2007 Audi RS4

Love fast Audis but want something a little more special for your money than this week’s Imola Yellow S4? How about the Audi RS4, one of the best sport sedans to be produced in recent memory? There are few complaints to be levied against the RS4 except that Audi refused to bring us the Avant version. Other than that, we got the sedan or cabriolet versions, both with the splendid and high-revving V8 soundtrack, aggressive flares and gaping grills to remind you of how special this ride is. Like most of the modern Audis, my main complaint is the snooze-fest color pallet most were ordered in – black, grey, greyer, silver, or silverier. However, there were some enterprising individuals who looked past the grey-scale color options and checked the charisma box when ordering their special car – such is the case with this Imola Yellow 2007 example.

Seriously, if you’re going to be shouty about how fast your fast car is, you might as well go out like a lion. Imola Yellow will never be confused with anything subdued, but in many ways it matches the character of the car. The engineers wanted you to smile, they wanted you to feel special, and they wanted to brighten your day; yellow just expresses those desires outwardly. This RS4 certainly appears well cared for, though as typical for an Ebay dealer no maintenance history is offered, and as these have crested 5 years old, you’ll want to know that. Imola Yellow and Sprint Blue are also two of the more rare colors to find these RSs in, so they often command a premium, though in this case I think the premium is too much. Indeed, the dealer seems to agree; if you follow the link to their pictures you’ll find the car has a lower price tag by $1,000 on the windshield. Even with that discount, this RS doesn’t have particularly low miles compared to other examples yet is still a substantial $4,000 – $5,000 premium over others. Heck, look hard enough and you’ll find a RS4 for nearly $10,000 less than this one – but it won’t be yellow. Maybe that’s okay with you, but if you want the wild child colors, for now you’ll have to pay.

2007 Audi RS4

It’s been a few weeks since the last RS4 we’ve featured, and not much has changed in that time regarding how stellar a package this car is. Coupling a 420 horsepower high-revving V8 to the sport-biased quattro drive train through a 6-speed manual ranks pretty high on the list of wants, especially when that package is as good looking as the B7 RS4 was. Subtle flares and gaping grills hint at the massive performance these cars are capable of, while the rest of the package is more subdued than similarly nutty AMG models. Ironically, while many Audi enthusiasts pine over the cars they hope to import – this author included – the reality is that this RS4 simply outperforms each and every one of those cars is just about every measurable way, and is available for sale today:

As much as it pains me to say so, buying a U.S. spec RS4 makes a lot more sense than trying to import any number of European-spec Audis. The B7 chassis – especially with the quattro GmbH upgrades – is an impressive chassis to drive; smooth, confident and fast. The RS4 was undoubtedly the ultimate expression of this chassis, and with great looks, huge brakes, stiff yet compliant suspension and that incredible motor this is a hard package to beat. There is no mention of maintenance, and I’d wager that the car will need carbon deposit cleaning, but it’s clean and the Daytona Grey Pearl-effect over light grey leather is a great combination.

At $37,000, it’s not the cheapest RS4 we’ve seen – but when it comes to these cars, it’ll be much better to buy a good one even if it’s a few dollars more. Hold out for the color combo you want (I’ll take the one Viper Green one, please!) and jump on board with this modern classic; it’s hard to predict, but I could easily see these RS4s achieving cult-like status in a few decades and being one of the next E30 M3s.

Wagon Week: Quattro GmbH specials – S6 Plus Avant and RS4 Avant

509

The other day Paul wrote up perhaps the most desired wagon that was never imported to the U.S., the Audi RS2. While it’s true that car is massively awesome in just about every way, there is a second, lesser known quattro GmbH special wagon that would be the one I’d try to import first. While the RS2 is getting tantalizingly close to importation-legal status, we’re still a few years away on what is my favorite fast Audi wagon, the C4 Audi S6 Plus. They’re not common at all with less than 900 Avants produced, and most reside in the motherland – but they are also ridiculously inexpensive for what they are. With the same 32 valve V8 motor as the original S8 pushing 320hp, a six speed manual, awesome S6 Plus only-alloys and draped in RS Blue over RS Blue suede, it doesn’t get much better than this for me:

For $7500, this car just seems like a steal. Not only that, but it’s not the only one available! There are several that you can choose from at any given time, all around the same price and same mileage. This car makes me want to call my friends in Germany and have them stick it in a container even though I’d not be able to register it for a bit. But not everyone wants an older V8 Audi wagon (who are these people???). For some of them, the limited run original RS4 is the object of desire:

509

A chunked-up Cosworth-motored S4 Avant, the RS4 has been desired and copied by Audi fans in the U.S. to no end. It amazes me the length that some owners will go through to copy this car; to do it right, you’re looking at $10,000 – $15,000 worth of body work alone. Guess what? You can buy a real one for that amount:

We featured an imported RS4 a few months back for a ridiculous price. Granted, that particular model was already here, federalized and left hand drive, but if you’re willing to wait, RS4s are currently fairly cheap – on par with U.S. spec S4 Avants in similar condition. This isn’t the car I’d run to choose; there are several other Audis I’d want to import before this – original non-turbo Coupe Quattros, 20V RR Quattros, the RS2, S2 Avants, and 6 speed V8 Quattros all hit my list before this car. But, as I always say, it’s not all about me.

Which would you choose?

V8 Week: 2003 Audi RS6

In the rarefied world of German super-sedans, the launch of the Audi C5 RS6 took the category to a new level. With 450 turbocharged horsepower on tap, this was a super car in disguise capable of destroying the competition in stoplight drag races and high-speed Autobahn blasts while offering comfort for 4 people and being useable year-round in any weather event. Try that with your Lamborghini, Ferrari, or even pre-Panamera Porsche. Like most super-sedans, once the warranty was up the residual value fell quicker than the massive brakes could haul it down from speed, and now these beasts can be had in prime condition for not much money. Today’s 2003 example looks particularly stealthy in popular Ebony Black:

My 2003 Audi RS6 MTM is for sale. I am the third owner and have owned the RS6 for about 3 years. This car was a present from me to me and was appreciated more as a piece of art than a form of transportation. That would explain the low miles I’ve put on it during our time together (about 4,000 miles). All previous owners are from around Tampa Bay area.

When it comes to maintaining my baby, expenses are never spared, as I like to keep all of my vehicles in immaculate condition. My Ebony Black RS6 is fully loaded with every possible option including:

· Ebony Black interior with

· Alcantara® and

· Carbon Fiber

· Navigation

· Satellite Radio

· Sport Exhaust with Black Tips

· Cold Weather package with

· Solar Sunroof

Additionally, my precious RS6 had some work done by the MTM go-to-guys, Hoppen Motorsport in Sarasota, FL. There, it received the MTM upgrades done. These upgrades increased the numbers to over 500HP and a top speed of over 185MPH. I have never had the desire to find out what 185 MPH feels like as I am plenty scared of the RS6 at regular speeds.

Additional Items:

During my ownership, the following items were repaired or replaced:

Dunlop Sport 245 / 45ZR18 96Y XL High Performance RunFlat Tires
The alternator was replaced
Both Intercoolers were refurbished
Both MAF sensors were replaced
Vacuum lines were replaced
Recall about the fuel tank was also performed at Crown Audi of Clearwater
New Battery was installed by Crown Audi of Clearwater
Oil changed with about 9000 miles before next service

The winning bidder will have ten ( 10 ) business days to finalize the deal, that is two ( 2 ) weeks. Deposit is non-refundable and is to be sent via PayPal. The rest of the funds are to be exchanged at the time of pickup in the form of a Cashier’s Check (certified from US bank) or CASH in person.

Please ask any questions you might have.

This particular example has been modified by the Hoppen gang with MTM software, giving this car a bit more scoot (as if it needed that). Long term there are plenty of items to be concerned about, but the amount of performance you get for low 20s is pretty incredible. At least on the highway and back roads, this is a car that can keep up with a similarly priced M5, surprise it from most stoplights, and be useable when the sun isn’t shining. Sure, you lose the manual that the M5 has, but you gain the best part of 100 horsepower. For some folks, that’s what matters more – being able to toast that 911 turbo out of the tollbooth. Having driven a few of these on the track (along with E39 M5s), they’re also quite capable of holding their own against an M5 if properly driven, though they tend to run out of brake and overwhelm their tires earlier than the boys from Munich.

We would be remiss in not featuring an RS6 in V8 week, since it’s one of the more spectacular versions of a V8 platform that’s been available to US buyers in recent history. Ownership won’t be cheap or trouble-free, but honestly once the horsepower numbers crest 300, the bills will start adding up on any 10 year old car regardless of the badge that’s on the back. If you’d like to take the road slightly less traveled than the E39 Highway, this may just be the car for you!

V8 Week: 2007 Audi RS4

When we at GCFSB.com wanted to do another theme week, we really wanted to cross marques, and what better way than with a engine layout that is used pretty universally? Audi started it’s love affair with the V8 engine back in 1988-1989 with the release of the then-revolutionary V8 quattro. Boasting reasonable performance, high-class luxury, and go-anywhere in anything quattro all-wheel drive, the V8 quattro would become a cult-classic for Audi fans. Since then Audi’s V8 engine has increased slightly in displacement and sprouted more valves, but the heart of these cars has most been assisted by modern electronics that allow cars like the RS4 to pump out an incredible 420 horsepower. Though they more recently have backed away from V8 engines in an effort to gain fuel economy, Audi’s legendary RS4 V8 was shouty and sonorous at the same time, producing notes that few other engines can on the way up the tachometer. And while there are few RS4s who’s exterior match the shoutiness of the engine, today’s example of a Sprint Blue RS4 is shouty for all the right reasons:

Blue has been the choice for fast Audis since the launch of the legendary RS2. Sure, that blue has changed from RS Blue to Nogaro, and then again to Sprint Blue on the B7s, but the idea remains the same. Like a red Porsche, pulling up anywhere in one of these blue Audis tells the world you mean business, but in a mostly polite way. The RS4 is an incredible performer with reasonable practicality as a daily driver, but is certainly special enough to stand out in the crowd. In my opinion, too many of these cars were specified in silver, grey or black – to me, they just look better in loud colors. The only one I have seen that I desire more than this car is the one special order Viper Green RS4; but day to day, this would do nicely, thank you very much.

The best known issue with the RS4 is carbon buildup, and worryingly there is no mention of this car being serviced, though most of the RS4 community seems to feel that service price is less of a big deal than the community that doesn’t own them. Either way, plan on getting it corrected in the future. It’s nice to see the original alloys which seemed to disappear quickly from many; here’s a hint – we’ll want them in the future, so if you buy this car please keep them! Otherwise the car seems to be in great shape as it should for the quite reasonable mileage that’s been put onto it. Pricing seems pretty much spot on the middle of the market, and as the blue seems to command a premium over some of the other colors I’d say in the higher 30s this car is pretty well bought.

2001 Audi RS4

In the 1980s, it was a heck of a lot easier to get European spec cars into the U.S., as witnessed by the still substantial amount of them that can be found for sale. Most were European market BMWs and Mercedes-Benz models that weren’t available here, although cars from France, Italy, Japan and even South Africa also made it in. But as rules tightened and U.S. product line offerings improved and expanded, owner importation of cars from Europe slowed down. Now, it has become labor intensive and expensive to bring one of these models over, to the point where many enthusiasts spend countless dollars recreating Euro-spec cars rather than federalizing one from Europe. The Audi RS offerings before the RS6 are perfect examples of this; many Audi fans have built their own RS2 (in coupe guise) and RS4 replicas from U.S. spec cars. There were some die-hard individuals, however, who were not dissuaded from the difficulties of importing the “real deal” cars. If I had gone through that trouble it would be for a car I was never going to sell again; but lucky for us, some of these newer imports come up for sale from time to time. Today’s RS4 is an example of one such rarity:

The Bennetts are well known in Audi circles and have always had top-notch offerings at equally top-notch prices. $75,000 for a 12 year old Audi wagon is certainly top dollar, especially when these cars market for generally $15,000 to $20,000 in very good condition in Europe. Replica RS4s built on U.S. spec chassis, like the black one Paul recently reviewed, tend to be hitting the market between $40,000 and $50,000, which is already a massive premium over a good condition B5 S4 avant, which will set you back less than $20,000 for the very best examples. For the asking price, I’d expect the original and valuable RS4 alloys to be on there in perfect condition, and I’m not sure having it modified really helps the pricing; if anything, I’d think it detracts from it slightly. In general people wanting this car at this price point want to do it their way, not follow someone else’s vision.

Now, before you say “I can build one for less than that”, I’m not sure you can. To do the body right will set you back $15,000-$20,000. Add in the engine mods, upgraded suspension, brakes and wheels, and you just built yourself a $65,000 S4 if you started with a very nice example. In that light, the 2Bennett car isn’t outlandishly priced, especially considering it carries the Quattro G.m.b.H. build title. It’s also one of only a handful here right now, and that pushes the value up slightly. Despite this, I think you’ll start seeing more people serious about wanting one of these importing them from Germany over the next few years given the gap in value. If it were me and I had to have a fast B5 fix, I’d buy a 1.8TQA sport, chip it, and put the remaining $70,000 into the bank to wait a few years for values to fall a touch more and a few more to appear over here. But, if you have to have a real B5 RS4 right now in the U.S., this is just about your only option.
