2001 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

I’ve expressed my love for the W210 E55 AMG before. I think they are one of the best value Mercedes you can buy. It’s still relatively fast even by 2017 terms, it’s not too ugly and most importantly it won’t bankrupt you in an afternoon. I can’t think of a reason I’d ever want to sell mine as the values have been staying pretty stable and given it’s rarity, it might even creep up in value a little — at least I hope. So when I came across this low-mile 2001 for sale in Virginia, I had to take a closer look.

For sale is my mint condition 2001 Mercedes E55 AMG. The car has 46,394 miles and is brilliant silver over two tone. The car has never been in any type of accident and wears brand new Hankook tires on all four corners. The wheels are the original 18″ staggered monoblock style with absolutely no curb rash anywhere. This vehicle is truly like new. The pixels on the dash all work and the leather is free from the wear you typically see on these cars, especially on the drivers side side-bolsters. The headliner is in perfect condition and does not sag at all. The paint still gleams like day one and has been garage kept it’s entire life. The car is free from any signs of rust from top to bottom. This car drives like a dream, perfect in every way. Transmission shifts perfectly and smoothly, engine is strong, reliable, and powerful. The AC and heat work great as well as all electrical devices on the car. The headunit has been replaced with a newer style that offers bluetooth, however, I do have the original headunit that will come with the car. The dash is clean and free of any blemishes or cracks as well as the black birds eye maple woodgrain. Recent service on the car included new brake pads, engine fan and belts, oil change, and new tires. I’ve owned a few E55s in the past and a number of other enthusiast grade Mercedes and this is honestly the cleanest example left. Please see pictures below which speak for themselves. The car is registered in Montana under my business but is located in Virginia. I am a Mercedes and auto enthusiast in general and would love for someone who can appreciate the car as I do to own it next. This is one of five vehicles I currently own and unfortunately I do not get to drive it as often as I would like, given I also own a w210 E60 RS Renntech. This 2001 in 722 Silver is probably one of the cleanest example E55’s left out there. I can’t see any blemishes or marks by inside on the two-tone seats or outside. Even the 18 inch AMG Monoblocks are like new. Examples like this are what help you rationalize why people were willing to spend almost $80,000 on one of these when they were new. This owner is no stranger to AMG cars as he has owned a few over the years and is a true dyed in the wool Mercedes enthusiast.

At $17,900, this price doesn’t make me raise an eyebrow or question it at all. Combine an extremely clean facelifted E55 with lower miles and no modifcations? This is what you’ll pay for it. You want one with 150,000 miles that’s had 6 owners and needs a bunch of things? You can save yourself the ten grand and go buy one for $7,900. I think this seller will eventually find a buyer looking for a no-excuses, turn-key example to not worry about, and this looks like it’s the ticket.

2005 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLK usually doesn’t get a lot of love from enthusiasts and I totally understand why. The first generation was a competition with the BMW Z3 to see how cheap they can build a small roadster made completely of flimsy plastic. Speaking of those two cars, it brought back fond memories of playing Need for Speed: High Stakes on my computer back in 1999. I blame that game as well as Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit for my European car addiction. But back to the SLK and the lack of second-hand attention these attract. The second generation R171 was a big improvement over the first generation, but the front end clip had a strange pig nose look that turned off a lot of people. The interiors were still a bit disappointing with lots of plastic and sub-par materials from what you’d expect from a proper Mercedes roadster.

Now in the tradition of post-2000 Mercedes, they sent this car off to AMG to make it fast and make it expensive. What came back was a little Mercedes with big everything. Big engine, big wheels, big brakes and of course quad exhaust tips. Mercedes stuck with the tried and true 5.4 liter V8 M113 that made 360 horsepower and 380 lb·ft of torque. Keep in mind this is in a car that weighs a little under 3,400 pounds. Mercedes officially said this little SLK will get to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds but some magazines had these hitting them in the 4.5 range. Now that some of these AMGs are hitting their teenage years, what should you expect to pay for one of these mini-rockets? Lets find out.

This specific 2005 looks to be one of the better 12-year old Mercedes you could buy. It looks very clean and most importantly has a ton of recent maintenance and repairs that puts my mind at ease if I was in the market for the R171. Inside, you can see the interior isn’t the greatest thing ever, but it’s clean and functional. The red inserts on the seats and door cards is a little odd, but isn’t not the worst color combination with the blue exterior paint.

The price for the SLK55 is a mere $14,990 which in my opinion is a ton of value for Mitsubishi Mirage money. This was a $65,000 car new which isn’t surprising to anyone if you are here reading this, but I think the real question is where is the bottom for these cars? Will eventually these hit $10,000 or lower? I’m not sure where the end will be since we are entering a territory where there is a flood of AMG cars out there that all a dozen or more years old. If you were thinking about a SLK55, these cars are pretty robust outside of issues with the power hardtop which can get expensive very fast if something goes fast. Otherwise, if you want a little roadster that is very fast but not all that practical, a SLK55 AMG could be a great buy.

1998 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG Estate

Long before the time of W211 E55 and E63 AMG wagons pinning your groceries to the back window as you leave the supermarket parking lot, there was the original AMG wagon you might not of known about. The C43 was the first official AMG offered from Mercedes-Benz in wagon form. Only around 800 of them were produced worldwide. Unfortunately, ‘worldwide’ in this case doesn’t include North America – none were imported here, but we can still dream. This 1998 for sale outside of London, England gives you a chance to be extremely practical at less than half the price of the later AMG wagons.

Seller’s Description: The potent Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG was introduced in July 1994 as a flagship of the successful C-Class range. Unlike its C-Class stablemates, it was only offered in one pricey but complete package, including standard automatic gearbox, classy AMG alloy wheels, skirts and spoilers body kit plus a complete specification. Numbers were limited. A five-speed automatic gearbox and standard cruise control were added in August 1996 and the car was eventually run out with the C-class facelift in the summer of 1997. Mercedes super saloon fans then had to wait until the following year for the introduction of its replacement, the 4.3-litre V8-powered C43, which included all the refinements of the updated C-Class range. Auction

This C43 Estate sports the awesome 189 Green Black Metallic paint which is exactly how it sounds. In some lights it looks green, in others black, and in these photos it looks more like a navy blue. Either way, a great color if you are into darker tones. Having just over 66,000 miles, this AMG doesn’t look like it’s been overcome by the rust monster that W202s are infamous for which is a great thing. One thing to keep in mind when buying any C43 is to be wary of transmission issues – they are are notorious for needing rebuilds as they couldn’t handle of the torque from the M113 4.3 liter. Otherwise, these are pretty stout cars that don’t need a ton of attention if you stay on top of maintenance. One thing to note, it looks like this car has the parking sensors which is an extremely rare option on the W202.

As for price, it’s anyone’s guess since this is an auction in England. Usually these range from $7,500 to $12,500 depending on condition if converted to US dollars. The collectability of the W202 AMG cars are starting to rise, but I wouldn’t call these a blue chip or must have for any collector just yet. But if you were looking for a rare wagon that is plenty fast, this one is tough to argue.

2001 Mercedes-Benz SL500

The Mercedes-Benz R129, in my opinion, is in that limbo stage where a it’s not fully a considered a classic yet, but it’s starting to be eyed up as a future collectible for the right models. In typical SL fashion, the chassis ran a staggering 12 years from 1990-2002 which saw many face lifts and engine updates. Seeing as there was a giant difference in technology between 1990 and 2002, the first R129 that rolled off the line and is a lot different than the last R129 that did. Today’s SL for sale in California is towards the end of the production cycle and takes advantage of almost all Mercedes had to offer at the time.

Roll the dice? 2003 Mercedes-Benz G500 with 318,000 miles

I have an affinity for vehicles that have hit the moon milestone (238,900 miles) while looking like they’ve done so with relative ease. For this 2003 G500, it has already hit the moon and is halfway home on the return trip. I think people have an irrational fear of higher mileage vehicles because they’ve either been with been with cars that didn’t age well or they’ve been told that higher mileage automatically means “bad”. There is some merit in that the more miles a vehicle has, the greater the risk of things failing, but I believe that you get out cars what you put in them — which a few exceptions, of course.

Feature Listing: 2003 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

The W124 500E/E500 was a tough act to follow, but Mercedes-Benz stepped up to the plate well with the new AMG collaboration W210 E55 AMG. The M113 power plant generated an impressive 350 horsepower and 391 lb.ft of torque – more than had graced that legendary W124. In its own way, the E55 AMG became a legend, too – subtle looks offering a velvet wrapper on one hefty hammer. So when it came to replacing it again in the new W211, AMG was forced to turn the dial up a few more notches. It was forced because the market had moved on, and the W210’s power output was no longer competitive in the early 2000s. So forced it was, as in forced induction. The M113 now featured an IHI supercharger, and power increased dramatically. This was no small step for man, this was a giant leap for Mercedes kind. The W211 E55’s power output leaped to 469 hp and it now 520 lb.ft of torque. Of course, it needed those numbers because the competition from Audi in the 450 horsepower twin-turbocharged RS6 and the outgoing benchmark BMW M5’s 400 horsepower S62 V8. Going nuclear on the power level meant AMG needed to upgrade the rest of the hardware, as well. Airmatic adjustable suspension with sport tuning gave the hefty E55 poise in the bends, while 14.2″, 8 piston calipers hidden behind huge split 5-spoke AMG wheels with 245 and 265 section tires kept grip and speed in check. The results were palpable: in a 2003 Car and Driver comparison against its nearest rivals, the new E55 AMG simply outpaced everything in a straight line. 0-60 was dispatched in just 4.3 seconds. 100 came only 5 and a half seconds later. The quarter mile was done in 12.5 seconds. Forget sedans, those were numbers that challenged the Corvette Z06 at the same time, and close to a decade and a half later are still very impressive:

I love the W210 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG ­— so much so that I bought two of them. I still have one and gave the other one to my father because he, too, loved it so much. He drives his everyday in all the elements, while mine stays tucked away in the garage under a cover and doesn’t come out unless the pollen level is under a certain limit and no one on my street is cutting grass. You can probably guess what kind of condition both cars are in by now but that’s indicative of the chassis. AMG or not, you were going to get out of the W210 what you put into it.

The W210 E55 is a special car. It’s the last AMG built before they started going crazy with Airmatic suspension, SBC brakes, superchargers – the list goes on. The W210 a simple equation: big engine, big brakes and big wide tires. Yes, you still got all the special edition stuff like different bumpers and side skirts, exclusive seats, steering wheel, gauge cluster and some wood that the non-AMG cars were left without. In addition to these special goodies, you got a chance at some options that you probably didn’t even know existed on the W210. That’s what kind of E55 we have for sale today in Dallas. Recently I looked at a couple unique W220s in a short wheelbase 2006 S350 and an armored 2001 S500. Today’s car isn’t anything odd or unique, just a regular 2002 S500. But makes it special is that it just happens to have only a little over 5,000 miles and look basically brand new. Welcome back to Fail Friday: Where once good cars can hopefully get the help they deserve. Today’s vehicle is a result of what happens when people just simply have too much money. It’s not the fact that it’s the ultra-rare W463 G500 Cabrio, it’s the fact that someone decided to turn it into a driving Salvador Dali gallery.
