape well; it is stylish, eye catching, and yet has an understated aggressiveness that accentuates the car. If you’re going to get one of these cars, why not be shouty about it? Not understated at all are the original alloys, combining a hyper silver look with that outrageous offset. They’re a perfect reminder that at heart, this is a German muscle car. Like the American muscle cars, there is a devoted following to these Ms, and they even have a website that neatly tracks production numbers; if you’re curious, this is one of 95 1999s in this spec and certainly the one in best condition.

Most earlier M Roadsters are priced in the mid-teens considering the mileage and the non-S54 power plant. This car is an obvious exception; although I think the dealer is asking very high, this is a effectively a brand new M Roadster and likely the lowest mileage example anywhere. The S52 cars aren’t as desirable right now, but the reality is that with the top down you can get 95 plus percent of the same smiles out of this car. While I don’t think the Z3 design has aged nearly as well as the Audi TT has, this car is a much better performance value. Pick one of these up, drive for a few years on the weekends and through the summer and fall, and more likely than not you’ll be able to break even or perhaps turn a profit if your timing is right. If you ever wanted an investment-grade M, this might be the right one to buy. My bet is that the odd colored cars like this one will be the ones setting the market in just a few years.

1988 BMW M6

When someone is asked to name some of the great models in BMW history, historically the same names populate the list – 328, 2002, 3.0 CSL, M1, E30 M3 and the E28 M5. Newer converts to the BMW brand will extol the virtues of the E36 and E46 M3, E39 M5 and the monstrous howling V10 E60 M5. They would be right, for sure, but notably absent from the front of most enthusiast’s minds is the spectacular E24 M6. Available initially in Europe in 1983 with the M88 motored M635CSi, North America later received a special S38 (catalyst equipped) version of the magical 24 valve inline six motor churning out enough power to scare most supercars. Though designed in the 1970s, the E24 seemed to really come into its own in the 1980s and defined “the look” – low, sleek and aggressive, these were highway predators that could hold their own on any back road. In terms of grand touring coupes, the M6 was simply in a class of its own with its unique combination of luxury, style and sport. Today’s 1988 M6 is an example of how perfect that combination was:

M6s come to the market in generally two fashions – near perfect examples, or examples with serious needs. This example seems very much to be the former as a lower-mileage survivor. The advertisement states fresh servicing, which is a plus, though it would be nice to know if that was just an oil change or a full valve adjustment service. At this point in their lives, the S38 motored BMWs aren’t a cheap car to keep running in top condition, so finding one that is in good shape like this is a great starting point. Being that the car is in Massachusetts, it would be prudent to check the bottom of the car for rust starting though it appears to be well cared for. Other than some small chipping on the chin spoiler, the new owner would most likely want to get a replacement set of wheels and tires immediately – at nearly $2,500 for a new set TRX tires, you’d be better off sourcing some Style 5 17” BBS RC wheels from a 528i sport to maintain the look and have affordable (and much better) tire options.

I really think the M6 market is undervalued right now. Values on the M3 continue to soar and are pulling other BMW models up with them. The price seems in line with the high end of the market, but represents only about 50% of the price of a similar mileage and condition E30 M3 right now. While having the 4 doors of the M5 is certainly a plus, the M6 was available –thankfully – in colors other than black, such as this pretty and eye-catching Cinnibar Red. The 88 and 89 models also have slightly revised and much more slick looking bumper covers and ellipsoid headlights. They are supreme highway cruisers, more comfortable for two than the M5 and with enough luggage space for a long weekend trip. As $24,000 is buying you less and less 25 year old BMW these days, this M6 offers you a lot of car for your investment, with the promise to appreciate as the years and the smiles grow.

2001 BMW 740i Sport

The E38 740i Sport is a favorite of ours here at GCFSB. When the photos of the new E65 and long wheelbase E66 7 series emerged, sales of E38 7 series actually increased, as people viewed the radical new design too much of a departure from what they were used to. Now, the E38 is a luxury car bargain, provided you aren’t fearful of what it takes to maintain one. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a 740i Sport in Royal Red, but it certainly is a nice departure from the usual blacks, silvers and grays that we see on larger German sedans. The chrome wheels are a bit too Hollywood for my tastes, but everything else about this E38 is scratching that executive car itch of mine.

2001 BMW 740i with Dinan upgrades. California owned 2001 BMW 740i in rare Royal Red on black leather with 83k miles. Mint condition, fully loaded, floor mats, tape, CD/AM/FM, car cover, Xenon lights, jet washers, M Package, records, new front tires, brand new front and rear brakes and rotors, all hoses and belts brand new, new radiator and extra key. It has a gorgeous color combination or rare Royal Red with black interior and is in near mind condition. The top is like new. This car has a 4.4 liter V8 powerful motor that is very tight, fast and smooth. Don’t miss this chance to own this rare beauty with low miles. I have owned this car for the past three years, bought it from a friend of mine and the car has been always serviced on time. Always been garage kept and the car will come with car cover. VIN# WBAGG834001DN87461

It would have been nice if the seller described in further detail exactly what Dinan upgrades this car has. From the pictures, it’s apparent this car has a Dinan cold air intake, but I’m curious whether this car might have a chip upgrade or other modifications. The asking price for this 740i is a bit high considering other E38s we’ve seen lately. The Imola Red 740i Sport that Nate featured earlier this month sold for $15,001 and had 93,000 miles. I’d suspect somewhere around $14,000 to $15,000 is all of the money for this car. While the E38s are still revered amongst the Bimmer faithful, prices haven’t moved all that much to warrant a premium on anything except very low mileage, showroom new examples.

2002 BMW 525iT Sport

BMW does and has always understood that there are many varieties of car buyers. From the “A to B driver”, all the way to the enthusiast, BMWs product line has offered something for everyone, and this is a prime example of that. It’s becoming a rarity these days to find any car with a manual transmission, let alone a wagon. The combination of buyer laziness,  and transmission technology are making the all mighty 3rd pedal an endangered species.

For those of us that prefer…scratch that demand a manual gearbox our options are slim. So where does one turn? More and more it’s towards cars like this well cared for 2002 BMW 525iT for sale in Philadelphia.

2000 BMW M5

A decade on, the E39 BMW M5 is still one of the most revered sports sedans to ever turn a wheel. With its 400 horsepower V8 and 6 speed manual transmission, this was a car designed to get you there in a hurry. Values on E39 M5s have fallen to a point where enthusiasts of more modest means can sample the greatness BMW offered at the turn of the century. This M5 for sale in Texas has been maintained to a high standard and has me itching to move back into a Bimmer in the near future.

2000 BMW M5 on eBay

2000 BMW M5 sports sedan, 59k miles, 6-speed manual, Titanium Silver w/ Black leather. Equipped w/ Navigation, sport seats, heated seats, Alcantara headliner, moonroof, etc. Nicest one around. This car has had its Maintenance II service done and recent oil/inspection service just 200 miles ago at the local BMW dealer. All service history from BMW and car is absolutely stunning. Also has a set of newer Michelin Pilot sports and the fit and finish of the alloy wheels impeccable (see pics). All lenses and dash gauges clear and crisp and the car still retains the factory BMW leather smell. Wood not dry or faded and all pixels in excellent shape. It is a nonsmoker and stays in the garage at all times. The car looks virtually new and you must see to believe it.

If you are tired of looking at average M5’s come take a look as it maybe the nicest one in existence. I have all the books, manuals, receipts, brochures, extra keys, original M5 floor mats, full spare w/ extra wheel and tools. This is destined to be a collector piece of BMW history and the compliments it receives from gawkers are endless. I have a clear, clean Texas title in my possession and has been serviced by a factory, authorized dealer. There are no stories w/ the car and it has not been modified or abused. It was sold to me on trade of a Ferrari I just delivered. Owned by a mature gentleman, BMW club member and very picky driver. No food or drink allowed inside and always kept pristine. Asking price of $22.9k.

Clean M5s with under 75,000 miles tend to hover right around the $20,000 mark these days, give or take. There’s a lot to like about this car, such as the full history, factory authorized servicing and ownership by a BMW club member. I’d say given the careful ownership, the asking price isn’t way off the mark.

1994 BMW 850CSi

The 8 series coupe was always a bit of a step child in the BMW lineup. A little over 31,000 were made over a ten year time span and they always played a bit of a second fiddle to that other sporting car from Germany, the Mercedes SL. Granted, these cars attracted very different demographics. In the middle of its lifespan, a tuned version of the 8 series appeared – the 850CSI. Fewer than 300 were ever made and they packed the company’s M modified S70B56 5.6 liter V12 mated to a 6 speed manual. These cars are beginning to take off in popularity in a way akin to the very last Porsche 928, the GTS. This 850CSi for sale in Scottsdale, Arizona has 84,000 miles on it and certainly belies that it has that much usage under its belt from the pictures.

1994 BMW 850CSi on JamesList

The BMW 8 Series (chassis code: E31) is a V8 or V12-engined 2-door 2+2 coupe built by BMW from 1989 to 1999. The 8 Series was developed as an entirely new class aimed at a different market, with a substantially higher price and better performance than the 6 series. It was BMW’s flagship car and had an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Over 1.5 billion Deutschemark was spent on total development (2008 USD nearly $1 billion). BMW used CAD tools, still unusual at the time, to design the car’s all-new body. Combined with wind tunnel testing, the resulting car had a drag coefficient of 0.29, a major improvement from the previous BMW M6/635CSi’s 0.39. The 8 Series offered the first V-12 engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox on a road car. It was also one of the first vehicles to be fitted with an electronic “fly-by-wire” throttle. The 8 Series was one of BMW’s first cars, together with the Z1, to use a multi-link rear axle.

As a top-of-the-range sports touring car, the 850CSi took over from the prototype M8. The 850CSi’s exclusive modified suspension included stiffer springs and dampers and reduced the car’s ride height. The recirculating ball steering ratio was dropped 15% over the stock E31 setup. The model also sported wider wheels, with the option of forged alloys. The 850CSi also sported exclusive front and rear bumpers that were reshaped for improved aerodynamic performance. Four round stainless steel exhaust tips replaced the square tips found on the lower tier 8 series models.

Our Brighton Motorsports 1994 BMW 850 CSi Coupe is exceptionally rare, and the MOST desirable example of the 8 Series breed. Over the 10 year model run BMW produced 31,062 8 Series units with worldwide production of the 850Csi at 1,510, of which only 225 were imported to North America. The 850 CSi also had the most powerful V12, displacing 5.6L with 375HP and 410 FT. LB. of torque on tap, easily propelling this immensely capable grand touring car to 100kph (62mph) in a blistering 5.6 seconds, which is exceptionally fast considering the car’s curb weight of 4,350 lbs.

This 850CSi is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, which was the only option available for the CSi. There’s also Power Heated Seats, Onboard Computer, Dual Zone Climate Control, Power Sunroof, Wood Interior Trim throughout, Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel & Gear Shift, Custom Alloy Wheels with Chrome Lip, and Premium Sound System. The original set of alloy wheels and tires also go with the car, so the new owner can put it back to stock and sell the newer 20” wheels and tires which were purchased at cost of over $5,000.00. This 850CSi has been meticulously maintained with no expense spared by the current owner since it was purchased by him in 1995. We also have all the maintenance records dating back to June 8th 1995, when it had 13,441 miles on it. The odometer currently indicates 83,790 miles. This is a truly a remarkable and unique opportunity to own a superlative driving machine.

Unlike other 8 series coupes, the CSi models aren’t a cheap proposition, as they were built in limited numbers. The last CSi we featured was an extremely low mileage example that was being offered for a mint. At a little over $30,000, this is still not cheap for an almost 20 year old car with nearly 84,000 miles that won’t be that cheap to run. One thing I’m not a fan of with this car is the wheels. Thankfully, the OEM rims are included with the sale. Given this car comes with a history dating back to 1995, I’d feel a bit more comfortable about the mileage closing on 100,000. Even though these can be a needy modern classic, so few were made that the 225 examples ever made shouldn’t have much trouble finding decent homes.

2001 BMW 740i Sport

The BMW 7 Series of 1995 through 2001 is one of those cars that was instantly immortalized once its less than pleasing successor was introduced. Offered with a the versatile 4.4 liter V8 or the 5.4 liter V12, these executive sedans were slightly less popular with dignitaries and businessmen than the Mercedes-Benz S class, however, they were a more mainstream choice than its other compatriot, the Audi A8.

My favorite of all the E38 7 series is the short wheelbase 740i with the M Package. Included in this option package were the classy 18″ M parallel alloys, black shadowline trim, a stiffer suspension and a modified Steptronic transmission with a higher stall speed on the torque convertor. Low mileage examples are getting hard to come by, but here is 740i Sport in a sinister shade of black for sale in California.

You are looking at the cleanest blk/blk 2001 BMW 740I M pkg, sport pkg, and convience pkg. Have all service records and owner manuals. The buy it now price of $14,500 is in line with market values and given the desirable color, full service history and stunning condition, I have no doubt this car will go fast. I think the complexity and looks of the 7 series that followed beginning for the 2002 model year will continue to put the E38 in a good light and position it as a modern day classic.
