Here’s a chance to steal the quintessential super sedan from Bavaria without repercussions from the law. The E39 M5′s design and performance has held up extremely well in the decade since its inception, the muscular shape still catching eyes and 400hp 5.0L V8 still scaring children, animals, and uninitiated lead-feet. A minor fender-bender knocks this one’s AutoCheck score down a bit, but this is balanced out by fairly low mileage, just over 90k miles. What isn’t balanced out is the garish interior, an unfortunate choice in this otherwise classy and handsome beast.

Overall this looks like a fine example that could be had at a great price. I would seriously consider eBaying at least the seats if not the door panels too and finding something more… restrained. Other than that, this is a great chance to snag one of the best BMWs in recent memory, one of those (sadly) increasingly rare instances of a Bimmer that truly is an Ultimate Driving Machine.

High mileage 1988 BMW M5 Dinan E28

Sometimes we find cars we posted before return to the blog much later for sale by a different owner. Sometimes we don’t remember this. So that said I don’t think we have seen this particular M5 before, but we have seen a number of black E28s move through this blog.
This one has 214,000 miles, but only 25,000 on an engine rebuild and 1,000 on a valve job. The engine rebuild also saw the car see some go fast additions including, a lightweight flywheel and 3″ exhaust. The car also has a Dinan chip and Dinan Stage 3 suspension. 17″ rims and Euro headlights complete the nice look.
There are a few bits that need to be found, replaced, and fixed, but nothing that would prevent instant enjoyment from the purchase.
The car is sitting at $5,655 with bids and reserve not met.
Seller description:

There were only supposed to be 500 handbuilt BMW M5′s but BMW ended up making about 1270 total cars due to demand. This is car # 126 of the first 500. E28 chassis M5′s are the last of the handbuilt M/// cars.

It has 214k on the odo but only about 25k on the engine since a full rebuild by Fall Line Motorsports in the Chicago Illinois area. A good rebuild on these engines will run upwards of $10,000, which is why you never see them rebuilt. Timing chain and guides replaced, a lightweight flywheel was used in place of the stock unit for faster revs, a Fahey crankshaft hub was used for greater strength. SCCA style exhaust was custom built with high flow cat, 3″ mandrell bent pipe and stock M5 muffler.

The head work was done by Chuck Stickley from CSS Motorsports http://www.cssmotorsports.com/
Chuck builds BMW engines and races professionally in SCCA competitions. The headwork alone ran $3,500 and is fully ported and matched with a full angle job. A Dinan exhaust cam gear was used in place of the factory peice for better torque response.

The car was also converted at Fall Line to a Split Second Mass Airflow system with both ARM1 & ARC 2 systems replacing the stock airflow meter. There is also a custom aluminum air filter cover included that was fabricated to shield the filter from engine temps. It is easily removable and secures with a Dzus fastener. This system allows for manual overide of air and fuel levels and is easily adjusted to account for intended driving conditions.

Dinan 10 Point car and has been “Badged” as such by Dinan Engineering.

Stage 3 suspension system: SLS delete, adjustable sway bars, Dinan springs and fixed negative camber plates front and rear set the camber at about -2 degrees. Rear struts are also Dinan Bilstein peices that are height adjustable.

Clean 2000 E39 BMW M5 Red Dinan S1

This is quite a clean looking M5 for being a three owner car. The seller says it has never seen winter roads and has been in a garage all its life. With only 40,000 miles those three owners sure didn’t use it to commute very long. The car has some mild upgrades including the Dinan S1 package, with exhaust and intake. It also has a set of deep dish 20″ rims and aftermarket angel eyes. The clutch and flywheel have been replaced at 30,000 so they should be good for awhile. The engine bay looks amazingly clean.
The car is at $22,000 reserve not met. As long as the reserve isn’t set more than $10,000 from this, you could take this car and drive it for a few years and then sell it with out much depreciation as long as you take care of it.

1988 BMW M5 with 79,000 miles

Here’s a clean example of a dying breed, the E28 BMW M5, sold only in 1988. These are among one of the rarest M models, with the BMW M1, E34 M5 Touring and E31 850CSi being the only models sold in lesser quantities.

I am selling my beautiful and rare E28 M5. This is the finest possible example, in my opinion, that you will find. Why? It’s not a garage queen that you’ll feel guilty driving, but it’s not a thrashed junker that won’t perform to your expectations. It is a very, very nicely kept and maintained example of a true sports sedan. Somewhere around 1200 of these cars were ever imported to the US (all with black paint and beige leather). Nobody knows how many are still roadworthy, but very few are in daily driving condition with less than 100K miles. If you are considering this car, you likely are familiar with its history and stats. Here’s a brief summary of stats and recent upgrades:

Engine: 3.5L inline 6-cylinder; 256hp stock; 0-60 6.5 secs

The car has the flaws you’d expect for it’s age: minor dash cracks, paint blemishes, minor leather cracking. None of it will keep you from loving this car as much as I do.

While E28 M5s are rare, I’m thinking $13,500 might be a bit optimistic for an E28 M5, unless of course it had under 50,000 miles. These cars just don’t seem to have the lust after factor as much as the E30 M3s and E24 M6s have. I could be wrong, though. As real estate agents will tell you, there’s an a** for every seat.

Like the big hairy American winning machine Ricky Bobby, some people just wanna go fast. So when you have a perfectly quick E34 535i what’s the only logical thing to do? Answer: stuff a M70 V12 under the bonnet.

Well that’s what Tim Milner decided to do. At the said cost of over $100K, this BMW has seen some major surgery. To help get the new heart really breathing, the 5’er received stainless steel headers and a custom fabricated Borla exhaust. The rest of the engine upgrades, including cams and software, bring the car beyond the 400hp mark and 6 gear has been tested at over 160mph.

I want to personally thank the owner for keeping the aesthetics mostly unchanged. A true BMW enthusiast will appreciate the M5 throwing star wheels, M5 seats, Eibach suspension and modest aero package.

I’m curious to see how high biding will go for this shake n bake Bimmer.

Euro sport wagons have a cult following. The top of the line performance models, Audi RS, Benz AMG, and BMW M wagons, are scarcely available at bargain prices. This is in part because they are made in such small numbers, but also because they take the idea of the Q ship one step further, by hiding the wolf in a sheep’s clothing of a station wagon. People love these, practical, easier to convince a significant other that they are a good purchase, but loaded with all the horsepower and road handling of their standard brethren.
The Euro only M5 Touring Wagon model would be fantastic had been bone stock, but it even includes some more impressive additions.
This is one of only four built in the splendid Orinoco Green Metallic paint. It also has the two tone interior.
What sets this car even further out from the crowd is the Albrex supercharger attached to the 3.8 liter six. The car has been tuned by Diebold and dynoed at 440 horsepower at the fly wheel.
The 18″ M-parallels look good with the classic lines. The manual will certainly provide for plenty of entertainment and keep the boost up.

Beautiful E28 BMW M5 for Sale

Oh my. Yes, I’ve switched back to thinking E28 M5s are the best generation (though that blue E39 that flew by me yesterday was evil in the best way). As we’ve said before, there’s no replacement for the original of a German classic. This gorgeous one owner (!!!) example may be the best-looking E28 M5 I’ve seen with a recent respray and the awesome 17″ 15-spokes from an E39 540i.

Cons: 22 years old isn’t young, 132k miles isn’t zero, $15,800 isn’t cheap.

Pros: One owner, dealer-maintained, all service records. Tastefully updated with restraint. 1988 was an awesome year for BMWs. 132k miles isn’t that much. That new coat of black looks dead sexy, as do the wheels, and the interior and… Everything.

You could make an offer on the eBay listing, but it deserves full price. It’s gorgeous, and though it’s covered some miles, this is an exceptionally maintained M5. If you’re in the market for an E28 M5, buy this one. I’ll go to bed tonight wishing I could.

A couple weeks ago I blog-drooled all over my computer when I found a red E34 on BMW double-spokes on eBay. While perusing MunichEvo, I saw another red E34 on the same wheels and thought “oh cool, it’s for sale somewhere else and cheaper!” A closer look revealed that this is, in fact, NOT the same car, as it has the black M5 body bits and about twice the miles of that first pristine example. It also has some nice Dinan bits, and leaves me painfully torn as to whether I think the black or body-color aero bits look better. You be the judge:

I think if it came down to it I might go body-color, but the black has an attractive just-another-5er quality to it. Either way, these owners have the same impeccable taste in wheels, not to mention cars and color. Some well-chosen Dinan bits (chip, cam sprocket, brakes, suspension, and a thankfully unused trunk badge) make it a little extra special, and while it’s not a 55k-mile cherry like the first, it certainly doesn’t show its 119k.

Someone’s getting lucky at $13,995.

Garage Queen E28 For Sale

Found a very very nice 1988 E28 on eBay, this car with just over 116k on the ticker looks to be in original condition and well maintained.

From the seller’s ad:

“I will keep it short and to the point. This 1988 M5 is flawless. I have dealt with any and all issues , bringing this to show condition. If you are an enthusiast of the 1988 M5 , you know that these are not 10k cars , nor are they 25k cars. My price is very reasonable. I have all receipts dating back to new. This car has led a privileged life. You may call me with any serious questions. Please only call if this is the car that you have been looking for.”

As they say, brevity is wit. Seems as though the seller has a well cared for car and a realistic understanding of its worth. Anyone looking for a clean E28 has to consider this an appealing option. Bidding is at a little over $11k with four days to go, I think a reserve of $17k sounds reasonable. Only time will tell.

As I sit here with a beautiful 2001 M5 to share with you, I try to think of what I can say about this car that hasn’t been said before on GCFSB.

Stunningly handsome…”we know, just look at it!”
Incredible performance and handling…”duh”
The ultimate expression of BMW…”is there an echo in here?”

I guess all I can do is give you the break down on this Bavarian favorite.

It’s a 2001 with 87K on the clock. Looks extremely clean inside and out and there are no known problems. Sounds good so far right? This is where “us” connoisseurs can get picky. Modifications. Some would say the M5 is best left completely stock. I do admit to loving the stock E39 M5 wheels to death but I think the BBS RGR’s really set this car apart. The Kelleners Sport exhaust is, in my opinion, by far the best sounding M5 exhaust on the market and trust me; I’ve watched just about every Youtube “M5 exhaust” video out there. Other nice upgrades are the Dinan CAI, HID fogs, short shifter and adjustable suspension. The only things on this car that I’m not crazy about are the ACS splitters and the “Powerchip”. Take a look for yourself.

As of now, the bids are up to $17,200. My guess is the reserve is somewhere in the high 19′s/low 20′s. Regardless, it’s a beautiful car that I know all of us love and wish to own. Enjoy.
