A 1989 Porsche Speedster powered by a 962 drive train has come out of hiding. This car, built in the late 80′s graced the pages of several enthusiast magazines. Since that time is has kept a very low profile having covered less than 2k miles. Like many of the best things from the 80′s (A-Team, Exile on Main Street, Voltron) it has emerged from its slumber and is offered for sale.
Abridged Notes From the Seller’s Post -
“THE FABLED CREATURE DOES EXIST, AND ITS JUST BEEN PULLED OUT OF HIDING. THIS CAR IS THE RESULT OF A “MONEY IS NO OBJECT” APPROACH TO BUILDING A SUPERCAR. IT WAS ALL THE BUZZ IN THE LATE 80′S SUPERCAR WORLD AND THEN SEEMED TO HAVE JUST VANISHED. HERE IT IS! THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME FOR PORSCHE ENTHUSIASTS.
1989 PORSCHE 962 POWERED SPEEDSTER, ONLY 1896 MILES. THIS INCREDIBLE CAR IS THE PRODUCT OF A GREAT PORSCHE TUNER (BRUCE CANEPA) AND AN OWNER WITH A PASSION FOR SPEED. THE MISSION, BUILD A 200+ MPH SUPERCAR OUT OF 1989 PORSCHE 911 SPEEDSTER.
THE ORIGINAL CONCEPT WAS FOR THE CAR TO LOOK STOCK EXCEPT FOR A LARGE DP (DESIGN PLASTIC) REAR SPOILER, BUT THE CONCEPT CHANGED WHEN IT WAS DECIDED THAT THEY WOULD NEED LARGER WHEELS AND TIRES FOR THE CARS POTENTIAL PERFORMANCE ENVELOPE SO THEY ADAPTED SOME OF THE 934 DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS TO THE SPEEDSTER. IT WAS DECIDED TO USE 934 FENDER FLARES AND A 934 FRONT SPOILER. A DP REAR WING WAS USED BECAUSE SOMETHING LARGER THAN THE 934 WING WAS NEEDED TO FIT THE HUGE INTERCOOLERS OF THE 962 ENGINE THAT WOULD POWER THE CAR.
THEY CHOSE TO USE AN IMSA VERSION OF THE 962 ENGINE. UNLIKE THE THE WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP 956 AND 962 ENGINES WHICH HAD WATER COOLED HEADS AND THEN TOWARDS THE END WERE COMPLETELY WATER COOLED THE IMSA VERSION WAS AN AIR COOLED EVOLUTION OF THE 935 ENGINE. CANEPA WANTED TO USE THE IMSA 962 ENGINE WITH THE FLAT FAN TO BRING BETTER COOLING OF THE RACING FLAT FAN TO AN AIR COOLED ENGINE IN A STREET CAR THAT WOULD BE PRODUCING WELL OVER 500 HORSEPOWER.
581.5 HP @6500 RPM (1.1 BAR BOOST)
PEAK TORQUE OF 550 LB. FT. @ 4000 RPM
TOP SPEED: 210 MPH
ENGINE PERFORMANCE WAS MEASURED WITH ALL ACCESSORIES IN PLACE INCLUDING THE MUFFLER. THE ENGINE WAS ALSO TESTED AT HIGHER BOOST LEVELS WHERE IT PRODUCED IN EXCESS OF 600 HP, BUT THE 1.1 BAR BOOST WAS CHOSEN AS A PRACTICAL BOOST LEVEL FOR A STREET DRIVEN ENGINE.
WELL OVER $300K WAS INVESTED IN THIS MAGNIFICENT PORSCHE (THATS 1989 DOLLARS) CURRENT COST TO BUILD SUCH A CAR WOULD WELL EXCEED $500K. THE ORIGINAL ENGINE WITH LESS THAN 100 MILES IS INCLUDED.”
There is a ton of great information in the ad so I encourage you to hop over and read it in its entirety. In fact, I had no idea that DP was short for Design Plastic, who knew? Anyhow, this is an amazing car even with all the wings, cooling, and spoilers. All necessary evils if you want to go 200 mph on the interstate. I am not condoning those kinds of hi-jinks, I am just saying it would be enough to know that you could.
$230k is a lot for any car but does not seem like too much for a street legal race car considering is cost $300k to build in 1989 dollars. In fact if you wanted to recoup some of the investment you could sell the new original motor for a pretty penny. This is not some hashed out conversion, this car was built by the best to be the best and is in as new condition. While it is not my cup of tea it is an amazing vehicle to behold.
