Tuner Tuesday Turbo Quattro Coupes: 2004 TT 3.2 quattro HPA Turbo and 2009 R8 4.2 Heffner Twin Turbo

When they launched the original Quattro, Audi redefined how performance could be packaged. With supercar performance but day to day practicality, the Quattro established a niche that made Audi unique amongst not only German manufacturers, but indeed the automotive world. Since then, however, the idea of all-wheel drive and turbocharged platforms have spread not only to sister companies Porsche and Volkswagen, but indeed to Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Opel and even outside Germany to Japan. So Audi once again redefined its packaging; in the case of the TT, they brought expensive styling to the masses, and in the case of the R8, they brought supercar performance and packaging to a 911 budget. But it’s not just Audi that has raised its game; tuning firms are held to much higher standards then they were in the 1980s. Go back and look at some early Callaway turbo setups, for example, and you’ll see what was cutting edge in the 1980s – levels of fit and finish that just aren’t acceptable today, along with driving characteristics not suitable to most owners. Computerized engine management has transformed what is possible in the tuning world to the point where today’s packages often retain OEM-levels of driveability with otherworldly performance on tap. Two great examples of this can be found in HPA’s turbocharged Audi TT and Heffner’s twin-turbocharged Audi R8:

Thanks for looking. I am sadly parting with my faithful car after over a decade of ownership with full service maintenance and smog checks passed.

This is a truly unique vehicle that cannot be compared to other TTs due to its extreme performance (think 911 Turbo S or Corvette Z06).

Not satisfied with the stock performance, I had HPA Motorsport installed their 400 horsepower turbo kit along with many other enhancements.
Being a first of its kind, my car was featured in two magazines: European Car, and Road & Track speed magazine (winner of a 3-way shootout). The results were amazing!

In the following sections, I will outline the current performance figures as officially tested by Road & Track magazine, the standard specifications & features of the car as it was shipped to me, options I added when I ordered the car, then all customized/added parts, turbo kits, and other items I am including.

Current Performance figures:

* 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds
* 1/4-mile run in 12.3 seconds & 113.2 mph
* Braking from 60 mph: 119 ft
* Braking from 80 mph: 215 ft
* 200-ft lateral accel: 0.84g
* 700-ft slalom speed: 64.7 mph

This is certainly one impressive TT; the 3.2 is a great package out of the box, and in this case it’s coupled with a unique color combination of Imola Yellow with blue leather. It’s both striking and well suited to the TT’s design. Throw on the 19″ BBS CH wheels and the look is great in my opinion. I like that it’s the original owner selling the car; it’s been well documented and featured in several magazines. That’s a testament to the staggering performance that HPA managed to extract from the turbocharged 3.2; Porsche 911 Turbo levels of performance in a discrete package. I like, too, that it’s not a show car. Condition is impressive, but the seller importantly is including winter wheels and tires and roof racks to transport your sports equipment. This car was meant to be driven and looks like a great way to have your cake and eat it, too – what the original Quattro was all about! But if 400 horsepower just isn’t enough for your supercar desires, why not up the ante a bit?

You could argue that the R8 4.2 doesn’t really need more performance out of the box, and I’d agree. Having spent some time driving and riding in them on track, they’re simply a wonderful car in stock form. But for some the lure of more power was simply too much; for those well-heeled individuals in need of more motivation, Heffner was all too willing to supply you with not one turbo, but two. The quoted horsepower measured (interestingly) through the rear wheels is 550 – a very healthy gain over the stock 420 crank horsepower. What’s really impressive is the fit and finish of the Heffner kit, though – leagues better than turbo kits of the 1980s. While red isn’t my favorite R8 color, it certainly looks good and I think this is a rare case where the black HRE wheels suit the design well and look special. Only a few years old and with low miles, this seriously upgraded R8 is available for less than half the total investment.

Either of these cars offer performance that punches above their weight class and are neat packaged. Inherently I like the R8 more than the TT, but I think the TT in this case might just be the stunning performance bargain. Still, those off-warranty R8s are starting to get quite cheap and may soon replace the 996 Turbo as the best performance bargain going in the German car world.
