Tuner Tuesday: 2006 BMW M5 Dinan 5.8

Nate’s look at the E34 and E39 Dinan M5s over the past week is a poignant reminder of the factory-backed performance available in these super sedans. In the best style of “Q-Ships” – World War II merchant ships that hid surprising armament behind their docile exterior – they’re turned up but never outrageous. When it came to the E60 chassis though, with 500 horsepower on tap how did one increase the already world-beating performance? In Dinan’s case, there was no replacement for displacement, as they punched out the 5 liter V10 to 5.8 liters. The result was an additional 100 horsepower and around 80 lb.ft more torque while still maintaining the stratospheric redline. Yet that insane performance was available in a wrapper which looked no different than a standard M5:

1991 BMW M5 Dinan 3.9 – Revisit

The E34 M5 may be the least-loved of the breed, but who is going to argue with a 3.9 liter stroker S38? I adore my S38B35, and the thought of a torquier, gnarlier Dinanified inline-6 with an extra pint of volume makes me tingle. This Calypso Red M5 has made the rounds, first selling on BaT in 2012 for a relative pittance before spending the last year-plus trying to spin a profit. The speculative seller has repainted it but accrued fewer than 1k miles, making clear his intentions to cash in on a rare, tuned M-car. The reality that E34s aren’t appreciating like E30s or E38s has apparently begun to set in, as he’s asking now asking $6,500 less than in 11/2014. If you’re looking for a monster E34, this is probably the way to go. But when you could be getting an E39 with 60 more horsepower and a generation newer everything, does anyone like the E34 enough to pay the premium? I’m guessing the seller is going to have to have more patience or less pride before this M5 can start spinning its wheels again with a real driver.

Tuner Tuesday Mega Tuner Showdown: Dinan v. AMG v. Treser v. Alpina v. Ruf

I’m always a fan of the showdown posts; no surprise, since I think I’m the only one who does them here! While it’s nice to highlight one car at a time, I’m just a fan of the opportunity costs; considering what my money could go towards otherwise. Plus, though we see comparisons of new cars in magazines and online fora, it’s not often that we have comparos including nearly 40 year old cars. While I usually highlight this type of comparison in my 10K Friday posts, today is a bit different and I believe the first time I have a showdown on Tuner Tuesday. I’ve rounded up a quintet of neat cars that are all modified from stock by some of the most famous tuners of the 1980s; which is the winner?

Tuner Tuesday: 1988 BMW 535i Dinan 3.9

The E28 is a great chassis, no doubt, but often the normal 535i gets overlooked as a potential classic. We search out instead examples of the M5-look 535is or indeed the S38-motored legend itself, but today’s example will give those that dismiss the “normal” 535i a reason for pause. Upgraded with the full repertoire of Dinan bits and given a European specification makeover and repaint, this is one seriously good looking and well built 535i:

Heap of the Week: 1995 Audi S6 Avant

When opportunity knocks, sometimes you should answer the door; this may be one of those cases, especially if you’re a fan of fast Audi wagons. The Audi S6 Avant has been a cult classic since new; near bullet-proof engines capable of monster power, all-wheel drive in a slick package, a manual gearbox and room to carry enough to satisfy even Hannibal’s trips to Italy, the S6 is a unique package that relied underscored Audi’s mission in the 1980s and 1990s – they were different than everyone else, but in a very good way. Sure, if you want pure driving bliss on switchbacks or near-silent Autobahn cruising, BMW and Mercedes were better options in those specific cases – but as an all around package, the S6 Avant had no peers in the marketplace. That didn’t translate into overwhelming sales – but the exclusivity has if anything bolstered the legend of the Avants and artificially increased demand. How much has demand increased? Take a look at the bidding on this S6 Avant – at time of writing with 4 days left and the reserve still on, it’s $8,100. That may not sound particularly shocking until you find out that the motor is blown:

Tuner Tuesday: 2008 BMW M3 Dinan/Hartge

In the wonderful world of tuning, there’s taking it to the edge, and then there’s stepping over the edge. For every tasteful example of a tuner-modified car, it seems that there are several that take it one (or many) steps too far, creating a bit of a monstrosity in the process. While modifying cars is and will always be a form of individual expression, tuning firms always attempt to produce what will sell, not necessarily what is in the best taste. In the spirit of this, today I want to look at a car which I feel was taken a few steps too far; a 2008 Dinan and Hartge modified M3:

Indeed this is not your ordinary M3, and I was able to write that without caps lock on. In fact, I don’t think you’d need to write that this wasn’t your ordinary M3 if you just look at it. There are so many items that are to like here, and well engineered components at that. First, there’s the superb M3, made even more superb in the beautiful shade of Interlagos Blue. You could have stopped there, and I would have been sold. Then there are the Dinan upgrades; well, who doesn’t like a bit more power? How about one hundred bits? The Dinan upgrades also extend to the transmission reflash and rear end. Okay, I’m still on board. We move on to the Active Autowerks exhaust. I’ve heard these cars opened up, and it’s pretty glorious. Haven’t lost me yet.

Then there are the Hartge bits; wheels, rockers, bumper add-ons and roof spoiler. It’s here where I start to loose some enthusiasm for this build; these items are a bit too blingy and take a bit away from the understated performance of this car. Still, they’re Hartge pieces, and that carries some weight, so I’m not completely lost. However, the shouty “Hartge” custom graphics, the custom painted engine cover, the pedal set, badges everywhere….I just don’t know, it seems akin to digitally inserting Jabba the Hutt into the original Star Wars. Does it add anything? No, you’re just sitting there saying “Okay, I get it, you just wanted to show off that you have money and can do whatever you want”. It goes even farther downhill for me from there, with a few more badges and names thrown into the pile. It’s as if the owner decided to make a sunday at Cold Stone Creamery and added every single item from the toppings menu. Sure, it may taste great for a bite, but in the end you just have a brown pool of melted ice cream with gummy bears and soggy oreo bits floating all over.

While I have no doubt that the asking price of this car doesn’t come close to claimed $100K build costs, the reality is that I don’t really see much value in this car over a stock ZCP car. For all it’s Hartge bragging it’s not a Hartge, and doesn’t identify as a Dinan either, and that leaves it a bit of a “dog’s breakfast” to quote Clarkson. That’s sad because it has all of the right ingredients; I just really wish they hadn’t dumped all of them in at the same time. What do you think?

1988 BMW M3 – stroked and supercharged

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 11.58.23 AM

Sub-$20k E30 M3s are nearly impossible to find these days. While the ideal would be to find one completely stock and with decent mileage, the real supply lies in modified M3s. If you can find one in decent enough shape with mods you don’t hate, it could be the way to go. Today’s was subject to a minor collision resulting in a rebuilt title, but comes with goodies like a stroker kit, supercharger, and Alpina wheels. If everything checks out straight, being one two-dollar bill short of $20k could make this a fun and stunning purchase for someone trying to jump on the E30 M3 rocket ( /possible bubble).

Up for sale is my baby, 1988 BMW M3 E30! I’ve had this car for almost 7 years. Since I purchased the car, had the upgrades done, such as 2.5 liter engine with VAC Motorsport Stroker Kit. Eibach lowering kit, Koni shocks, sway bar kit by “Suspension Techniques.” The front seats have been completely redone, Alpine CD player and sound system. Factor options such as power windows and power locks, power sunroof, air conditioning, digital information center and more! The car sits on 17″ Alpina wheels and almost brand new tires. Rear spoiler wing, front bumper add on lip spoiler. Eisenmann exhaust system.

Supercharger Kit IMA throw made by RMS (hard to find). Miller War Programmable chip. When I purchased the vehicle it had a rebuilt title (due to minor accident)! So I’m selling it also as a rebuilt title vehicle.

This seems like an M3 that has been well-loved if not fully respected; it could be a lot worse. Remove the stickers and poorly-placed Alpina emblems and you have a good looking, crazy-fast E30 M3 that would be the envy of every enthusiast passing by. Is a rebuild-titled car worth $20k? I have a feeling a year or two from now that won’t even be a question.
