1969 Mercedes-Benz 250CE 5-Speed Manual – REVISIT

The Moss Green Metallic Euro-spec Mercedes-Benz 250CE 5-speed we wrote up about a month ago is back up for sale, still with a reserve auction. While not the most popular Mercedes-Benz model, this car offers a lot of value in classic Mercedes motoring and we think it looks fantastic:

The 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL that Carter featured last week highlighted a very rare option for the manufacturer at the time, the ZF 5-speed manual gearbox. But the roadster wouldn’t be the only model to employ this advanced transmission. The rather staid looking W114 Coupe would feature the 5-speed in the six cylinder models, complimenting what was, at the time, the newest chassis in the lineup. This 250CE for sale in Michigan was imported into the US in the 1990s and featured at one time in the Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s magazine, The Star.

1979 Mercedes-Benz 350SE

With our resident Mercedes-Benz expert Paul out of the country, we’re going through a bit of a classic Mercedes-Benz drought here at GCFSB. I’ve tried to fill in a few gaps, but the reality is that Paul has a knack for finding the best examples of the stars from Germany. So until he comes back, you’ll have to make due with our admittedly second-tier examples, two of which we’ll feature today and both of which at W116s. Right now I have a one of the lesser examples – a 1979 350SE. It doesn’t have the big 6.9 motor and it’s not the long wheel base, but it’s a slick Euro model which appears clean – so certainly worth a look:

1994 Mercedes-Benz E500

You never have to go very far to find an 500E or renamed E500 on these pages; in fact, last Friday we had an interesting comparison between an E28 M5 and E124 500E. People came down on both sides of the fence there, and I think it’s reasonable to like either for various reasons. The E28 M5 is a very special car, with many less made than the W124 super sedan. But numbers alone don’t tell the whole story, of course, and the W124 has many fans for good reason. It may not have been the first super sedan or even the first super Mercedes-Benz, but it was an exclamation point on a legendary period of some of the best sedans the world has yet seen. Pick the one that you like – they’re all legends now; Audi V8 quattro, 200 20V or S4/S6, BMW E28 M5 and E34 M5, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 and 2.5 Cosworth and, of course, the 500E/E500:

1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

If you “ran for the hills” screaming “My eyes! My eyes!” after yesterday’s 500SEC Convertible, I wouldn’t blame you. It was a shame what was done to an otherwise classic car, and outside of the AMG body kit and Euro bits it didn’t really look worth salvaging; certainly, not at a quarter million miles for $25,000. In an attempt to redeem the dignity of the stately Mercedes-Benz brand, then, here’s a much better alternative; a completely stock 1986 560SEC in a rare color combination – Smoke Silver with Henna interior:

1993 Mercedes-Benz G36 AMG

The 1990s was a time of transition at Mercedes-Benz. Model nomenclature evolved from numbers at the beginning of each model to a letter, Porsche was commissioned for a super sedan in the form of the 500E/E500 and AMG, the engineering firm responsible for a lot of Mercedes-Benz motorsport success and performance oriented street vehicles became a subsidiary under the Three Pointed Star umbrella. Their first official vehicle was the W202 based C36, a compact sports sedan intended to battle for enthusiasts’ wallets right in BMW’s Motorsport backyard. Right before the C36 appeared, an AMG oddity appeared, something that would grab the attention of the burgeoning SUV market: the G36 AMG.

This pumped Geländewagen appeared some years before Mercedes-Benz would flood the US market with G500s, G550s and AMG tuned examples that have become so popular with the rich and famous. With a breathed on 3.6 liter inline-6 under the hood, this G-wagen would give off-roaders a bit more juice when tackling those steep hills with this truck’s renowned three locking differentials.

Tuner Tuesday: 1989 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC Convertible “AMG”

If you missed Paul’s MerCamino earlier today, I’ve got another strange conversion for you. The 1980s were a heady time for “tuners”, some of which made some downright odd creations and others of which took existing really good cars and just…well, made them worse. One of the best ways to wreck a good car is to chop the roof off, and making cabriolet or roadster versions of coupes seemed to be a sure tuning bet in the 1980s. We got convertible versions of the Quattro, Porsche 928, BMW 6 series – heck, even the Ferrari Testarossa wasn’t immune. But if you wanted luxury and sun for 4, of course you needed a Mercedes-Benz 500SEC convertible. And while you’re there, why not throw in some AMG bits. “What?”, you say, “But I’ve never seen one!” Search no more:

1969 Mercedes-Benz Unimog

Now HERE is a Unimog that is all set to be converted into my most badass of RVs. Used in Desert Storm by the Belgians, it’s been used as a cabinetry truck most recently. What I love, besides the quintessential Mog-ness, is that it has 90% of the hardware already installed for some fold-down beds. With the Pohl Cabinetry decals removed, the reversed H.E.L.P. on the front would be a great entrance into a campground, and by campground, I mean anywhere I want to sleep because nothing will stop a Mog.

20K Friday – Super Sedan Edition: E28 M5 v. W124 500E – Which Would You Choose?

What’s going on here? Tax returns are still heading out and we’re feeling rich? Well, not so much but it is nice to dream. While normally on Friday we look for the best deals, this duo was too good to pass up. You could argue about who started the super-sedan trend, but there’s no doubt that the Germans perfected it. Two of the most memorable of these are the E28 M5 and W124 500E; blunt instruments that achieve their goals of luxurious speed in very different ways. We’ve covered many M5s recently of different generations, but as I mentioned in the M5 Roundup, while it’s tempting to buy the cheapest M5 you can get your hands on that’s often a poor decision; in many ways, the same could be said about the 500E. So, here are two quite nice examples to choose from – which would be your dream? Let’s start with the M5:

1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6

A few weeks ago, I popped this 190E 2.6 up on our Facebook Fanpage; while it looked quite nice at the time, there weren’t many photos and the pricing seemed a bit high. But the big question was “Why?”; why would someone choose to convert the less desirable 2.6 inline-6 automatic model into a fast Benz when you already have a solid starting point in the 2.3 and 2.5 16V models? In part, the seller answers that in their description below; but to me, it doesn’t necessarily matter what the base model is – after all, there are plenty of people modifying Porsche 912s and 944s, there are countless E30, E36s and E46s that aren’t M3s that people choose, and even plenty of Audi A4s that get turned up in favor of the S4. Why not the 190E 2.6, then?
