Wagon Week: 2001 Audi S4 Avant

The B5 Audi S4 was one of my first cases of wagon-lust. Great looks with just the right amount of aggression, Quattro and a 2.7l twin-turbo V6 all warped my mind as I dreamed of snow-spraying AWD drifts. Today’s car comes in the standard silver and rides on some good-looking late-model RS4 wheels, although there was nothing wrong with the original and classic Avus 6-spokes either. It’s an automatic, unfortunately, but 6-speed S4 Avants are like finding the unicorn that lays golden eggs. 140k miles will keep the price down and your future costs up, but the seller’s lack of engine modification means it hasn’t endured more stress than normal and means that when the engine does eventually need work, it’s probably time for an RS4 conversion!

Year: 2001
Model: S4 Avant
Engine: 2.7 liter twin-turbo V6
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Mileage: 141,000
Price: Reserve auction, currently at $7,500 with reserve still on.

It’s too bad he chose to shoot with a foggy Kyocera phone at sunset; I bet this thing looks great in person.

This is my well loved and well cared for 2001 Audi S4 Avant. I bought it 6 years ago and it has been my faithful and dependable daily driver ever since. If you are looking at this ad, you probably know about these very desirable performance cars already. Audi LOADED these B5 / S4’s with power everything, including a BOSE premium sound system. The 2.7 BITURBO motor is smooth and powerful, and the QUATTRO full time all wheel drive system delivers control that is unmatched. This is a great driving machine that is amazingly tight and solid, and drives like new – the same as the day I bought it.

This car is very sound. These cars are often modified, but I intentionally kept mine stock for long life and reliability. It was “smogged” in January and passed the stringent California emissions test with flying colors. I am a car enthusiast and have always taken very good care of it, including: ahead of schedule oil changes, regular interior and exterior detailing, garage kept, and I am a non-smoker. My S4 still “shows” very well, and I routinely get questions about it as it’s a great looking cars, and the S4 Avant is very rare in the USA.

The leather interior, carpets, headliner, etc, are all VERY good condition. The AC blows ice cold, and all the power equipment works. Overall this is a very straight car, great to drive as-is, or for an enthusiast to renovate to the next level. The exterior does have a few dings and scratches from city life – but nothing that is too obvious – or that couldn’t be fixed fairly easily if that’s what you chose to do. There are also additional custom rubber floor mats.

Honestly, I would love to keep this car, but I am attending Medical School for the next 3 years, so it’s time to find her a new home. I’m located in San Diego (Mission Bay area) and my preference would be for the buyer to come here to personally look over the car, and take delivery.

I know it may be a cheap sell tactic, but it’s nice to think the owner doesn’t actually WANT to sell the car. Again, the mileage is going to become an issue and makes me wonder where the reserve is. Below $9k this is a good deal on one of my favorite wagons.
