2004 Audi S4 cabriolet

509

Who thinks that having an all-wheel drive, V8 powered 6-speed 2 door-4 seat cabriolet is a good idea? Well, I do, for one. Although it might not make sense on paper and is arguably the least popular of the S4 variants, I think the S4 cabriolet is a neat option that Audi offered the market. With a stellar soundtrack, miles of sky above and quattro all-wheel drive to make it a reasonable year-rounder, this is really a unique convertible that can be had on a budget. While not as sexy or sonorous as the RS4 cabriolet, these can also be had for less than a third of the asking price of most of the RS variants, are cheaper to run and frankly offer 90 percent plus of the thrills. Performance bargain? You betcha.

* Light Silver Metallic (Originally $450.00)

I love the color combo; the silver on red combination is just classic. Does the S4 require more maintenance than an A4? Yep. Does it get worse fuel economy? Yep, that too. Does it make sense as a reasonable daily driver? Not really, for most people. But if you want a 4 seat, all-wheel drive V8 6-speed manual convertible for Kia hatchback money, look no further. Keep it in good nick and my guess is that people will be clamoring over these in another 10 years, as they’re a rare performance package that ticks a lot of boxes – but like many Audis, few will have the fortitude to buy one and maintain it. With under 100,000 miles and in great overall shape, this might just be the right one!

10K Friday: The ones everyone wanted! S8 v. 740i Sport v. 560 SEL

509

Two weeks ago I wrote up executive showdown which featured an A8L against a 745i and S500. The general consensus was that while most wanted the Audi, the Mercedes-Benz (though maybe not that particular one) was the better long-term purchase. Personally, I think Audis of this generation sometimes get an unwarranted reputation, but regardless few people really wanted any of these cars as almost all found some earlier generation more appealing. So, run the tape again, this time with the “Greatest Hits”! Let’s start with the Audi:

I can’t deny that I have a serious love affair with the S8. It just looks sooooooo right. This particular example looks splendid in the quite rare Irish Green Pearl and has the preferred look 18″ Avus wheels in good condition from the look of the photos. Interior also looks great, and mileage is low to average for the market. Timing belt service should have been performed so look for that to have been done, and also it appears there is front bumper damage (not uncommon on the low-slung S8), but at below $10,000, this car looks like the best bang for the buck in this group. Older Audis not your thing? How about a classicly styled BMW E38 740i Sport:

VERY NICE 740I M SERIES

509

Not much info, but this car looks splendid in classic black with equally classic M-Parallels. I love the look of these cars, they’re well proportioned and hide their weight cleverly. With around the same mileage of the Audi, this car is a little less complicated overall but consequently also offers less performance. But maybe performance isn’t your thing, and you’d like something a little more “classic” than the BMW? How about the dictator car of choice, a W126 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL?

This is a very clean 1990 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL sedan with 66890 miles. This Mercedes has been very well treated and maintained. This is a fully original Mercedes including the Becker stereo system. This 560 has front and rear seat heaters, and reclining rear seats, which are working properly.

We performed a road test as well as a safety and maintenance service on this vehicle in preparation for sale. The engine runs well and the automatic transmission shifts very nicely. All of the brake pads are in great shape as well. The oil and filters were just changed. I checked the equipment in this car for proper operation. I can verify that all of the following power equipment is working properly: All power windows, power door-locks, power seats, power sunroof, power mirror and antenna. The air conditioning and heat are working. All of the gauges and instrumentation are functioning properly. There aren’t any service or warning lights on.

The pearl grey paint is glossy and brilliant over the entire body. The exterior of this Mercedes is in very nice condition with only minor imperfections. There are some bumpers rub marks, a few bumps and some small scratches, but this car still looks really great. All of the trim is intact and in excellent condition, and the alloy wheels are clean, look great.

The interior has been very well maintained and is in terrific condition. All of the leather surfaces are soft and supple with very little wear, even on the driver side. The carpeting is clean and fluffy throughout this car. There aren’t any rips, holes or damage on the seats or carpeting in this Mercedes. The dash and door panels are in excellent condition without any cracks, fading or other damage. This was a non-smoker owned vehicle and there aren’t any smoke odors or burn marks inside this car.

The title is clear without any liens or encumbrances and is mileage are original. This is a beautiful 560 SEL in excellent condition. I would feel comfortable getting in and driving this Mercedes anywhere.

This Car has pass california smog inspection with no problem.

This 560 looks to be in great shape, and while it’s probably the least exciting of the three there is something that is evergreen about the Mercedes-Benz models from this time period. They still exude luxury and opulence even though many of the features are found on base model Kias now. Truth be told, these cars all are bathed in luxury, and although I’m partial to the Audi, I think all three of these cars are winners and offer their own version of classic German motoring with a healthy dose of luxury on a shoe-string budget.

Which would you prefer?

2002 Audi S6 Avant 6-speed

509

The other day I wrote up a questionably modified 2JZ-GTE swapped M5 that, while it wasn’t to everyone’s taste, had clearly undergone some pricey modifications. Well, today we have another rare ride that has gone under the knife for a pricey swap few engage in. While C5 S6 and RS6s came to the U.S. in automatic-only format, the seller of this 2002 S6 Avant has ripped out the ZF unit and swapped in a O1E 6 speed. The addition of the 6 speed to either an S6 or S8 on these shores sure makes the choice of which fast executive car to buy more complicated! While some of the other mods may not be to your liking, let’s see if we can redeem it a bit:

First things first – while I’m not a fan of the matte white paint, I could probably live with it, if it wasn’t for the wheels. I’ve made it no secret that I’m not really a fan of black wheels, and these horrible units look like something that should be adorning a Chrysler 300 or Dodge Magnum wagon. I can’t stand them. Swap on something from the factory, though – such as these S6 wheels linked below, and the story might change quickly as to how you feel about the rest of the car:

Further, replace the poorly painted grill with an RS6 grill on Ebay and those smoked taillights with some OEM taillights and I think the rest of the car is pretty liveable. Sure, it has a salvage title, so you probably want to delve into why that’s the case and if the repairs – most likely to the front – were carried out correctly, but this isn’t an aluminum A8/S8 so I’d be a little less concerned about that.

The S6 isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and usually that comes down to the transmission. Alleviate that problem and you’ve got a fast large wagon that can be had on a budget. Considering the quotes I’ve seen on manual swaps for the C5 and D2 range from $6,000 to $9,000 having this swap completed not only changes the character of the car but saves the future owner a lot of potential transmission headaches. If you’re feeling brave and can sport for some extra dough to “fix” the modifications, this car could be a stellar deal.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 400SE

Mercedes did this again in the early 1990s with the W140 S class, a technical tour de force that debuted the new 6.0 liter V12 engine and a host of other luxury features such as double glazed windows, sonar parking sensors, power assisted door closing and a heating system that worked after the car was turned off. This was also the first Mercedes-Benz to feature Electronic Stability Control as an option. When it was introduced, it was derided as being too brash and opulent for the times, as the early 1990s brought on an economic downturn. However, with the arrival of its replacement, the W220, people began to lament this car’s passing, as the new car lacked a lot of the substance of the W140. This 400SE short wheelbase for sale in Illinois isn’t the top dog in the W140 range, but with the shorter wheelbase and smaller capacity V8 engine, the running costs will be decidedly cheaper than the more complex, luxurious models in the range.

It’s rather amazing that such an expensive car with reasonable miles can be had for well under $10,000 these days. Sure, certain items will prove costly if they break, but with under 75,000 miles on the clock, there’s a lot of life left in this 400SE. You’re getting a lot of car for your money in a case like this, so factoring in a few thousand over the course of the next few years would still prove less than a new car payment in most cases. Also, considering what you’ll be piloting at the end of the day: one of the most advanced executive sedans of its time that still compares favorably to modern motors.

2004 Audi S4 Avant

509

I’m wondering if I’d rather have a higher mile B5 in my favorite color, or a lower mile B6 as prices continue to sag slightly on the later V8 cars. Despite the slight drop off in these cars’ prices, the Nogaro Blue B6s still seem to carry a premium as do Avant versions – put them together, and you have the pricest of the B6 chassis cars on the market. Today’s example is no exception, with a strong $16,000 asking price on a claimed 1 of 1 2004 Nogaro/Nogaro S4 Avant:

509

2004 AUDI S4 S-4 SPORT AVANT WAGON B6 NOGARO BLUE QUATTRO ULTRA RARE 1 OF 1! WOW

In the questions of the car, the seller is asked about the 1 of 1 claim, which they insist is verified by Audi of America. I’m assuming the 1 of 1 means it’s the only Nogaro Blue with Nogaro Blue interior tiptronic equipped avant sold in the U.S. in 2004. Does that make it worth a premium? Well, last week’s S4 faceoff seemed to indicate that most of you don’t want the automatic. As I stated in the write up though, these tiptronic cars aren’t a bad drive at all and retain most of the fun of the S4 while making a stop and go commute a little easier on the leg muscles.

For relatively top dollar, I’d really want to see a rich service history – were this a $10,000 example, I’d be willing to overlook some flaws but not at top dollar. The exhaust and “K&N” sticker on the intake lead me to believe it was probably owned by an enthusiast, though that isn’t necessarily an indication that it was properly maintained or treated well. I think the asking price is a little high; provided the correct documentation, with 110k I’d like to see this car in the $12,000 to $14,000 range. Despite this, it’s a lot of car for Kia Soul money (even if the Kia does come with a warranty) and if it were actually true that it was 1 of 1, it might just be your only option if you like the combination.

This car is just massively impressive to me. You get a basically new Alpina B7 for 25% less than a brand new one. Most of the B7s I’ve seen are boring black, silver or white; this car stands out and looks spectacular in blue. The wheels are tremendous and transform the look. There are options galore; and if there isn’t enough luxury don’t forget there’s a healthy dose of sport in these B7s, with stiffer but more compliant suspension than the factory and a 500 horsepower motor capable of sub-5 second runs to 60. There is little you’ll meet in your daily commute that will out-luxury or out-accelerate this impressive car. But for some folks, this car is a little too pricey or has a few too many doors. Perhaps this stunning Brabus is a better option:

With an original sticker $25,000 higher than the B7 5 years earlier, this is certainly rarefied air. Like the B7, there are options galore; this car is truly stunning to look at. The wood is immaculate, leather abounds, and the combination of those wheels and the black only hint at the sinister car that this is. The Brabus body upgrades – which can sometimes be in…questionable….taste – fit neatly onto this model. This car doesn’t feature Brabus engine upgrades, so you’ll have to make due with only 510 horsepower and 612 lb/ft of torque – enough to challenge most 911 turbos in 0-60 sprints at 4.4 seconds. Like the Alpina, there is nothing that will out-luxury or out-accelerate you on your daily commute. To make this car even more appealing, with only 50,000 miles on the clock and looking as close to new as a used car can be, this CL 600 is offered at roughly half the price of the Alpina.

Were it my money, I’d find it pretty hard to pass up that sweet looking Alpina, though the price of the Mercedes is pretty enticing. In the long run I’d wager that the Alpina would also be worth more money and cheaper to run, though that’s a bit of a gamble. Which one would you have?

1998 Mercedes-Benz C43

While it wasn’t the first in-house collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and AMG, but the C43 AMG is where the high horsepower madness with the tuning arm began. When the W202 C class debuted, the first to wear the AMG badge was the C36. This sedan was certainly no slouch with 276 bhp. But Mercedes didn’t stop there. For 1998, they C43 appeared with a 4.3 liter V8 under the hood. The car now had 302 horsepower, which wasn’t a huge increase, but the power delivery and soundtrack was addictive. With the C43, Mercedes proved that the old muscle car formula of putting a big engine in the smallest model proved to be alive and well. This black C43 for sale in Utah has just over 100,000 miles and would be a good choice for the speed freak that wants to fly under the radar.

Regrettably, I need to sell my C43 AMG. I moved to Utah several years ago and the car is now a summer driver. I bought another collector car a few years ago and concluded that one of them needs to go to make room in my garage (my winter driver has been sitting outside). I am the second owner of this car, which I purchased from a Mercedes-Benz dealer in 2002 under their certified pre-owned (Starmark) program when it had 33,000 miles. The car came equipped with xenon headlamps with headlamp washers, rain sensing wipers, charcoal colored power adjustable leather sport seats, and moon roof. I installed a trunk mounted six-disc CD player. The car now has 105,500 miles, driven by an adult, non-smoker driver. It has been dealer maintained, is all original (including glass) and is in excellent condition. All scheduled service is up to date (last dealer service May 2013) and I have been meticulous about repairing and replacing needed items as it goes in for service at the dealer. I replaced the tires in July 2013 with four Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I have all service records as well as my original purchase documentation. The interior has very light wear and is unblemished. The car has always been garaged and the original paint is in excellent condition, other than minor paint chips on the front from highway driving. The body of the car is unblemished except for two areas: 1) one minor door ding on the driver rear door that is hard to see unless you look at it from an angle (I tried to capture it in one of the photos) and 2) some curb rash under the front bumper that never bothered me enough to correct (see photo). The wheels are in good condition, but have some delamination around the edges and light scratches that can be seen closer to the car (see photos). The only mechanical need that I can identify is that the driver side rear window recently stopped working. The car runs very smoothly and the engine pulls strongly, as you would expect from 302 hp and 302 lb/ft torque that this AMG V8 produces.

If you are in the market for a C43 AMG and are picky, then this is the car for you! It is getting harder to find clean, well-cared for, unmolested examples in the black-on-black color combination. Please contact me if you have any questions. I have enjoyed owning this car and it”s always a pleasure to talk about it!
Price: $12,000 negotiable

As a former owner of a W202, I can say first hand that these are fairly hearty cars and can cover lots of miles effortlessly in the traditional Mercedes fashion, but a little more power over the four cylinder variant would have been nice. Years ago I looked at these AMG versions in awe and now like most expensive sports saloons. Today, they have settled into a price range that puts them within reach of enthusiasts with more modest means. The price on this example is probably a little high, but it’s good to see that the seller is willing to negotiate.

10K Friday: Seeing Quattro? 1994 S4 v. 2000 S4 v. 2004 S4

509

Last week I wrote up one of the nicest S4s I’ve seen in a while; and like death and taxes, immediately afterwards another popped up. Point to you, Internet Gods. It got me thinking a bit, though; prices of the three first generations are all falling into line with each other, with good examples of early cars rising, B5 generation static and affordable, and the B6 still falling slightly. It offers a unique chance to own one of three cars with the same name, same purpose, and same manufacturer but very different personalities. Today’s 10K Friday then is between the venerable C4 1994 S4, the beloved B5 2000 S4, and the silky smooth B6 S4. Let’s start where it all began with the 1994:

Year: 1994

You are looking at an impressive piece of AWD German engineering that is advanced even by today’s standards. This is an original Audi S car with the 20-valve 5-cylinder turbocharged AAN born of Audi’s World Rally Championship heritage. It is increasingly rare to see this kind of S4 in this condition, color and low original mileage. I am a meticulous Audi enthusiast and have cared for the car accordingly.

Condition:
Mechanical – very good – No fluid leaks, maintenance is up to date, only synthetic oil (either Castrol GTX or Mobil 1) with BG MOA oil additive was used. The timing belt is up-to-date as conveyed to me by previous owner and good to go until 100k miles. I of course had my certified Audi mechanic inspect it anyway upon purchase and he confirmed the condition of the belt (good with no cracks/imperfections) corroborates this. November of last year I flushed all the fluids including brake fluid, transmission fluid and coolant (Audi red). The clutch is original to my knowledge, is tight and in great shape. I only ran Shell, Conoco or Diamond Shamrock premium gasoline.

Notable mechanical repairs under my ownership include: stainless steel brake lines installed, valve cover gasket replaced, starter replaced, new brakes and rotors two months ago, and new power radio antenna. NOTE: Pre-purchase mechanical inspections at local and reputable Audi shops are welcomed at the expense of the interested party provided my schedule will allow it and it isn’t too much of an inconvenience. These must be completed prior to the close of the auction sale.

Interior – Immaculate. No rips, tears, odors or stains. The driver’s floor mat is somewhat worn.

Body – very good condition. No dents or door dings that I am aware of, nor other imperfections. I wash it, wax it and condition the interior leather on a monthly basis if not more frequently.

Paint – Freshly waxed it looks brand new.

Upgrades – I’ve upgraded the brake lines, the wheels to the B5 S4 Avus 17″ wheels (perfect shape), had an aftermarket power antenna installed (black instead of silver) and the balance of the car is OEM.

Features: You get an AWD platform that excels in all weather conditions, a legendary and very reliable power plant in the 20-valve turbo, 5-speed manual transmission, wrapped in a gorgeous body and it comes with every option Audi could dream of for that year. It doesn’t get much better.

History: This is an original Colorado car. The first owner bought it here, retired eventually and liked the car so much he took it to Hawaii with him. After a period of time there, he sold it. I believe I bought it from the second owner there in Hawaii and had it shipped back to Colorado, making me the third owner. I am selling it because I am saving up for a home purchase. This car comes with a clean Colorado title and clean Carfax available upon request. NOTE: This is my daily driver at present and mileage will go up accordingly.

Payment: This sale is an auction-style sale. To retain the vehicle, the winning bidder must provide a non-refundable $500 deposit via Paypal within 24 hours of the conclusion of the auction. The balance of the funds must be paid to me through certified check drawn off a verifiable bank or cash when the agent, shipper or buyer arrives to pick up the vehicle and title no later than one week after the close of the auction sale.

Shipping: I will help out with this as much as is reasonably possible, but the buyer is responsible for all shipping arrangements.

Finally, please feel free to ask me any questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability in as timely a manner as possible. Thank you and good luck!

The “Ur-S”s are loved by there owners and desired by many in and out of the Audi crowd. Although they were really an evolution of the 200, they were a revelation in the all-weather high-performance sedan and wagon category. The seller notes that the AAN is legendary, and these cars are pretty bulletproof through 300,000 plus miles. As we’ve mentioned many times, these cars hit the bottom of the market a few years ago and it has become hard to find clean examples. This particular model is one of the lower mileage examples that has come up for sale recently, and one of the very few that remains nearly stock. I have to admit that Tornado Red isn’t my favorite color on the big-body Audis, and the Avus alloys never seem quite right to me on this generation. Source a set of early D2 18″ Avus wheels (that never came to the U.S. – think the Ronin car), the 17” Boleros I mentioned in the last post, or properly the original 16×8 light and strong Fuchs to correct that problem. With the right wheels, I could probably live with the color. The maintenance and history seem good, so that just leaves the price – a little high to me, but as we’ve stated before – go find another. Maybe the C4 isn’t your thing, and you like the slick packaging of the car that replaced it – the B5 S4:

Check out this older Audi S4 manual transmission car. Overall for a 14 year old car it’s in good shape. An older couple owned the car. The exterior is in decent shape and the same with the interior. This car because of age and mileage is being sold as-is no warranty expressed of implied. This car has not been through our shop and we recommend an independent inspection.

There’s a lot to like here; the color combination, while not the most popular on the B5, looks sharp and fits the car’s profile well. I like the lighter interior to the often-specified black. I’m not a fan of the wheels, though that could be sorted with a quick call to the owner of the above 94. The 2.7 twin-turbo V6 has proven to be pretty reliable through high miles too; I have a friend with a highly modified 2000 that has just crested 300,000 miles with no sign of slowing down. That motor is also nearly as tunable as the AAN, with many pushing 400 plus horsepower. There are drawbacks; the more electronically dependent quattro system in the B5 doesn’t handle high power upgrades or snow quite as well as the more simple earlier C4 and turbo replacement is just about a guarantee on these cars as they get older; that necessitates pulling the motor and is an expensive job. Additionally, the B cars with their 4 link suspension often have a fair share of squeaks and rattles, but it’s nothing that any older German car wouldn’t experience. You could argue, then, that if the original car wasn’t your bag, maybe you should get the newest one you can on a budget – enter the B6 2004 V8 S4:

Before you start in on me, I get that it’s an auto, but these are on the downward swing still and the tiptronic models are in general worth a bit less, so they fall into the 10K category a little more easily. The tip S4s with the V8 don’t have the lag issues the B5 experienced because of the nature of the V8 versus the blown V6 unit, so while it’s not for everyone the tiptronic isn’t as bad for a daily driver as you might think. I love the white on these S4s; they stand out and look properly German and clean. As I mentioned before I’m not as big a fan of the black interiors, though. Like the B5, the B6 has some known engine gremlins that will result in the mill being pulled out, but repairs between the two seem to be about the same cost if not slightly less on the V8.

If it were my money, I think I’d find it hard to pass up the B5. While that C4 is very nice and 9.9 times out of 10 I’d choose the earlier car, like the GTis I wrote up yesterday if I were paying top dollar for a particular model I think I’d hold out for a color I’d prefer as they do still pop up, albeit infrequently. The B5 seems to be the deal of the group; miles, color combo, and platform are right for a daily driver that you can have a lot of fun in on a budget, or modify into your dream RS model. Which would you prefer?

2001 BMW Z8

Screen Shot 2013-10-01 at 8.46.45 PM

The BMW Z8 is one of the most exotic cars I’ve driven, though I recognize it’s pretty mundane on the exotic-car spectrum. Maligned for not having the chassis to back up the looks or the M5’s bonkers S62 V8, I didn’t care as I was not on Dunsfold but raging a few foothill roads behind Palo Alto. Hearing 4.9-liter masterpiece unbuffered by any roof at all is worth it, and then you realize you’re driving a Bond car with looks so good Jaguar stole most of them for the new superstar F-type. At first I thought its 10k miles were a low rarity, but a little more investigation reveals that most of the Z8s for sale have very few miles. This is a shame, as few cars seem more suited for long cruises up and down the coast. I guess they’re mainly garage padding and the owners are ready to cash in, as they regularly sell slightly above their original MSRP.

“Hardtop with a storage cart” makes me laugh, but it’s clear this has been well cared for and has spent the majority of its 12 years inside. 10k miles isn’t the lowest but it’s close, and while almost $133k is big money no matter how you count it, it’s a good price for a Z8 this well cared for. I won’t be buying it, but given the means, I think these cars are underrated and a total blast.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL

The W126 S class was one of those cars that defined an era for Mercedes-Benz. A stately sedan, this car had smooth V8 power and impeccable build quality that made it a legend amongst the world’s elite. They are still a common sight on the roads today, even 22 years after the last one rolled off the line in Sindelfingen, Germany. This top of the line, final year 560SEL for sale in California has under 50,000 miles on the clock. While it won’t turn any heads with its popular for the period Smoke Silver paintwork, the beauty of this car lies in its subtlety.

There seems to be a never ending supply of clean, low mileage 560SLs, but mint SELs are harder to come by, making a one-owner example in impeccable condition like this car rather special. We’ve had a few clean W126s here on GCFSB lately, including a 1991 350SDL (diesel) with 67,000 miles that sold for a little bit over $13,200 and a similar Smoke Silver 1991 560SEL that failed to meet its reserve at $15,900. There doesn’t seem to be a big differentiation in price between diesel and petrol V8 variants, so I’d suspect bidding will probably wind up somewhere between $12,000 and $14,000, given what we’ve seen in recent months.
