Four-door….or four-door coupe? BMW 550i vs. M6 Gran Coupe

For years, the BMW 5 Series has served as a textbook example of a sports saloon. While BMW kept perfecting this genre of automobile, Mercedes-Benz spotted an opportunity in the market, developing a whole new vehicle sector: the four-door coupe. The phrase seems an oxymoron but what you are really getting is a four-door vehicle with a much more swept back roofline and four-place seating in most cases. Even Volkswagen muscled their way into this segment with their Passat CC.

Today we’ll take a look at two recent BMW offerings, both with V8 engines mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox: the 550i and the M6 Gran Coupe. We’ll start with this 2012 550i for sale in North Carolina.

1969 BMW 2000C

1969 BMW 2000C

One of my most favorite BMWs of all time was the E9 Coupe. This was such a delicate looking coupe, with its pillarless profile and shark nose front-end that would become a hallmark of BMW styling over the years to follow. The E9 evolved from the car you see here, the “New Class” 2000C and 2000CS. The difference between the two models was that the 2000C had a single carbureted engine, whereas the CS had twin carbs. Unlike Mercedes-Benzes of the same vintage, you just don’t see a lot of these larger BMWs from the 1960s knocking about. This 2000C Automatic is on offer in Hershey, Pennsylvania, one of just 238 produced for the 1969 model year.

2007 BMW Z4 3.0si Coupe

As BMW started exploring new vehicle segments such as the SAV, or Sport Activity Vehicle, almost 20 years ago, a new model appeared that didn’t get much attention when it first arrived. The Z3 and M Coupe. This oddly proportioned coupe had a breadvan profile that didn’t sit well with all enthusiasts. But years down the road, these cars have become quite collectable. The follow up to the Z3 Coupe was the Z4 coupe, also available in Motorsports form. These Z4 Coupes haven’t taken off in value as much as some of the late model Z3 based M Coupes, but they have the chops to be a future collectable. This Z4 3.0si Coupe for sale in Georgia isn’t the M model, but with a 6-speed manual, you won’t be missing out on too much performance.

1967 Mercedes-Benz 230

Even when you consider their historical involvement in motorsports, there are some Mercedes-Benz vehicles which, on the surface, seem ill-suited to racing. Such is the case with this rally prepared 1967 230 for sale in California. The Mercedes tradition in my family began with a 1962 190C, so I have a soft spot for these W110s. The late 1960s would spell the end for the Heckflosse, or Fintail, but today, they are one of the most accessible Mercedes-Benz classics to be had.
