I’ve looked at my fair share of Mercedes-Benz G-Wagens here. From the rusty 1985 280GE for $12,950 to the street-legal monster truck 2017 G550 4×4² for over $250,000, I’ve covered nearly all of them. They all make sense in one way or another as you can basically find a G to do anything you really need it to do. Need a military vehicle? Here is a 1991 230GE. How about a fire truck? Another 1991 230GE. Topless beach cruiser? I’ve got a 1992 300GD for you. But this 2001 G500 3-door for sale in Hampshire, England is a mystery to me and I wish I knew the full story. Right Hooker Week: 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLC180

The next Mercedes-Benz up for our Right Hooker Week is a total odd ball that never made it to North America and thank goodness it didn’t. This is a 2010 CLC180. Mercedes calls it a ”SportCoupé” that was an evolution of the W203 hatchback coupe that we (unfortunately) did get in North America. Naturally, when you look at this car you’d think it was a just W204 hatchback coupe. Not the case. In fact, it wasn’t even made in Germany. Let’s dig deeper.

This isn’t a W204, it is still a W203. Mercedes did everything in their power to make you think it was a new chassis, but it wasn’t. They tacked on a front and rear clip to make it look like a (then) new W204 but the majority of this car is still the old W203, especially inside. Yes, the car got a slightly tweaked suspension and a bunch of parts bin stuff for the interior, but it is still largely the same old car that launched over 10 years ago in 2000. What is even more interesting is that these were built in Juiz de Fora, Brazil where Mercedes has a factory that built the A-Class and you guessed it, the W203 C-Class. Powering this CLC180 is the M271 1.8 liter supercharged four cylinder that made a disappointing 143 horsepower. Not exactly something to write home about, but then again that wasn’t the goal with this car.

As for this specific example for sale in Surrey: it looks fine. Yeah, it has some stains on the seats and has a brand of tires tyres called Tigar that are made in Serbia, but it is what it is with this car. This is a seven year-old Mercedes for 4,990 ($6,469) and this is what you get. This was a first Mercedes for a lot of buyers and the brand was willing to take the hit on these to have the owners come back in three to five years to move up to buy an E-Class or ML-Class. The thing is, it worked pretty well. Mercedes said over 40 percent of buyers of these actually came back to move up to other models and frankly, I’m surprised. Personally if one of these were my only Mercedes experience, I’d want nothing to do with the brand after owning this thing, but then again maybe the opposite happened and people couldn’t wait to jump into an E-Class as soon as they could.

Right Hooker Week: 1996 Mercedes-Benz S280

Back for round 2 for a Mercedes from across the pond: I present to you a little bit of an odd-ball S-Class and at the same time, an infamous one. This is a 1996 S280, a car that North America was never graced with because of it’s rather spartan equipment — if you could even use that term when talking about a S-Class. This W140 is graced with the wonderful Malachite Green paint and even better 18 inch Eltanin wheels. Surprising to me, despite how great everything looks, this S280 is really cheap. How cheap?

Exterior Features
This Mercedes S280 is solid and the general condition of the paint work is great, with the exception of very few age related marks. The wheels are 18″ Mercedes alloys and they all have recently changed, low profile tyres with a good amount of tread depth.

Interior Features
The interior of the S-Class is renouned for its luxury feel and comfort during every journey. This example has lots of features which add to the comfort, including double glazed windows, heated beige leather seats, cruise control, automatic windscreen wipers, electric windows, central locking and centre arm rest. Considering the car was built over 24 years ago, it has more optional extras than most cars do today!

Service History
There are some service receipts and previous MOT certificates present with the vehicle, although the service book has been lost over time. The current MOT has no advisory items on the certificate, and the previous certificate had no advisories either.

More Information
This is a great example of a classic Mercedes, which is still just as much of a pleasure to take out on the road now as when new. The transmission is smooth and the engine is responsive. The car is HPI clear and there are two keys present.

Taking a close look at this W140, you get the M104 2.8 liter inline-6 engine that isn’t under powered per se, but it probably feels a little weak if you are used to driving these with the V8s or even better, the V12. What is interesting to me about this car is that it comes with manual seats. I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a W140 with manual seats, if ever. My guess is that this was one of the things you gave up when you bought the S280. You still get everything else you’d normally see in a W140 with heated seats, automatic climate control, and power everything else. I really love the 18 inch Eltanin wheels that someone added after the fact and they really suit this car well. One more thing is that this car has a S600 grill which is basically a must do modification for any W140.

Like I mentioned in my opening, the S280 has an infamous past in England as it was the car that Diana, Princess of Wales was killed in on August 31, 1997. (Wear your seatbelt, kids!) Although the car she was riding in was actually a left hand drive S280 registered in France, every time I see a S280 it brings back those memories. One of the things I’ve been wondering for a long time is that if Mercedes saw a drop in W140 sales after the accident due to the massive impact it had on the world.

So how cheap is this car? A mere £2,499! (That’s just over $3,250) I’ve bought a lot of Mercedes in this price range over the years and none have come close to how nice this one is. It’s not like this S280 has a ton of miles either with just 103,000. Dollar for dollar, I mean pound for pound, you are getting a ton of car here. Like I mentioned with the C43 AMG, keep it away from the salt and it should stay nice for a long time. But for this cheap, maybe it’s not such a big deal?

RHD 1988 BMW 325iT

It has begun! The 25-year importation mark has been hit for 1988 cars, which, in my humble opinion, was an absolutely fantastic year for European cars. E30 wagons always get a lot of attention on this side of the pond because of their rarity and damn good looks. Today’s is a little rough around the edges, but I love the Malachite Green and the cloth interior. It seems every US BMW came with leather, but the cloth interior has worn better than the ever-cracked 80s BMW leather and looks proper. We may be on the cusp of a large influx of these Euro-only models, but for now they’re still rare and getting a ton of bidding attention. If you can deal with driving like a postal worker (or are one), this would be a slick ride.

If you know anything about E30 BMWs, you know how rare this car is in the US. I owned this car for about 2 years while living in the United Kingdom and have recently imported it back. The car has a March 1988 manufacture date and was legally imported under the 25+ year old provision just last month, September 2013. The car is fully registered in Oklahoma with a clear title in my name. I have not swapped the plates out yet, but I have included a picture of the OK plate. I am unsure how I would want to mount the plate so I will leave that up to the new owner.

Overall, the car is very solid, but not perfect. It is 25 years old after all. The paint has a couple of issues. There is a scratch down the right (driver’s) side of the car. The sunroof has some scratches. The hood has a scratch and an area where the clear is peeling. One of the rear quarters also has a small area of clear peeling as well as a ding in a couple of scrapes. There is rust in the lower portion of the drivers front fender. The wheel arches and corners of the windshield are all rust free as can be seen in the pictures. I have tried to picture all the blemishes, no matter how minor. Please take a good look at them. If you need a picture of anything else, please let me know.

Mechanically the car is spot on. I have not had any issues in the time I’ve owned it other than the starter needing replacing. I would not hesitate to drive it on a cross country road trip. It has been lowered slightly, I’d say 15-20mm. Looks good and doesn’t ride rough. The headlight wash/wipe doesn’t work. There is a common problem with the motors needing taken apart, cleaned and re-greased. Everything is there though.

The interior is clean and damage free. The seats work as they should. The metal rod that holds the load bay cover has separated from the cover, so it cannot be closed. It just needs putting back in and the cover glued back together. This is how it was done at the factory, just needs redoing.

Very unique combo with the color, lower valences, wheels, and right-hand drive. The driving position may throw some people off, but at the same time a fresh coat of Malachite and taking care of some of the details could make this a very unique car at your local BMW show.

RHD 1982 Volkswagen Polo For Sale

I am a sucker for imported cars.  Somewhere in the rat trap that is my mind this equation exists, Euro stuff>Stuff we can get here.  It can be anything, if it comes from Europe is has to be better, right?  I mean why else would we be paying $1,000 for this?  OK, that I actually get.

Anyhow, here we have a 1982 Volkswagen Polo.  The owner states it is the only one in the states, which is, um, false.

As great looking as this car as this is, and it is beautiful.  It is packing a 1.3L mated to a 4 speed transmission.  That is going to be sluggish, like Zastava slow.  I can think of a lot of other cars I would rather drive for $10k.

But, it’s imported so by all means I completely understand the cool factor here.  Now, about that Jamon…
