Wait. Treser?

Yes, Walter Treser, creator of the most outrageous Audis in the 1980s probably deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the most famous tuning firms in the 1980s. After all, it was Walter who helped to create the Audi Quattro in the first place – but he didn’t stop there. Far from it! He built the first 250 horsepower Audi, the first convertible modern Audi, the first off-road inspired model to wear four rings. He also pre-dated Audi’s Avant in turbocharger form and stuck a huge chunk in the middle to create the first long wheel base out of Ingolstadt to compete with the Mercedes-Benz SEL. And when he was done with all of that, shortly before he folded to economic pressures in the early 1990s, Treser’s firm made a crazy mid-engine aluminum roadster, too. Despite the innovative technology and designs, finding Treser models in the U.S. today is very rare. Heck, finding just parts for a Treser is very rare. So when a whole Superpfeile model comes up for sale we should take notice!

I’m always a fan of the showdown posts; no surprise, since I think I’m the only one who does them here! While it’s nice to highlight one car at a time, I’m just a fan of the opportunity costs; considering what my money could go towards otherwise. Plus, though we see comparisons of new cars in magazines and online fora, it’s not often that we have comparos including nearly 40 year old cars. While I usually highlight this type of comparison in my 10K Friday posts, today is a bit different and I believe the first time I have a showdown on Tuner Tuesday. Fired Up Quattro: 1982 Audi Quattro

Obviously I’m the big Quattro fan here at GCFSB, and I’ve carefully tried to track nearly every example that comes to market in the U.S.. I was frankly a bit surprised to see this one pop up, as it comes from a fellow enthusiast who has really enjoyed using the car as a collectable show car over the past few years. Wednesday Wheels Roundup

I think it’s quite fair to say that vintage Audi parts are quite hard to come by and they’re probably the least supported aftermarket manufacturer in the realm of German cars. Compared to the amount of vintage Volkswagen, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and BMW parts floating around, it’s just downright rare to come across period correct vintage Audi pieces. Today I’ve assembled a few rare to see bits, plus a neat and inexpensive wheel set if you’ve got a Q7. The Treser wheels are just mega-cool; directionally veined, they where cutting edge back in the early 1980s and the signature of the aftermarket tuner. Unfortunately, they’re metric sized only – so you’re going to have to pay a lot of tires, but they’re available at least. The seller’s claim that they never come up for sale is a bit off base as we typically see them about every six months, and the condition of these wheels isn’t the best – so the asking price is well out of line. However, they’re always neat to see. I’m not a fan of the styling of the Treser steering wheel but it’s period correct and different from the typical Momo or Nardi wheels. The middle wheel I’ve never seen and can’t identify; do you know the model? The Votex Q7 wheels are a twist on the normal wheels but very neat – and in this case quite cheap for a 19″ OEM wheel set. And finally, the Nardi Audi Sport wheel is one of my favorite. They’re always expensive but very cool to see and set off early B2 Audis well. Which is your favorite?

Tuner Tuesday: 1987 Audi Quattro Treser

Need something to tow with your recently acquired Audi Service Van? What better item than a proper Audi Quattro. But this isn’t just any Quattro – not that they’re particularly common in any event. No, this is one of the uber-rare Treser cars. Treser cars are certainly polarizing, and much like the extreme tuners of the day such as DP and Koenig the Treser cars look pretty dated now. However, when they’re well presented they still look neat, a glimpse into a time period that many want to forget. Apparently, this seller wanted to forget it so much he reverted this Treser to it’s original Audi panels. For that, most of us are thankful:

4WD Week Tuner Tuesday: 1986 Audi Quattro Treser Roadster – REVISIT

Back in August, I wrote up a pretty popular and hugely wild Treser Roadster. With such a small market interested in these cars, it’s no wonder that it’s still available today on Ebay.de. Unfortunately, if you were counting pennies last time to make this happen, the currency conversion hasn’t gone your way, because while it’s still priced at 34,999 Euros, that today will cost you about $1,500 more than it did in August. Still, at less than half the price of a decent Sport Quattro this is a pretty unique piece of Audi history and would look great in some snowy shots – any brave souls out there?

Not satisfied with the already exotic Audi Quattro he had helped to create, Walter Treser went on a mission to take the Quattro to the next step. His cars featured bespoke TRX wheels (the largest available to the mass market at the time), upgraded 250 horsepower engines (more boost – that could never go wrong!), and perhaps the largest chin spoiler fitted to any road car ever. Seriously, this is the Jay Leno of cars. Treser also revised the interior, rear spoiler and rear bumper cover, and for the exclusivity of one of these gems, he upgraded the price tag substantially. For some, even the Treser Quattro wasn’t enough, and for 39 lucky and wealthy individuals who just had to take it to the next level, Walter cooked up one of the stranger conversions ever done to an Audi at that point; he chopped the top and made a folding hardtop. The Treser Roadster marketed for the equivalent of around $125,000 in 1986. Rare doesn’t begin to describe these cars, but every once in a while one pops up for sale, like today’s Pearlesant White Treser in Germany :

If you had to have the ultimate non-Sport Quattro in the 1980s, this was your car. It is over the top in nearly every way. It certainly isn’t to everyone’s taste, but many of the modified cars from the 1980s weren’t. As Rick James said, “Cocaine is a hell of a drug.” Compared to some of the modified Porsches and Mercedes, the Treser cars were downright pedestrian and civilized; but next to the original, this car looks outrageous. Interestingly, I think this car ends up looking more Japanese than German, but to the right buyer, I doubt that would matter.

The car’s condition appears to be good and it’s not surprising that the top is not functioning, but the seller has promised to fix prior to the sale at full amount. Still, like older modified cars, there is a lot to go wrong here, so be prepared for plenty of visits to the mechanic to sort it out. Like the TRX wheeled BMWs, plan on getting different wheels and saving those original Tresers for show only. The driver’s side headlight seems to be at an odd angle, but that could be an easy fix; Pearlesant White is so difficult to color match and that bumper is so rare, I doubt it saw an impact that wouldn’t show in the photos.

Even among the die-hard Audi aficionados, the Treser cars are polarizing. $46,600 is top dollar for a Quattro that isn’t a sport, but these cars are so rare it’s hard to put a value on it. There are very few originals left, and even fewer in Pearlesant white. In comparison to some of the rare convertible Mercedes and Porsches from the 1980s, this isn’t outlandish money, and the Quattro values have steadily been on the rise over the past decade. As a 1986, it’s eligible for import to the U.S. without too much difficulty, so the question is – will you be the only one in the U.S. with one of these cars?

Afternoon Accessories: Original Treser Turbo wheels

If you’re into rare Volkswagens, then you’re probably into rare Volkswagen wheels. One of the rarest you can get are the TRX variety wheels made by Ronal for Treser. Known mostly for their outrageous Audi products, the Treser wheels are a neat period-correct detail if you really want to stand out from the crowd. You’re not seeing things in that photo above; they’re directional left and right:

Very rare: set of TRESER Turbo Wheels for every VW with 4 X 100 Wheels i.e. Golf/Rabbit/Jetta Mk1, Golf/Jetta Mk2/3, Scirocco Mk1/2, Passat Mk1/2 etc. They were made by Ronal/Germany.

The size is 155mm X 365mm (similar to 6,5″ X 14,4″). You have to use metric tires Michelin TRX 190/55 HR 365 or 200/55 HR 365.

Two caps are missing, but they are of course useable without them.

Set consists of 2 right wheels and 2 left wheels and 2 centre caps.

The bad news is that two of the likely irreplaceable center caps are missing; but you could run them without as the sale notes. Problem two is the tires; TRX tires are still available though pricey through retailers like Coker Tire; a quick check shows two tires are available that would fit, but they’re around $350 per tire. You really have to want these wheels. However, for those not really interested in the limited tire choices, TRX wheels like these make great garage art for the person who has everything, but wants one thing more – or in this case, 4 things more!

Italian Audi Insanity

One of our readers from Italy was kind enough to call attention to a trio of astonishing Audi Quattros for sale online in Italy. We’ve posted some pretty nice Quattros in the past, but these three turn the four-ringed insanity to 11.

First, we have an Audi Quattro Treser hardtop convertible. “A what!?” you say? I know… though I featured a Treser coupe a while back, I had not seen Treser’s convertible creation before. The coupe’s standard hardtop was absolutely mundane compared to the folding weirdness of this Quattro. Walter Treser was the head of development for the UrQuattro and went on to create his own aftermarket Audi business; the success of the parts business allowed him to get even more creative with things like this pre-Benz SLK convertible hardtop. An elegant convertible with the top down, things get a bit weirder when you push the Autobot button… it kind of looks like a Subaru Brat with a tonneau cover. Funky styling aside, I can’t argue with the rarity and inherent coolness in having a coachbuilt UrQuattro. I can argue that there are better places to spend ~$65k though…

We’ll turn the needle up closer to 11 with this next Quattro, another Treser, and a cabriolet at that; but why not throw in a massive widebody kit and some Testerossa-style side strakes for good measure? Instead of a brat, this looks like a stepside truck. With the same funky 2+2 top up, 2-seater top down system, you can bring the family along, as well as hide them when it gets nice out and you need some Italian bird to notice your Ferraudi. Luckily the 2.1 I5 has been brought up to spec too, pumping out 340hp over only 25k km. 78 grand for some truly rare strange.

Here’s where I say the amp went past 11 and got all Marty-in-Doc’s-Garage on me, a perfect red Sport Quattro, 1,050km (652 miles!) on a 220-hp S2 swap. While cool, the Tresers seem cut out for a specific kind of drug dealer, whereas the only thing the Sport Quattro is addicted to is winning. Decipher the German/Italian ad if you can; something about the Sport’s trick Kevlar roof and some other mild mods. The only way this car could kill it any harder would be if Hans Dahlback himself had modified it. 220hp should be plenty of fun, but the S2 can easily attain much more. Lively on that tiny wheelbase, the pitbull of the Quattro family.

The range of $65-$80k for these things makes me think either a) These are even rarer in the rest of the world than I realized or b) cars are extremely expensive in Italy due to taxes and whatnot. I’m guessing it’s a mixture of both. Regardless, three very cool and unique takes on the UrQuattro (though I could only drive the red one).
