2005 Audi A8L W12 quattro

About a year ago, I took a look at the top of the heap for Audis in the early 2000s – the A8 W12.

2005 Volkswagen Phaeton W12

With a sticker price of roughly $120,000, they were about five times more expensive than an A4 1.8T quattro. For that, you got more room, more luxury, and more power – 450 horsepower, to be exact. Standard luxuries were also impressive; Audi’s MMI system, 16-way power front seats trimmed in Valcona leather upholstery and equipped with massage elements and ventilation, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, Bose surround sound, polished wood trim, powered rear side window shades, heated front and rear seats…essentially, this was a Swiss ski resort that could move pretty quickly – to the Swiss ski resort. Today’s car also had some pricey options; the $2k adaptive cruise control system, 20″ wheels, a solar sunroof, and a special interior and full leather upgrade.

Last year’s example came to market with 60k miles and a $68k asking price – pretty hard to justify in my mind. Today’s car? Well, let’s say it’s been well used, but it still looks good. What does the high-mileage discount equate to?

1995 Audi RS2 Avant

Why would anyone even contemplate paying over $70,000 for a 27-year-old, complicated, and turbocharged Audi wagon? Because of the badge that adorns the front – the magical ‘Renn’ added to the S2 badge, along with the legendary name Porsche scripted below. That meant that this relatively unassuming Audi 80 quattro Avant had been produced in Zuffenhausen on the 959 production line rather than Ingolstadt or Neckarsulm and had added a healthy dose of even more “Sport” to the small chassis. Ostensibly, though the Sport Quattro was the first RS vehicle, the RS2 was the first to wear the badge which has become synonymous with Audi’s speed department. For many Audi aficionados, though the RS vehicles have become much faster and more luxurious, just as the with W124 500E and the E30 M3 Audi has never made a car better in its overall execution than the original. Not that it was slow by any means; Porsche’s massaging of the ADU inline-5 resulted in 311 horsepower – even more than the Sport Quattro had from essentially a very similar motor.

So despite being much heavier than the Sport had been, the RS2 wasn’t much slower; sub-5 seconds to 60 and a top speed north of 160 mph. Along the way, it was capable of bullying everything outside of a supercar; yet this car also established the move from Audi’s 2-door halo vehicle to a long line of fast five doors. Porsche also upgraded the brakes and wheels with Brembo units and 17″ Cup wheels creating a signature look, and tacked on 911 mirrors for good measure. This car was legendary from the start, and the upgrades to the motors and wheels spawned an entire generation of enthusiasts to turn up their inline-5s stateside. Now that these cars are legal for importation, though, it’s possible to find the forbidden fruit already imported:

2000 Mercedes-Benz E320

I’ve been harping about the W210 Mercedes-Benz E320 wagon the past few weeks and all, but don’t forget the sedan was the real mover when it came to this generation E-Class. It was a stark departure from the W124 and it’s “old school” Mercedes feel and blocky design. But by the facelift models starting in the 2000 model year, they started to really come into their stride. That was of course if it didn’t rust away, which was a major problem. Today, we have a seemingly innocent looking E320, which is why I quickly dismissed it. However, I saw it pop up again and figure something had to be up for it to be priced at $12,000 for having 110,000 miles. Then I saw inside.

2000 Mercedes-Benz E320

The jump from the W124 Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the next generation W210 was a large one. Gone was the slab sided bodies and square headlines and in was a much more soft design with quad round headlights. Inside, the W210 still behaved like a Mercedes from years past, but they made sure to carry over that roundness and a whole bunch of more plastic. Under the hood, a traditional V6 took the place of the trusty inline-six midway through the model run of the E320, and a workhorse it was. Today example, a 2000 E320 up for sale in Florida, is a great example of that. Why? Well, it has almost 300,000 miles on the odometer.

2009 Audi A8L W12 quattro

I’ve looked at a few W12s previously, but they’ve all been the Volkswagen variant – the ill-fated Phaeton, which still amazes me:

2005 Volkswagen Phaeton W12

Well, Audi also had a run of W12s. This started with the D2 chassis in the early 2000s, but also continued on in what we see here – the D3. Luxury and power were pretty impressive; granted, it was not S65 AMG powerful, but the 6.0L W12 still chucked out 450 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. The D3 was also some 600lbs lighter than the Phaeton, so though it was a tad bigger it was also quicker by a fair margin. You got all the normal luxuries of the long-wheelbase A8 as well, and they bathed the interior in a sea of leather and electronic gizmos. Adaptive air suspension, 19″ wheels, adaptive cruise control, massaging, heated, and ventilated seats; it all added up to one slick – and expensive – package, as the W12 had a $120,000 base price. Not many were sold, so let’s take a look at this one for sale up in Canada:
