Radwood Ready: 1987 Volkswagen GTI Callaway Turbo by Neuspeed

Recently, in my 1989 GTI post, I referenced the Radwood show in California. A celebration of all things 80s (being liberal to accept items both older and newer, too!), Radwood has become the newest and hottest show to consider. Why? Well, to head to Pebble Beach, Amelia Island or Greenwich Concours, you’ll need a car of significant stature. But you can roll up to Radwood in a 4000 quattro you literally just pulled out of a field (seriously, someone did), and you’ll find fans to celebrate both the model and your insistence that it’s a cool car worthy of being saved. Because, ultimately, it was!

But the GTI I presented was a headscratcher because it was so expensive and subtle that most would probably walk right by. Sure, it had little details that were neat, but not THAT neat or THAT particularly 80s. But today’s GTI takes 80s To The Extreme, killin’ your brain like a poisonous mushroom as you ponder if anything less than the best is a felony:

1977 Volkswagen Scirocco

In lieu of the normal “Tuner Tuesday” posts, today I decided to write up two home-brew specials in the likeness of many tuners. We started with the 1968 BMW 1600 S14 swap, a rare to see model with some really great looking and fun-increasing modifications. But I think the cake might go to this afternoon’s Christmas Eve special, a 1977 Volkswagen Scirocco that has more period modifications than you’ll usually see – but manages to pull it off really well! That can’t always be said for 1980s-era modifications in general, as quite a few were in questionable taste. That’s part of what makes this Scirocco so special and neat to see, if seeing an old Scirocco wasn’t neat enough. We’ve gotten to see two this week, the all original and mint condition 1981 Scirocco and today’s tuned example:

1983 Volkswagen GTi Callaway Turbo

509

As Yogi Berra once famously said, “It’s like deja-vous all over again”. What are the odds of two 1983 Volkswagen GTi Callaway Turbos coming up for sale within a week of each other 30 years later? Not good. But perhaps it’s time to play the lottery, because here we go again! If last week’s stunning $17,750 1983 GTi wasn’t the right color to peak your interest, perhaps today’s example can color you a bit more red. Today’s example is not nearly as pristine as the earlier example with the best part of ten times the miles, but it still looks like a pretty slick package overall

Holy “Caps Lock”, Batman. This car has some obvious needs compared with the other two GTis we’ve featured in the past week. There are pieces missing, the steering wheel and front seats aren’t correct, the rear spoiler isn’t original but looks clean (similar to the Mk.2 design), and it appears that the interior overall could use a good cleaning. It’s not the cleanest build I’ve seen, but overall presents pretty well and crucially the floors look to be pretty solid, so it could be a great starting point to either further modify or revert the car towards a more-stock state. One thing I’m not a huge fan of is the wheels; I’d probably try to get some of the larger Fifteen52 snowflake replicas on there, or perhaps some BBS RA wheels. Get a set of period Recaros, a GTi steering wheel and some odds and ends, and I bet this is a fun car to drive!

Here are some wheels I found on Ebay:

And some seats from a later GTi which could probably work with some modification:

Pricing is no reserve, so we’ll have to see where it ends up, but my guess is like the 1984 Barn Find GTi a few days ago it should end in the $5,000 – $7,000 range.

2007 Audi A3 ready for street or track

You don’t see too many A3s setup like this. Tasteful mods have this 25,150 mile Audi ready for light track or autocross duty, but leave it perfectly manageable for the spirited daily commute.
The car has a dyno slip showing 270 horsepower off the crank of the 3.2 liter V6, channeled through the quattro system. Despite the mods and the photos of the car on the track the seller says the factory warranty is still in effect through April and the transmission’s lifetime warranty is also still good.
Lots of mods and spare parts are included with the sale.
Along with these mods listed from the seller you also get all the stock parts:

Bilstein HD (Yellow) Shocks and Struts
H@R Sport Springs all corners
H@R Front Sway Bar 28 MM adjustable

OSIR 2-sided Carbon Fiber Hood pre drilled for hood pins
Extra Neuspeed Sway Bar Bracket

Looks like fun. $31,700 is the ask, so far there are no bids at the opening reserve not met price of $23,000. The seller should know you never get your money back on mods like this when you sell a used car so anything over $30k is wishful thinking.

Low Miles 1984 Scirocco Loaded With Zender Goodies!

1984 Volkswagen Scirocco with Zender Goodies

I haven’t seen a second gen Scirocco this clean since high school, and that was nearly 20 years ago! This car belongs to my buddy Josh from Sports Car Shop in Eugene. In addition to only having 65k miles, this car is immaculate. Josh is a particular guy and keeps his rides spotless. He shopped all over the world to put together the great period correct aftermarket parts and the result is quite stunning.

Check out the listing on VWVortex for this 1984 Scirocco:

Good luck with the sale Josh!
